《Flame-Eyed Immortal》Chapter 72: If Not I, Who Else Will?

Kovinth was currently enjoying himself while cooking a meal in his cave. The cave he had been living in for the past 17 years. It was the time of of Owen’s birth that Kovinth arrived shortly after. It was a certain calling that attracted Kovinth’s attention, it was a scene that reminded him of his own past. He had watched Owen lose the colour in his eyes as Owen’s mother stood pierced his eyes with needles. Such a thing was done to a baby no more than a few months old. And at the final moments, Kovinth could never forget the words she spoke as the blood spilled in the form of tears.
“You! You, vile spawn, took everything away from me! If if wasn’t for you… if you didn’t exist I would be a queen!”
The words were deeply etched into Kovinth’s very being. As he watched from afar, the calling he heard deep within his soul became that much stronger. Only when Kovinth arrived did the calling calm down and from there on he watched Owen until the time of the planet’s Rebirth. He would never interfere with Owen’s life, whether he died, whether he was lied to for his entire life. He would not interfere until the time was right, but after finally meeting Owen and enjoying his short but wonderful memories of becoming his master, the black scaled dragon was no longer as ferocious as the Dark Sea once knew him as. Instead he was just a burly man who loved his disciple very much.
“Kovinth!”
Osena called out to Kovinth who was currently in a daze. When he finally had heard her calling he shook his head and curiously looked towards Osena wondering as to why she was currently in his home. When Osena saw the look on Kovinth’s face she rolled her eyes and answered the question he was asking with his eyes.
“I’m here to eat your food, so hurry up already. Aren’t you my husband?”
“Who is your husband?!”
Is what Kovinth wanted to retort but he had long given up as Osena clearly took the victory with this topic. Whether it was true marriage or not, he didn’t care one way or another. He was too busy thinking about his disciple to care about other things. But for some reason he had a bad feeling and maybe this bad feeling was what caused him to remember the moment Kovinth saw Owen’s mother take his eyes. As Kovinth clearly knew the truth, he also had seen the condition of Owen’s scared eyes. The reason the Solar Eyes technique was so painful for Owen was mainly because all the scarred tissue had to be burnt off before Kovinth could restore them.

But these were things that Kovinth had never told Owen. And even now Kovinth had no intentions on telling him. Yet at the same time it caused him to feel pain deep within his heart.
‘Why do I have such a bad feeling…’
He kept thinking to himself as he once again ignored the ramblings of Osena in the background. But suddenly Kovinth felt another feeling. One all too familiar, to him. And just as he felt this feeling, he saw it from the entrance of his cave. A giant bright pillar of solar light rise into the sky meeting up with the intense star in the sky. He fumbled over his words as he tried to understand what was going on. Although he was confused he immediately knew what he had to do.
“Owen!”
But immediately after saying this, Osena also sat up and stood in front of Kovinth blocking his way. She gave a deep meaningful look with no words to follow. A tinge of anger appeared within his glare. He could only speak calmly and slowly to get his words across to Osena.
“Move. I know what you’re going to say. But I don’t care. Move Osena.”
Osena’s hair swayed in the air as the calm words had so much force behind then it caused a sudden breeze of wind to pass her. But even still she remained motionless while responding to him.
“You can not go. I know exactly what it means for that light to appear. After all how could I not? I’ve seen it all too many times from you. If Owen is using his eyes now, it must be something that may cause his death, or hurt him just as much. I can’t see either of those being possible just after the first wall. But it’s clear something happened!”
Her voice started to tremble as she also started to shiver. Though she didn’t budge and inch and lifted up her arms showing her resolve to stop Kovinth as she spoke once more.
“I like him too! But I will not allow you to break the laws for him! I like him, but I love you! If you break the law now. They will find you!”
Kovinth looked at the pillar of light in the sky and then back to Osena. His anger was completely hidden but he that it was obvious to Osena that he was angry. Even while knowing that, she still stood in front of him.

“I don’t know what will happen if I break the laws. I don’t know who will come after me. But I do know that if I don’t save my disciple. I will experience a pain like that day so many years ago. Osena! Move! I refuse to let that happen to me ever again!”
Kovinth rose his voice with each passing word. Each word caused Osena to shiver just a bit more. With all her strength she continued to argue with Kovinth.
“You think I don’t know that? I was there! I watched as we lost the place we loved the most! I watched as your own star was destroyed! Do you think I wish for you to experience that pain again?!”
Tears started to form in Osena’s eyes, but she couldn’t stop herself from speaking. The words came out all by themself.
“Do you seriously mean to live as Sundra again? You who lives without Sol?!”
Kovinth tried his best to relax himself. He dropped his arms and slowly walked towards Osena. When he arrived in front of her, just a single step away, enough to see the clear tears reflect his own self within them. He carefully wiped her tears and embraced her. Surprised by the sudden grab, Osena gave out a little squeal and fumbling over words that made no sense, she was silenced by Kovinth’s voice.
“Luna…. We can not stay in the past. Terra was the reason for our existence and it’s gone. I fought for that and lost. But now, I have another reason to fight. One that I will make sure to protect with my every being. That boy will die if I don’t help him. I refuse to allow that to happen. After all, I am his master, if not I, who else will save him?”
Osena shook her head as she was filled with sadness. She slammed her tiny weak fists into Kovinth’s chest as he held onto her. She tried to use all her strength but all that came out was a pathetic attempt to ease her own pain. Her eyes turned red as she wanted everything to work out, but instead everything was falling apart.
“Why! Why can’t you just be happy with me… Why do you have to go through all this suffering again? Tell me!”
Kovinth gave a small smirk towards Osena and softly spoke as his eyes started to change into a raging flame.
“Osena, if I live through this. Let’s get married for real…. Okay?”
“Wha….? Wh...y…”
Shocked from the sudden proposal, Kovinth struck her in the stomach which knocked the wind out of her. The only air left in her lungs was just enough to squeeze out the painful cries of why. She had wanted to say so much more. She wanted to stop him that much harder. But she was unable to. As her eyes became heavy she knew that she may never her loved one again and then she lost consciousness. The next moment Kovinth disappeared into nothing towards the pillar in the sky. Towards his one and only disciple.
----------------------------
“So…..it has finally begun? Well, after all the time and effort I put into this… it is of little surprise...”
A rough voice was heard whistling in the darkness like a passing breeze. And like a breeze it soon disappeared as if it never happened to begin with.

Dragon: Birth of an Ancient
Deep in a secluded forest, within the depths of a long forgotten cave, an unnatural silence that has reigned for little over a million years is shattered as a hatchling takes its first breath. To the various species that called this world, one of seven, home, the matter seemed beyond insignificant. The hatchling, like all monsters, had no divine backing and with its age, could only be considered a lesser existence. A being to be used by the Chosen and noble monster bloodlines in their never-ending pursuit of power, fame and immortality. However, how could any of the short-lived races, Chosen and Monster alike, know that the tiny, weak, lizard-like creature was much more than it seemed. That it was an entity only spoken of in myth and legend. From a species that their ancestors, with the backing of the Gods, paid a huge price to remove. A heretical existence that threatened the fragile peace that had descended upon their world. A Dragon. ==== ** Cover done by the amazing Felix!*** I am writing this story for a friend who is currently in hospital and in a very precarious situation. He gave me the plot/ concept and, after my own health issues, I wanted to try and brighten his day and provide a distraction from the monotony of their hospital stay. I am posting it on RRL mainly in case anyone else can find enjoyment from the story and to show the readers of my other stories that I am not permanently MIA (and will 100% return to those stories in the future).

The General Core {The Sphere}
The life cycle in the Sphere is on the brink of collapse because one of its elements, the Dungeons, have been exploited too much by the mortals. The group who created the Sphere already tried and failed with several modifications, because the original computer-like dungeon cores are too inflexible to handle changing approaches. So they try another type of solution – taking souls from other worlds to try to find a solution before the Sphere Cycle breaks down completely. The General was one of the best soldiers of his world, rising from the ranks of a private through Officer School to the highest command with honors. But when his world faced a zombie apocalypse, even that was not enough and he had to make the ultimate sacrifice. Now he is asked for a repeat performance of planning and controlling a dungeon and its spawns in a world that he knows nothing about… But what is the Sphere really? What is that [Xenotic conversion] he has to go through to even enter the Sphere? Something is really strange and he will have to find out what is going on to get to his promised rewards – whatever they will be. Being a soul in a dungeon core means that the General has better chances of finding hints to the truth about the sphere – a knowledge that would help him survive. And no, the sphere is NOT a virtual reality – the key to its secrets is the place where it was physically constructed (Author’s hint). This is a dungeon core story - but there are quite a number of things that I will do differently than common to those stories. 1) I will describe the floors when they are explored, NOT when they are build. Yes, that will mean it will take longer to get to those parts - but I think describing floors both when they are build and when they are explored destroys quite a lot of chances for suspense when adventurers enter the dungeon. After all, if you as the reader already know where the traps are, then you can't really be surprised when the surfacers encounter them. 2) How the world works (and how not) is an integral part of the story, so it will be explained I'm a world-builder first and the Sphere is NOT a regular world (as hinted in the synopsis above). Things will work differently than in your 08/15 default dungeon core stories - as the General and Gunny have already learned in the second arc (and more of that is already scheduled for the next weeks (July/Aug 2019) when the Sky Arrows continue to explore and evaluate that strange dungeon) If you don't like these premises, then I'm sure you'll find a lot of other Dungeon Core stories more to your liking. But if you are interested in more than "Dungeon builds another room and corridor in medieval earth" and are not afraid of a longer and slower story, then go on. I have two more stories in the Sphere, although they both have lower priority than this one: Shaleen the Wanderer (Adventurer, NSFW) (currently on hold after some chapters) Info's on the Sphere (System Docu and Short Stories) (irregular updates when needed) Current Status reports have been moved to a new discord server: https://discord.gg/EaHkXCfm9y
