《Frau NoSur》Chapter 3: Training hall and The mysterious wood
Advertisement
In the middle of an afternoon I was forced to accompany an old lady who helps in the orphanage saying.
“Hey Frau since you don’t socialize with anyone why don’t you accompany me I need to deliver some bread to the soldiers and I need some extra hand”
Grabbing the back of my shirt and drag me with her while smiling. It’s kind of creepy and scary at the same time. Why? Imagine an old lady bout four times your size dragging you along the hallway smiling, but you can feel the grim aura around her and what made me even more scared she can lift a freaking 2 sacks of wheat damn. I don’t want to know what will happen to me if I ever got on her bad side so what can I do *sigh*
It took us about an hour to prepare and it seems the why reason she is in a bad mood is someone got the time of delivery mixed up with another delivery which is on the separate route and it really made the Gorill.. *ehem* I mean the lady snap.
We rode on a wagon and after another hour we arrived at our destination and I felt something familiar.
“Huh? Weird I think I’ve been here before” I muttered. OH! That’s right on my first day here on this city I’m with those soldiers and then I was sent to the orphanage.
Inside were a lot of different weapons neatly aligned on the walls and there are thick wooden poles, you can see a lot of slice and pierced holes in it but the strange part is there are also wood shaped like a sword and some long stick.
“What are those for?” I ask the old lady while pointing out those things.
“Hmm. Oh those are for training this is that training hall after all”
“Training?”
“Yes, hmm how do I put it, it’s something to make you strong”
That made me smile and made my face lit up with excitement.
“If I do this so called training, will I become strong?” I ask the old lady with sparkling eyes.
“ Hahahahaha yes you will but you have to wait if you want to join the militia, you need to be at least fifteen years old to enter and start training”
“Whoa, that’s too long, I’m five right now so I need ten more years” I made a sad face while counting in my hand.
“Yes it is impossible for you right now and most important of all we have something we need to do so move along I don’t want to stay here for too long there are a lot of things we need to do back in the orphanage.”
We now walked to our destination, still disappointed I looked around while following the old lady.
Some of the soldiers are hitting the wooden pole with those sticks and some use swords. I can also see some lifting block of rocks. At the center of the building there are some who are fighting using sticks too.
“If I do the same thing will that make me strong too?” I ask myself while thinking of how he can do it.

We finished our delivery and head back to the orphanage and on our way back I kept thinking of a way how can I do some training.
There are a lot of rules on the orphanage and I’m so sure they won’t allow me to do some training. I’m always alone so I know no one will notice if I train for a bit without being seen. I have a lot of free time but the main problem is the place and where can I get those sticks.
“Stone are not really a problem I can always go to the nearby forest to find something useful.” I muttered to my self
“Hmm forest, lots of wood, sticks are made from wood”
*ting*
“THAT’S IT IM A GENIUS MHAHAHAHAHA” I suddenly stand up *thud* and fell on my face flat on the wooden floor of the wagon.
.
.
.
.
The next day I sneak out of the orphanage and look for a good branch and some nicely shaped stones. Looking for some stones are easy enough, The nicely shape ones are near the river so I skipped it and look for the other thing I need but finding a good branch of wood is the toughest part. There are a lot of fallen branches but if it not bent it’s too weak and easily breaks.
The sun started to set and turn dark, I almost gave up but on my way back I found some log about three times the size of my fist and twice the length as my height. I’m really satisfied while dragging it back to the orphanage.
When I arrived at the orphanage I go straight to the back but when I arrived a man greeted me.
“It’s already time for you to take a bath and prepare your bed before eating dinner what are you still doing here?”
“I ah um I um”. DAMN just my luck got caught red handed what should I do?
“Wait what’s with that piece of wood? Something you need?”
“I um I want a um s- sword so I um I can’t buy one and um decided to make one” DAMN I’m dead did I just fell on a trap in front of me.
“Gahahahahah nice nice a man is not a man without a sword, but I don’t think you can turn that into a sword, why don’t you give that piece of wood to me and ill create a sword from it.”
“Tha- thank you” I gave him the piece of wood but I still feel awkward.
The man is a wood worker and responsible in the repairs of beds, chairs, and tables here in the orphanage. My first impression on him is a scary and grumpy man. He hates children and always scares us whenever he visits.
The man took the wood and inspect it, he frown and give me a curious look.
“Hey kid where did you find this?”
“In-inside the forest ne-near here is there something w-wrong”
“Nothing is wrong it’s just” he paused for a moment and “I’ll be honest with you kid, this here is a very rare wood, I’ve only seen this kind of wood twice and this will be the third time. It’s a type of wood that depending on the temperature if heated, it will become as hard as or harder than steel. You’re lucky kid I’m the one who found you if it’s not those bastards would steal it from you and sold this at a good price”

I don’t know what to say I mean it’s just something I found in the forest waiting to rot if I dint find it.
“Is it really that rare?” I ask
“Well not really rare but the place where you normally see one of these is located in the cursed forest, they call it forest of lost souls, which has a rumor that once you go in you will never find your way back. I don’t know how did I get here but you’re more than lucky to find these”
I see but from what happened to me in the past I don’t really consider myself that lucky and finding something like this is a mere coincidence.
“You can have some all I need is a sword”
“Are you sure kid? With the size of this thing you can make more than a sword”
“Yes” I answered with a straight face
He move closer and look stare at me for a while.
*grin* “I like you kid, even though you knew how valuable this piece of wood is you did not became greedy and only wanted what you need. Alright I’ve decided I’m going to make the best sword in the world. With the greatest design, balance, sharpness and I’ll make it so you can still use it even if you’re an adult. I’m not a blacksmith but I’m the best wood worker in the whole country. I don’t have any use to the left over wood so I’ll just make a pair of daggers”
“Thank you very much”
“No need to thank me kid. Oh I almost forgot you’re still underage” he scratches his cheek and began to think of something
NOOOOOOOOO I forgot about that, one of the rules of the orphanage no weapons allowed, even the soldiers who visits never bring any kind of weapon and worse even if its a wooden sword I’m still a five year old kid.
“Well let’s put it this way. I’ll crate a seal on the sword and the daggers with some cloth and rope then promise me not to unseal it until your fifteen. I'll also talk to the management of the orphanage so you can keep it, of course it’s a secret that it’s a going to be a real weapon. But if you break your promise ill confiscate it and return it to you until your fifteen. Do we get ourselves a deal?”
“But what am I going to use? I want to train with the sword so I want to become strong”
“Now I see what your real intentions are. It’s dangerous to train with that fragile body of yours but familiarizing yourself with the sword at an early age is a good thing. I’m a busy man so I don’t have the time to train you but *sigh*. Ok I’ll give you a normal training sword suited for you to use but you’re on your own after that”
I smiled “The weapons plus a training sword. DEAL”
“Ok kid now I will finish everything as fast as I could. I also want this to be a masterpiece so it might take longer. By tomorrow I’ll give you the training sword but the weapon might take a week or longer than that, it will depend on how fast I can get the tools I need to heat this thing to perfection”
“Thank you very much and I’ll be going now, the adults will get angry with me soon”
“yeah do that so bye kid I’ll see you tomorrow”
“Bye good sir”
With that I rushed inside the orphanage, took a bath, prepare the bed and manage to be on time for dinner.
Things happened a little bit different but I guess it starts well and ends well.
~~~~Wood Worker’s POV~~~~
After the conversation with the kid I go back to my house and start preparing to create the weapons as promised in my shop. Working on this type of wood is difficult and one mistake will turn the wood into ashes. The heating process is composed of several steps; you need to slowly increase the temperature around the wood little by little until the temperature is high enough to melt the hardest ore in the world and stronger than a dragons flame breath to achieved perfection.
“My master once told me some years ago, that a weapon created from this wood can even pierce the hard scales of a dragon without leaving any scratch on it”
Removing the bark of the wood slowly and carefully then when I’m done I will start to carve out the form of the sword plus the daggers and do the week long heating process.
“That kid is really lucky, Master once said that sometimes things like that happen for those who will have a great deal of destiny ahead of them and if ever I met one and asked to work on it I must put my all and create the best weapon I can create. Never ask for the payment and must not have any ill intensions while heating it or everything will fail.”
Done with the carving and shaping the sword which I placed some great details and design. I started the heating process and left it on a safe place.
“Now, time to create the training sword for the brat. I still need some materials for the heating process but that can wait for tomorrow”
And so the creation of Frau’s most trusted partner’s Begin.
An Unwavering Craftsman
Given the hereditary nature of classes, everyone expects Damien—the child of two high-tiered adventurers—to be granted a high-tier combat class of his own. Expectations are betrayed, however, when Damien finds himself instead saddled with a crafting class of the lowest possible tier: [Neophyte Tailor]. Left practically crippled compared to those with better classes, Damien wants to avoid becoming a pawn in the machinations of the nobility, desiring only to grind his level in peace while wondering why the usual rules of inheritance were broken. Was it his desire to excel by his own effort, rather than an unearned blessing from a god? Did the Five take offence at his opinions on the unfairness of hereditary classes? Or maybe it was something to do with the alien voice that intruded on his ceremony? A voice that offers great power, and freedom from the tyranny of the Five, but that never names its price. This story is litRPG-lite. While the class someone possesses controls most of their lives, people don't get dinged at for every level they gain, nor can they see their status without undergoing a special ritual. The MC has no romantic interest. Crafting is merely a way to game the system, and doesn't feature heavily in the story, aside from a few descriptions on how they're carrying out the system abuse. There is, on one unfortunate occasion, maths. The pace is quick. This was a participant in the Spring 2022 writathon. (i.e. it was posted as-written at high speed. I may give it another editing pass in the future.)
