《The Last King》chapter twenty-six

It had been quite some time now that Morrigan had been away from the school and she couldnt wait to head back.
She couldnt help but release a small sigh.
Collecting souls was such a tiresome job.
Other than being mind-numbingly boring, the souls also constantly chatted amongst themeselves.
It was hardly what you would expect from souls.
At the start there were always the same reactions. Shock, disbelief, anger, despair, acceptance. Most of the time the reactions happened in that order. Though she likes to mess with them at the early stages they somehow always managed to overcome the reality of their deaths and surprisingly managed to make idle conversation that was, in all honesty, quite annoying.
Or maybe they didnt overcome it. Maybe they tried to escape it by pretending everything was well.
Whatever the case, the small orb-like souls soon bounced back and became talkative to the point where Morrigan wanted to pull out her ears. Not that it would have done anything. The souls didnt communicate through conventional means and transmitted their words directly to the minds of those around them.
She couldnt turn that off either. She had to suffer through it.
She hated her job. It didnt even come with any benefits.
And all that was only on good days.
Days like these were dfferent.
It was different because right now she stood high over a large battlefield, looking down at the carnage below from the sky.
This was the type of scenes she saw more often. She was heavily affiliated with battlefields. Taking care of souls who died of other causes was a side-job. In reality she was mainly responsible for deaths regarding wars, famine and other things that caused large-scale casualties.
She hated that fact because it meant she always had to deal with the stink of blood, sweat, piles of rotting corpses and all the other little disgusting details that happened when large amounts of dead bodies were found.
Also the souls of the fallen warriors were even more annoying than others, constantly spouting curses at the enemy soldiers' souls and generally pissing her off with their perverted remarks toward her.
Well, she did punish them by burning their souls for a few seconds. But the fact remains that they brought down her mood.
She didnt really care about them. If it was up to her they would all be wandering about aimlessly until they became evil spirits or such. But making sure they entered the afterlife properly was an important duty.
Again, she didnt really care about the mortals but if her husband found out she wasnt doing her job properly then he would likely scold her if he knew she was being negligent in her duties. Well, that was only if he was here, which he wasnt. Still, she didnt like doing things that would make him disappointed in her if she would help it.
Of course she couldnt do all this alone. She did have help, the countless little crows who she sent to collect souls.
She was more of a supervisor. She herself didnt have the time to collect all the souls but she did have to make sure they got to the afterlife safely.
Morrigan had just gotten done sending the last batch of souls away via a large portal when she heard a flutter of fabric arrive beside her.

"Mommy, are you done yet? I want to go home. It smells here and I want to go back and play with sister Fenris." A young, childish voice called out to her. It was a soft, adorble voice that was pleasant to listen to.
Morrigan smiled warmly at the young girl who appeared beside her, her beautiful face suddenly seeming a lot kinder and happy than others would have thought possible of the woman.
The young girl, like Morrigan, wore a simple black dress that contrasted well with their snow-white hair and fair skin.
The girl's small, delicate face and luminous azure eyes alone was enough to capture the heart of anyone.
" I've just gotten done." Morrigan told her. " We can start heading back now, little one. You know, you've grown quite attached to that Fenris girl lately haven't you?"
The little girl nodded enthusiastically. " Nn, sister Fenris is always so nice to me and always gives me treats. She also plays with me whenever I want and lets me ride on her back, too! She's the best!" The little girl said, her eyes glowing with excitement. Her adorable face lit up and she smiled happily when talking about "sister Fenris".
Morrigan looked hurt. " Better than mommy?" She asked
The little girl shook her head quickly. " No! Mommy is way better! Mommy is the very best! Sister Fenris is the best sister, but mommy is the best mommy ever! " She declared.
Morrigan grinned. " Little sweet talker. Mommy loves my little Grace, you know? You're the best daughter anyone could have. Now, lets head back, okay? Mommy wants to get back too." Morrigan patted her daughter on the head. The past few days have been tiring.
Come to think of it, weren't there a few Immortals chasing some humans a day or two ago? Morrigan was curious about what caused that sort of developement but she couldnt investigate as she was preoccupied here.
Hopefully Loki listened to her and went to collect the souls of those four. The story would be an interesting one to be sure.
Morrigan snapped her fingers.
After several seconds a streak of light flashed and a large boat could be seen sailing through the skies. An instant later the boat arrived in from of the two.
Obviously Morrigan and her daughter wouldnt be flying all the way back. It would take a few days to get back and only an idiot would choose to fly all that way instead of using some type of transportation.
The two entered the boat, eating the fruits laid out on the table that rested by their seats.
"Mommy, did you mean what you said?" Grace suddenly asked.
Morrigan immediately knew to what her daughter was reffering. " Of course. You're the best daughter anyone could ask for and mommy loves you. Anyone would be lucky to have you as their daughter." Morrigan smiled at the young girl.
The girl smiled a bit. However her face looked a bit troubled by something.

After some time had passed, the sky suddenly darkened and became grey. There was a sudden chill in the air that had nothing to do with the temperature.
Bang!!
The flying boat swayed as if it bumped into something.

They heard a few of the windows to the rooms below deck crack and bursts of violent winds made the Morrigan and the little girls air flutter wildly.
Accompanied by the sound of wind there were countless red sparks of lightning spread throughout the sky, scattering in all directions
In the clouds that they rid upon, one could see a serpentine figure moving about. It was quite large, at least a few miles long.
"Oh? Could this be the territory of some Demon beast? How odd, i thought only magical beasts would be out at this time of year." Morrigan spoke to no one in particular, sounding completely calm and unruffled at the sudden display.
Demon beasts, those territorial fellows were unlike magical beasts who simply minded their own business.
The little girl looked interestedly at the serpent-like demon beast that surrounded them, her azure colored eyes flashing with excitement as if she had just discovered a new toy to play with.
A loud roar echoed throughtout the sky, the clouds parting at the sheer force.
An instant later the demon beast revealed its face, its eyes glowing red with malice.
The beast was indeed quite large. it wasnt simply long, but its body was massive to the extent that it could possible coil around a mountain and crush it. It was a winged creature that probably dominated the skies in the area.
Morrigan wondered why they didnt notice it until now. Something that size was hard to miss.
The beast looked at them with evil intent, demonic energy radiating off of it like a dark miasma.
"Hey, hey, mommy, can I play with that thing for a bit?" The little girl suddenly asked, her voice gushing with eagerness.
Morrigan laughed. " Go ahead dear."
Instantly the girl jumped off the boat. Her little figure flew up at the beast until it arrived in front of his face.
"Hehe~ I get to try out my new move! Yay!" The little girl grinned. " Hey, hey, what's your name?" She asked it.
Morrigan called out to her. " Grace, dear, this is a demon beast, it cant understand you."
The girl looked shocked. " Eh, really?! How disappointing."
She looked at him with a apologetic expression. " Sorry, but im going to kill you now, okay? Ah, but dont worrry, i'll make sure your body isnt picked at by others!"
After saying so, the little girl raised her hand and an ethereal azure light bled up into the sky. She swung the hand down gently and after seveal seconds a line of blue smoke-like energy appeared suddenly and divided the sky in two for an instant.
The body of the massive beast was spilt in half and it was slowly turned into ash that scattered in the wind. Not a trace of it was left.
At its death the weather cleared up once again and it was as if nothing had ever occurred.
Thr battle was over before the beast could even begin to attack.
The entire thing was anti-climactic and any onlookers would be disappointed at the spectacle that was far less exciting than what would have been hoped for.
As if nothing had happened, the girl returned to her seat beside her mother. She let out a small yawn.
Morrigan arched a brow at her. " What was that?" She asked
"Hm? Ah, that was a new move I was working on. Hehe~ pretty cool huh?Nn, i worked hard on that one, but the power output isn't as strong as what I expected. One of its good point though is that it makes it so there is no clean-up afterwards, since everything turns to ashes! I cant show it off just yet. Ai, I thought I would be able to use that thing as a practice dummy, i didnt expect that it would be so weak. " She sighed. " I think I would improve it much faster if I had a suitable partner. Maybe sister Fenris can help me."
" I thought it was quite a good attack though." Morrigan assured her, thinking of the power she felt from it. Although it looked simple, in reality there must have been countless operations working in concert to create it.
Indeed, this little girl of hers was a genius when it came to combat and creating new skills like the one from before.
"No, it was no good. Something of that level I cant be proud of. I still cant beat you, mommy. Or sister Fenris. How can I show my face to daddy someday if I remain at only this level of power? He would be so disappointed in me if he finds out how weak I am!" She cried out.
Morrigan felt her smile stiffen slightly. " Honey, we talked about this, havent we? Your father-"
The little girl cut her off and waved her small hand tiredly.
"Yes, yes. But, mommy, even if he isnt here for now he'll surely come back to us eventually. You said daddy is very strong, right? Even stronger than you and sister Fenris! Even if he hasnt seen me since my birth, even if we havent met yet, as his daughter it would be shameful to think I can have the right to see him as I am now! If I get stronger then I can hold my head up high when we are all brought together again!" She smiled brightly
" . . ."
Morrigan said nothing, but the innocent, hopeful words from her daughter caused her to feel a twinge of pain in her heart.
How long had it been since he had to leave them? How long will this little girl have to wait until she can meet him?

Author's notes: If any are confused, i just made this chapter to show what Morrigan and her daughter are doing. Expect another chapter or two of them before we get back to Roland and his side.
Ah, also, remember intermission two? Yeah, the girl is Roland's daughter in case you didnt catch that.
Also, im sorry that i havent made a update in the past few days. I've been busy trying to raise my Economic grade since i have an F in that class and i wont graduate if i dont have a passing grade there. But im nearly done with the work i have to get done and there should be more chapters out within the next few days.
Oh and remember to rate, review and comment!
