The Helix: The Arc, by NeoPhantom
Hello, My name is NeoPhantom, Neo for short. I’ve always loved writing fanfictions in the past, but took a break from doing so due to some classes at my university. Now, with the place I used to write fanfictions shut down (it’s been 4 years by the way) and with me wanting to get back to my hobby, I’ve decided to write up here.
Some of you may have read my entry for the Birthday Celebration “The Helix: A Magical Jamboree”. That was honestly the first time I’ve written anything since back then, so it may not have been my best work. I’m aware of how much detail it lacked, especially compared to some of the works I’ve seen in this site. However, now I want to do my very best to entertain you all in my story, not just write a swift one to test the waters as well as my skills to ensure they haven’t diminished too much.
However, in order to keep some open possibilities, I’ll write the story in the same world as my previous work, a game called The Helix. Just what this game world is and how different it is from what you’ve read before… Well, read on.
Prologue: The Helix
The Helix. A Virtual game world created less than 3 years ago. Not the first virtual game in existence or the first one of its kind, but it has been the one played the most since its release. The reason for this is simply because it’s apparent infinity in terms of liberty.
Most games claim that the game is left to the player, that the player makes the choices and changes the world themselves. But very few of these games are truthful about things as the operators can easily change details and impose themselves and their ideas upon the players, activating grand events in order to move the players in the direction of their choice. Sure, they trick players into believing they have a choice by making several possible ways for a quest to end, but even so the possible endings are somehow always pre-determined. If a player makes a choice outside the predictions, the system writes a code that forces an event to make the player or even others, change the result to one of the true options allowed. Though this was not noticed much at first, many conspiracy theories came to be and gradually proven true, making most gamers see these lying games with pity and displeasure.

Then came a company who, using a matrix of complex IA’s created a separate game world and, once completed, cut off all control power from the physical world, Eluvies. Not only this, but they also programmed the AI’s to gradually make decisions and coding according to the decisions of the players. The result was a completely independent world that players could completely control without the interference of the real world. Many adults complained about the possible consequences of letting kids run free in a world without restraints from this world, the company quickly shut down these complaints by revealing that the game would be PG-13. There were some that continued to complain about the game, either wanting the game to be limited to adults or simply wanting such a game shut down, but just by showing a few scenes of the game’s past, a revolution took over as kids of the right age shut down the complaints of the adults. Most parents just can’t say no to a child who knows what he wants, but they will at least put in place precautions.
And so The Helix was released upon the populace on July of the year 20XX. From then on, many individuals made a name for themselves in this other world, becoming famous and powerful in both worlds. Due to the temporal discrepancies between these two worlds, the mind and intelligence of people everywhere was increasing as the players developed mentally ten times faster and experiencing things others that don’t play could never experience.
Not only this, but Eluvies kept ranking records of the players, revealing only their Names, Level and Moral Affinities, which allowed the populace to know how the players are playing the game. While at first it became a controversy of handling personal information, it allowed the populace to be prepared for the next “Grand Evil Mastermind” to try to cause chaos in the world.

Due to the virtual game’s programming being easily accessible to people, The Helix was played only by those who wanted to experience that world. Others who simply wanted to make use of the properties of a virtual world, be it to study and learn new things, work, or simply hang out with others, would have their OWN virtual worlds created and shared their links with others. These personal worlds would become known as Terminals and become widespread across the globe.
The Helix still gets much attention from the populace even till today, with many secrets yet to be uncovered.

When I was twenty one I bought my first motorcycle. My only motorcycle. A Harley Davidson XLX, Sportster. Her name is Rohdindae, it comes from the Silmarillion and loosely translates to Horse of the Silent Shadows. This two wheeled mare, of iron and steel, was my sole means of transportation for almost 5 years. Rain, sleet, snow, or hundred degree heat, it didn't matter, I was in the saddle. We went all over this side of the Mississippi together. To places long forgotten by progress or filled to their capacity with humanity. Interesting word humanity, it means all off human kind in one definition, generosity and compassion in another. How often these two definitions are at bitter odds with the other, is something to be seen. These words are a mash up. Tales of the road. The people I met, stories I listened to, and the loves I saw grow, all find themselves here, mixed within these pages. From Maine to Mobile and all the places in between, where people still, somehow, cling on to the good fight. The only fight worth fighting.
