“Tommy!” Jimmy yelled out.
I got myself up off of the floor and tried to control my breathing. My face was still red, but the tears were no longer rolling down my cheeks. I ran out into the hallway to see what was going to happen.
Jimmy had stormed down to Tommy’s room and began banging on the door. I stayed in the doorframe of our room and watched him. Tommy opened up his door and I Jimmy swung his fist out to connect with Tommy’s face. He shouted out and fell back into his room.
This was Jimmy protecting trying to protect me. He knew that Tommy hurt me and now he wants to punish Tommy so he’ll never do it again. I couldn’t stop myself from walking foreword to watch them.
They were sprawled out on the floor. Jimmy was on top of Tommy and swung his fist down onto his face. Tommy screamed out in pain and swung out to hit him in the chest. Blood wash gushing out of his nose and was splattering the floor. I was going to have to clean that up in the morning.
“Why’d you touch her?” Jimmy shouted at him.
“What are you talking about?” Tommy had his hands up over his face as he tried protecting himself.
“You touched my girl, Tommy! MY girl! I’m going to kill you!”
I wanted to rip Jimmy off of Tommy, but I knew that wouldn’t be a bad idea. Jimmy would punish me for getting in the way. Anyways, I was too weak to make any kind of a difference. I just watched from outside of the doorway.
“No I didn’t!” Tommy yelled out as he tried to deflect the punches.
Charles came flying into the room and pulled Jimmy off of Tommy. He held back Jimmy’s arms as he tried to leap out at Tommy again.
“Stop it now, boys!” Charles ordered them.
Jimmy’s chest was heaving up and down as he tried to cool down. Tommy got up off of the floor and wiped away the blood of his face with the back of his hand. Charles let go of Jimmy’s arms and stood in between them. Tommy looked over at me peering at them and furrowed his eyebrows.

“What did you tell him?” he asked me.
His voice was drenched in anger and rage. It made me want to hide completely behind the wall, but I couldn’t go anywhere now. I should have stayed in the bathroom.
“She didn’t have to tell me anything,” Jimmy spat. “I saw the bite on her.”
“Did you bite her?” Charles asked Tommy.
Tommy’s face paled and he bit down onto his lip. He couldn’t lie about it. There was only one way I could get a bite mark on me while I was in the basement.
“Well, yeah,” Tommy admitted. “But-“
Charles put his hand out to silence Tommy. He shut his mouth immediately and didn’t say another word. Charles looked over at me and motioned for me to come forward.
“Come here for a moment, Juliet,” he told me.
I timidly walked out from behind the wall and over to Charles. All of their eyes were on me and I knew they were focusing on the mark on my shoulder. He moved all of my hair away and ran his fingers across the crescent shape wounds.
“Why would you do that to her?” Charles asked Tommy.
“Because she was making so much noise,” Tommy started to lie. “She wouldn’t shut up or calm down. I know I’m not supposed to punish her, but else was I supposed to do? I had to hold her down so she wouldn’t take off her blindfold off or run up the stairs. She was trying to run away. She’s not as settled down as you think she is, Jim.”
“That’s a lie!” I exclaimed.
I started to panic that Charles and Jimmy would believe him. I haven’t been here that long and I’ve already tried to run away once before, they’re more likely to believe Tommy. Jimmy would bring me back to our room and beat me for sure. He looks just as angry as he did the night he raped me.
“Juliet, stop it,” Charles told me. “Go sit down and don’t speak until you’re spoken to.”
He pointed over to Tommy’s bed and I hesitantly walked over to it. I sat as close to the edge of the bed as I could possibly be. It made me feel uncomfortable to be there. Tommy’s nose was still bleeding and Jimmy had never put on a shirt since he left our room.

“Now,” Charles said, turning his head from side to side so he could look at both his sons. “James, why do you think your brother touched Juliet?”
“Have you seen the way he’s always looking at her?” Jimmy asked his Dad. “He’s always staring at her like he wants to touch her. It wouldn’t shock me if he took the chance to once he was alone with her. I don’t think Julie would be that upset over a bite and a cop showing up.”
“She’s a girl,” Tommy said. “She’s going to be emotional.”
“Shut up, Tom,” Jimmy snapped.
He went to take a step forward, but Charles shot his hand out and he quickly stopped. My fingers were curled into the comforter. I loosened them up and stretched out my sore fingers.
“Julie,” Charles said my name and they all focused their attention to me. “Tell me the truth. If I find out you’re lying you’ll be in big trouble. It won’t be Jimmy punishing you, but me. Do you understand?”
“Yes,” I said.
“Okay. Did Tommy ever touch you?"
I swallowed hard and I could feel a lump in my throat. I could agree with Tommy’s sorry, but I’d get punished for misbehaving and they wouldn’t trust me for a while. If I told them the truth they may think I’m lying and I’ll get punished for that.
“Yes,” I said quietly.
“What?” Charles asked, leaning his ear in closer to me. He mustn’t have heard me.
“Yes,” I said again. This time a little louder.
“Where?”
I squirmed on the bed as I began to feel even more awkward. I didn’t want to admit what Tommy had done to me, especially in these kinds of details. Admitting it in front of Jimmy made it worse. I saw the look of hurt on his face and looked down at my knees.
“On my chest and legs,” I told them.
“She’s lying!” Tommy shouted out. “Look at her. She can’t even look at you and say it. She just doesn’t want to get in trouble.”
I wanted to shout out and say that he was lying, but I stayed quiet. Charles told me I wasn’t allowed to talk unless he asked me to. I just kept shaking my head.
Charles walked over to me. He got down in front of me and sat on his heels. He grabbed my chin and made me look into his eyes. They were large and dark brown, and I knew were Jimmy inherited his.
“Juliet, look me in the eyes and tell me if Tommy touched you and where?” he told me.
I took in a deep breath and locked my eyes on Charles’s. I had to tell him and make sure my voice didn’t waver.
“Tommy touched my chest and legs,” I said slowly.
Charles nodded his head and got up off of his heels. He walked back into the middle of the room.
“I think this is settled,” he said. We all looked at him quizzically as Charles put his hands behind his back. “Tommy, you don’t ever touch your brother’s girl again. Understand?”
Tommy nodded his head.
“You keep your hands to yourself until I go out in a couple years and get you yours.” He turned his attention to the other side of the room to Jimmy. “From now on you better protect your girl better. You should not be letting this kind of thing happen to her. Now everybody go to bed and have a better attitude in the morning. You’re family and there’s nothing more important than that.”
Jimmy ran over to me and grabbed my hand. He pulled me out of Tommy’s room as quickly as he could and back into ours. He slammed the door shut and spun me around in his arms. He pressed his lips up against mine and wrapped his arms tightly around my back. My hands were pressed up against his chest and I kissed him back.
“Tell me you’re mine,” Jimmy ordered me after he pulled away. He kept his face close enough so that I could feel his breath tickle against my face.
“I’m yours,” I told him.
“Only mine?” Jimmy asked, his lips tugging into a smile.
“Only yours.”
“Good,” he said pulling me in for another kiss. “You’re mine forever and I promise that no one will ever hurt you again.”
