《Evolution Re:start》012 - A Little Operation

"Wake up."
"Awww." Donny groaned, his head was pounding with a hangover. He checked the time, finding out that it was only 8 am. "It's still early, we don't have to be there until noon."
"We're hitting the gym. They have one downstairs."
"Seriously, bro?"
"We can't get lazy just because we're travelling, come on." Will urged, slapping the bed.
"Ahhh! Alright, I'm up!" Donny flung his blanket off of him before he held his head in his hands, regretting that he shouted so loudly. "Oww."
The two arrived at the University of Tokyo Hospital at noon, two hours before the surgery. After giving their names at the front desk, they had to fill in some forms before being directed to the department of neurology where they were introduced to the surgeon and his surgical team—a group of doctors and nurses, taking care of them for the surgery.
"Do people getting the Neural-Chip usually come here for their surgery? Or are there other hospitals as well?" Will probed when asked if he had any questions.
"Yes, we have an excellent track record here and many people receiving the Neural-Chip implant have chosen our hospital for their surgery. There are a few other hospitals with great neurology departments in Japan but there's no need to worry. The neurology department we have here is the best in the country. It will be over before you know it."
Will and Donny were then admitted into a shared room and were told to change into hospital gowns. A nurse asked about their medical history before running a few tests. Once they were ready for the surgery, the nurse placed an IV line in Will's arm, placed him on a stretcher and wheeled him into the operating room.
The room was almost blindingly white—especially the bright light emitted from the operating lights, broken up only by the presence of all the medical equipment surrounding the room and all the blue the surgical team wore.
"Is this your first time doing a surgery like this?" The surgeon asked as his team was preparing for the surgery.
Will thought about the last time he had done this exact same surgery.
"No."
"Then I'm sure you can know the procedure. I can assure you that you'll be in excellent hands." He said, his team giving him the okay.
Will nodded his head.
"We'll be beginning then. I'll be placing you under general anesthesia." One of the nurses administered the general anesthesia with a syringe to the IV line. Will gradually began to feel a calming feeling. "How have you been enjoying your vacation in Japan so far?"

"Not bad." Just after Will answered, the drowsiness hit him.
"Are you enjoying the food?" Was the last thing he heard before he fell into a deep coma.
Will woke up in his recovery room feeling a little muddled. The nurses checked him while the feeling lasted for about 20 minutes before he snapped out of it. Other than a small pang of hunger, he felt perfectly fine. There was no pain or feeling of sickness from the surgery, although, part of his head had been shaved.
After everything was checked over again, the nursed told him he was cleared to leave.
Rather than changing his clothes straight away, Will studied one of the brochures in the room—one with the layout of the hospital on it. He waited until the coast was clear before he left the room. He casually strolled through the hospital to another section. Will ended up loitering around a vending machine in one of the hallways, keeping watch of a couple rooms down the hall.
After standing around for a good 15 minutes, the chance he had been waiting for arrived. One of the doctors left their office, giving Will and chance to sneak inside. He sat down at the computer behind the desk and found that it needed login credentials. He brought out a familiar USB stick and plugged it into the computer, the program running itself.

Will shut off the program quickly to see what went wrong. On the login screen, a highlighted red warning message in Japanese letters stood out to him. Although, he wasn't great at reading Japanese there were similarities between Japanese and Chinese characters, and he could get the gist of the message.
"Shit."
The phone rang at the moment.
Is someone calling to check up on the failed logins? Their security here is better than I expected. Will thought as he grabbed the USB stick and immediately left the office before someone came to investigate. Plan B then...
Will roamed the halls and soon found himself in a waiting room near the doors to the restricted area of the hospital. There was a security guard keeping watch of the door, leaving Will standing to the side thinking of a way through. As he was doing so, he observed the other people in the room.

What stood out to him was a bored looking nurse at the reception desk, a man that was whispering loudly on the phone in a corner, and a mother who was placating a child that wanted something from the vending machine. After the mother told her child to sit down and wait for her, she approached the reception desk.
Will took the opportunity to approach the child.
"Hey, kid. Do you want to make a little money for some snacks?" The child perked up instantly but held himself back.
"My mom told me not to talk to strangers."
"This is a hospital, it's a very safe place. And your mom is right there isn't she? There's even an officer over there keeping watch, right?"
"Yea..."
"Listen..."
"Akio."
"Akio." Will nodded and instructed him on what to do. "That's all you have to do. If you do this, I'll give you enough money to buy out all the snacks. But you have to keep it a secret, okay?"
Akio nodded. "But what does drugs mean?"
"If you don't know what it means, you can ask Mister Officer."
Akio ran off to the security officer and exchanged a couple words with him while pointing at the man on the phone. After hearing the words drugs come out of a child's mouth the officer decided to have a chat with the man, leaving his post. Will took the chance to sneak by him and through the double doors to the restricted area.
Will soon found a room down the hall labelled 'Patient Records' and quickly hid himself in the room. The room was filled with shelves full of folders and files. Will found the 'M' section and after a quick thumbing through the folders, he sighed in relief when he found the file he was looking for.
'Masaru Matsumoto.'
Without delay, he snapped the file open and scanned through the medical history section to make sure he had the right person. After confirming that this Masaru Matsumoto had an operation for the Neural-Chip a couple of years ago, Will immediately scanned for the one piece of information he needed to know. Blood type.
"Blood type, blood type." Will muttered as he skimmed through the file until he found it. "Here. Blood group."
When he finally read the letters written on the line, Will couldn't help but laugh out loud.
"Of course, it's like this..." He laughed at the ridiculousness of the situation. "It wouldn't be a one of a kind bloodline otherwise."
Because there on the line—written in ink right next to 'Blood Group', AB+ stood out.
Everyone was fighting over this bloodline but he happens to have the greediest blood type of them all. Will thought sardonically.
AB+ was a rare blood type that only appeared in roughly 2% of the population. The properties of this blood type was that while people with AB+ blood can receive blood from anyone, the only people who can receive AB+ blood were others with the same blood type.
And Will's blood type was not AB+.
He could only give up now. The man was also currently working for the military, so it would be too dangerous to make a move on him anyway. Perhaps Will could come up with something in the future but at this point he couldn't afford to be caught and he didn't have enough time and his trip was coming to an end.
Will let out a sigh as he put the file back in its place. As he was leaving the room, he ran into a nurse, who realized that there was someone in the restricted area who shouldn't be.
"Excuse me, what are you doing here?" She asked. "You shouldn't be here."
"Do you know where the cafeteria is?" Will asked in English, he looked around the area like he was lost. "Cafeteria. Food. Do you understand?"
"Uh...what do I say..." The nurse was suddenly at a loss and she was now looking around herself, trying to find help.
"Sho-ku-dou."
"Ah! Yes, yes, cafeteria, the cafeteria." The nurse nodded like a hen at words she finally understood. A look of relief covered her face. "This way, please follow me." She said, leading the way out of the restricted area.
After grabbing a bite to eat, Will returned to his room and changed into some comfortable clothes. He remembered that he owed some money to the kid from earlier, so he returned to the lobby earlier and found a restless Akio who became ecstatic when he received Japan's equivalent of $100—a ¥10,000 note.
When Donny got out of surgery over an hour later, Will paid their bills—a little over $10,000 together, including the cost of surgery, the Neural-Chip itself, meals, and cost of the room. Together with the plane tickets, this trip put a large dent in their bank accounts. Donny complained but Will knew it would be worth it in the future.
When he later returned to his hotel room, Will opened up his phone to connect it to the Neural-Chip.

What seems like an innocent game trope turns into a nightmare. This is a story of tragedy and the path to ultimate power. All in the hopes of an uncertain survival. _________ This fiction has NOT been abandoned. I made a haughty promise earlier to not worry because I'll continue this series, and with things lately, I've only proved myself a liar. Further promises dwindled, and I've lost trust. So many things have been going on recently that I've been booked. I will refrain from making any future guarantees or promises as my busy schedule will stay with me for a long long while. Time for me to actually spend on writing and revising won't appear until at the least November 19. I won't say expect that's when I'll restart, but you can expect expecting it to maybe happen. That's really shallow. But with everything going on, I've let my small reading base down. I apologize. I still stick by my statement though that I won't abandon this project. I plan to stick it to the end, no matter the delay. Most importantly, thank you everyone; readers who both like and dislike my work. I appreciate your time spent on my dumb imagination. Stay toasty my readers in this winter season. Cheers. UPDATE: We're back on track. Thank you for your patience. Any future readers, heyo! Glad you're here. UPDATE 2: So far it's been 21 days since I last uploaded a chapter. The best thing done for any fiction, no matter how good it is, is that it continues, and I have a bad history with that. 1 fiction on hiatus and already more delays with less than 20 chapters in this fiction. I've been very preoccupied with adding more things to do in my life rather than actually committing to any particular thing. That applies primarily to this. I cannot abandon this, as busy as my future looks and will look as I get busier and busier. Someday, I hope, I will be able to sit down and just write. just. write. But for now, I ask for patience. I suppose I'm glad this fiction hasn't picked up so that I don't disappoint too many people if any really. But I need to commit and it's going to happen sometime and sometime soon. No more flowery words. I'll see you later. UPDATE 3: It's very evident I won't be able to pick up this story for a while. With AP Testing, competitions, and other things I am busier than ever. But I must complete this fiction. I have too. Until next time. UPDATE 4: It is now the summer. I owe everyone an apology. Chances are, nobody's around to see this, and that is okay. I only blame myself for this sort of brokenness of a fiction, not that it is actually that bad but I am just exaggerating it for dramatic effect. But what's not exaggerated is the severity of my broken promise. I apologize for my naive claims about finishing a novel that I couldn't finish and that I didn't have the discipline to finish. Nor the skills, really, I was and am still an immature writer. What is to place now? I want to make it clear I understand this is my fault. I will man up to this. And I will accept any criticism. I understand I messed up. Reading Stephen King's On Writing made it clear to me that I need to do two things:Read lots. And write lots.I have done neither. If I don't have the time to read often, how do I expect to write? I need to become more experienced. I need to become a serious writer. So if I want to dream of continuing, I need to at least fulfill both requirements. I enjoy writing. I haven't written seriously outside of school in a while. I planned to write this summer and finish this. I made a lot of promises that I didn't keep.So there's that. I won't enact any self-pity, or be foolishly obsessed. What I did was wrong, and I must deal with it. I let down readers. And I apologize.I hope I can find forgiveness. This is a writer's sin.I won't promise I'll finish this. I intend to finish this, at some point, because writing is fun and I want to write. But how things are don't reflect that. Maybe I'll finish this at some point. Maybe I won't. I won't be naive to make that promise.I thank everyone who has read this if this is the end. If not, and hopefully not, I thank everyone who is to read future chapters. I thank everyone who allowed me to live in the miniscule little dream of mine as I passed my days. I thank everyone who cares enough to read this. Until next time, peace everyone. Thank you. You are all great readers and great people. I wish everyone the best in whatever reading/writing endeavors follow you henceforth.
