《Eulalia's Adventure》Chapter 14: Nikolai and Aine 1

Three days have passed ever since I found the little girl and the boy.
Since then, I’ve been treating their wounds and cleaning their bodies.
Well, it was only for the little girl though.
It’s because Keith strongly disapprove me when I tried to clean the boy’s body.
When I asked him why, his face would quickly become red and would run away from as quickly as possible.
Also, during those three days, I slept in the living room while Keith slept near the door of our former room.
He said that he was their guard in case something happens.
Or if the boy suddenly goes wild when he wakes up in an unfamiliar environment, he’ll be close by and would be able to pacify him quickly.
This morning, when I opened the door, I saw the boy and the girl hugging each other.
As a result, I stood frozen with my left hand holding the doorknob and my right hand holding the little girl’s clothes.
“Ummm….”
Noticing me, the little girl separated from the boy and started opening her mouth.
As a result, I woke up from my daze and slowly closed the door.
“Sorry to disturb you.”
“Huh?”
Tiptoeing, I slowly walked away from the door.
“Wait a minute!”
The boy suddenly shouted and called for me.
It seemed like they became really embarrassed and was unable to continue, so I returned to their room.
Because of what I saw, I was unable to look at them in the eye.
So I stood beside the door and stared at the window.
An awkward silence permeated in the room.
After a while boy couldn’t take the silence anymore, so he started talking to me.
“… first things first, who are you?”
“Before you ask for another person’s name, you must first introduce yourself.”
Since he’s not in his own home, his status doesn’t have any effect here.
Though I’m still not used to speaking to strangers, because of Keichi’s experiences, thanks to Mary’s memories, I’m somewhat able to talk to them.
The boy and the girl’s expression became shocked.
At first, I wondered why they became like that, but after a little thinking, their reactions were somewhat normal.
It’s because they’re not used to being treated like this by a commoner.

After a while, the boy’s expression became resigned and he started to introduce himself.
“... What you just said is true… I’m sorry, let me introduce myself first.”
“My name is Nikolai…. Just Nikolai, the one over there is my younger sister Aine. She’s 3 years younger than me who am 15 years old.”
Without meeting their eyes, I also introduced myself to them.
“I’m Eulalia and this place is called Augre Village. Don’t ask me what the date is though, I’m uneducated in that department.”
I told them things that they may ask in advance so that they wouldn’t ask me stupid questions.
Also, in my self-made calendar, today is Feb 28 year 3.
The first year of my calendar is the year when I first gained Keichi’s memories.
“Augre Village? Since when have I been here?”
“About three days ago.”
“… three days?”
Nikolai started muttering something under his breath.
I tilted my head to the side and turned towards Aine.
Because there was only one bed, the two of them have slept on top of it together.
As a result, Aine was currently hugging Nikolai’s arm while trembling.
“I’ll leave these clothes over here for now. I’ll go downstairs and deliver breakfast to you two.”
“You have my gratitude.”
Nikolai thanked me before I walked out of the room.
Receiving his thanks, I gave him a small smile.
When I arrived at the kitchen, I saw Keith carrying two bundles of wood.
I then called him and told him that the two of them were now awake.
“Since when?”
“I don’t know. When I went upstairs to change Aine’s clothes, they were already awake.”
“Aine?”
Keith crossed his arms when he heard me utter an unknown name.
“Ah, Aine’s is the little girl who I found along with the boy. Also, the boy’s name is Nikolai.”
“What’s their surnames?”
“I don’t know. Even though you could tell that they nobles and should have possessed surnames, they purposely omitted it.”
“Hmmm….”
“Because I thought that it’d be rude, I didn’t force them to tell me what they were.”
He nodded and said:
“Well, for now, I’ll help you carry the food upstairs once you’re done cooking.”

“What about the firewood?”
“This is the last bundle for today.”
“Is that so? Then I’ll have you help me then.”
Since they were sick, I prepared two bowls of chicken soup and had Keith carry them.
When I opened the door, I saw a replay of the scene that happened earlier.
Keith’s face quickly became red and backed away, while I gave them a deep bow and slowly closed the door.
And just like this earlier, Nikolai shouted wait and had us come in.
“Cough* from your eyes, I’m pretty sure that you’re misunderstanding something. What I did just now with my younger sister isn’t what you think it is. I was only comforting her because she was crying. So please stop looking away.”
Because he was pleading, I slowly turned my head to him.
Keith also did the same and just like me, he was unable to hide his blush.
I then looked towards Aine and found out that her eyes were still a bit red.
“I understand, I’ll believe you… for now.”
“… for now?”
“Nevermind that. Here’s your breakfast. Hope you enjoy it.”
Keith placed the two bowls in front of them.
When Nikolai saw the chicken soup, he raised one of his eyebrows and asked me.
“What’s this?”
“It’s chicken soup. “
“Chicken… soup? What’s soup.”
“It’s that.”
“… this?”
“Yes.”
Nikolai continuously asked me what chicken soup was while stirring it with a spoon.
Since I felt that some of his questions were retarded, I answered his questions curtly.
“Quit asking questions and start eating!”
Keith who couldn’t take it anymore shouted at him.
As a result of his scream, Aine trembled slightly and tightened her hug on Nikolai’s arm.
Nikolai then took a spoonful of soup from the bowl and observed it.
“In case you’re suspicious, I could taste it for you.”
Because he looked like he was checking if it was poisoned, I took the initiative and gave him a suggestion.
“… It’s okay because you were the ones who took care of us, I’ll eat it.”
He sipped on the chicken soup and had it slush around his mouth.
When he swallowed the soup, his eyes started glowing and fed Aine a spoonful of it.
Like her older brother, her eyes started glowing and the two of them started eating the chicken soup with gusto.
“Thanks for the meal.”
“No, problem.”
Nikolai thanked me for the meal while Aine nodded her head slightly to me.
“That food was really delicious. Who was the one who cooked it.”
“Eulalia of course.”
Keith puffed out his chest and declared it with a very proud face.
This action made me giggle a bit, but because he didn’t mean any harm, I didn’t stop him.
“Really? Even though you’re around Aine’s age, you’re quite a good cook. It tastes better than the castle’s.”
“Which castle?”
“Oh, the one that’s located in the….”
Nikolai suddenly stopped before he completed his sentence.
He then glared at me and said:
“I’ve traveled to lots of castles and this food is by far the best one I’ve tasted. How come you’re not working in one?”
Because the question he asked hit a very sensitive mark, Keith and I stood frozen.
Aine stared at us with curiosity as she waited for our answer while Nikolai narrowed his eyes.
“W-Well, we were incompetent servants, so we got fired.”
I tried my best to answer him without telling him the exact details.
Nikolai somewhat understood that we didn’t want him to ask us about those things and didn’t pursue the topic.
As a result, a really heavy atmosphere covered the room.
The only thing that didn’t feel it was Aine, her eyes continued to blink rapidly with a mystified expression.
Her gaze rapidly changed between us and Nikolai.
“Hey! I’m back! What’s for breakfast?”
Even though we were on the second floor, Max’s voice was very loud, so we were able to hear it.
I breathe out a sigh and said:
“I’m gonna come down and prepare some! Please wait in the living room!”
“Oh!”
Max curtly replied to me and with a loud thud, he closed the door.
“Well, I’m gonna go down for a bit. I’ll be back later. Keith will be at the door side. If you need anything, just call him.”
“Okay.”
Even though, I noticed that Keith had a face that said, ‘Don’t leave me alone with them’, I ignored it and left the room.
In my heart, I apologized to him and promised to make his favorite for lunch.

The Last Marshal
Weird West Fantasy Noir Once the Republic Marshals brought order to the chaotic lands along the Frontier, facing dangers both human and supernatural with ancient wisdom and a six-gun —but that was a long time ago. Destroyed by conspiracy and betrayal, all that remains of that secretive order is one nameless man on a trek though the West seeking revenge on the woman he blames for the Marshals' fall and his disgrace. When a visitor from our world joins him on his journey, they together must confront the horrors of a strange land, the mysteries of the past and the real meaning of their quest for justice. The world of Tellus is what 19th Century Earth would have looked like if the stories of Poe, Ambrose Bierce, Lovecraft and William Hope Hodgeson were real. History in this world moves slower. The old faiths persist and civilization never conquered the dark corners of the map, at least not without being inextricably changed. Technology and culture takes a little longer to evolve in this land, as people here tend to spend more time pursuing their elaborate revenge plots or trying to avoid being the next sacrifice to the Outer Gods rather than advancing science or statecraft. Imagine Cormac McCarthy by way of Edgar Rice Burroughs, though a little less testosterone-drenched than that description would imply. Three caveats: First, there are deep mysteries here, including how such a world came to be and who controls it. Second, this world is not wholly unconnected from our own. There is a historical point of divergence, but in the distant past. To paraphrase Twain: history in this world is not a repeat of our own, but it does often rhyme. And finally, this is not a setting that lends itself to happy endings.
