《The Last King》chapter one

Roland stared at the magic circle that appeared in front of him.
It was perfectly symetrical in every way and had small glowing runes and symbols lining its edges that continued to move in a strange circular pattern until it reached the center of the circle.
They held a meaning that would have been indecipherable to any regular person. Roland however, instantly recognised the language, the "intent" behind them, and determined the circle's usage at a mere glance.
Up until then he had been lazing under the moonlight in a rather secluded area that only he knew, staring aimlessly at the sky. He did that often these days.
However, the appearance of the sight before him was quite unexpected. A pleasant surprise.
He let out a small smile.
A summoning circle. How interesting , he thought, faintly amused.
He could feel that oppressive aura emanating from the glowing circle before him, crackling with energy and spreading light to its surrounding. He felt the soft, insistent whispering at the back of his mind that urged him forward, to step onto the circle and be transported to some far off place.
There were few who were capable of summoning beings from across the vast multi-verses. The power required was phenomenal. No ordinary mage or other such person could provide the mana and mental strength that could withstand searching through the endless sea of various universes.
Usually very few could resist a summoning of this level once it was successful completed. Roland however was a different matter. If he did not allow it, virtually no being could summon him.
Most people, if they knew what was happening at the time, would be angry about being forcefully taken to a strange world. Roland had known people who had been Summoned before. They were understandably annoyed at the fact.

For his part though, he was only a bit curious. See, a Summoning such as this was very unpredictable.
You never quite knew what you’ll end up with. Although, it could also be said to be quite effective.
When using this particular type of summoning magic, the circle’s power would take on a slight bit of sentience, connection with the mind of the summoner.
It used that connection to narrow down it search to find the person or creature that best suited the summoner’s needs or wants, therefore lessening the strain on the summoner’s mind so that it is not instantly shattered and thrown out across the ether.
Of course even then the summoner using this kind of magic cannot use the spell for very long, hence the need for a strong mind and will. Unless you have enough mana to power it the spell won’t work but even if you had that, without powerful mental strength you may as well give up because one of two things would happen: Either you mind would be shattered, as mentioned before, or, if you’re lucky, the spell would simply fail.
You would lose the ability to perform magic for several years, but at least you’ll live.
Well, only Grand Summonings like this come with such high risks though.
For these, even if you succeed, even if the mind of the summoner is quite powerful, you could not sustain the spell for long as the mana consumption rate is too high and there is no guarantee the time would be sufficient to actually summon anything that met the requirements.
In short, even if the spell succeeds you may end up with nothing and if it failed the repercussions are not really worth the risk. A person would have to be really desperate to use a spell like that.

Of course, Summonings came in different types and levels. This one, a Grand Summoning, was of the highest level.
The other types, for the most part, wouldn't bring much harm at all.
But what surprised Roland was the fact HE was being summoned. Meaning someone, somewhere, needed him. Needed his power.
Though, the power that the summoning circle emitted was nowhere near strong enough to force Roland to go anywhere he did not want to.
That was why the circle was in front of him rather than having appeared underneath his feet as it would have usually done. In most cases the summonee wouldnt have a choice in the matter.
But this time was different. Since it was him, It couldnt bring him any place againt his will.
In a situation like this, it was more like a cry for help rather than a kidnapping.
Roland gave a mental shrug.
Well, it isn’t as if he had anything better to do right now, though that person would probably throw a fit once he was gone. Well, him leaving would have happened eventually anyway.
It was a bit early, but this way was easier, no?
Oh well.
It was geting boring on this planet anyway, he thought.
Having already decided his course of action, Roland stepped onto the circle.
"Now then, let’s have some fun shall we?"
But before even the last word was spoken, he was already gone.
