When Jimmy reached over me to turn off the alarm, I rolled over with him as he lied back down. I started kissing Jimmy’s neck and shoulder. I needed to get on Jimmy’s good side before he would want to punish me.
“What are you doing?” he asked me.
I took my lips off of his neck and moved myself over so that I was lying directly over top of him. My hair draped down over his face and he brushed it over my shoulders.
“I’m so sorry about last night,” I told him. I tried to make my voice sound really sweet so he would forgive me sooner.
“Why’s that?” he asked me. From the tone of his voice it sounded like he was quizzing me to make sure that I knew what I did wrong.
“I shouldn’t have been asking questions,” I told him.
Jimmy’s lips curled into a smile and I felt his hands glide up my back. I leaned down and gave him a quick kiss.
“That’s my girl,” he said. “I hate to say it, but we have to get up now.”
I quickly gave him one more kiss before I rolled off of him. I made the bed as Jimmy went through the drawers getting us some clothes. He placed my pile on the edge of the bed. I was shocked when I saw that he had given me a dress to change into. It was a yellow sun dress that stopped just above my knees. It was out of season to wear and I started to shiver. Jimmy looked over at me and grabbed one of his large grey sweaters and gave it to me. As soon as I put my arms in the sleeves, Jimmy wrapped his arms around me and smashed his lips against mine. He pulled back and examined me with a smile on his lips. I was covered in fading bruises, but he didn’t care.
“You look so pretty,” he told me.
“Thank you,” I told him as I got up onto my toes to kiss him.
We went down to the kitchen and Charles and Tommy were already at the table. Jimmy and I sat down and started eating too. Tommy kept looking at me, and I tried to avoid his gaze.
Breakfast was quickly over and they were out the door. I cleaned all of the dishes and put them away. After I opened up the door to the closet I looked at brushes and buckets. I was planning on scrubbing the stains off of the kitchen floor today, but I didn’t want to ruin the dress Jimmy gave me. He would punish me for that, and as superficial as it sounds, it was one of the only things he gave me that actually fit.

I went into the kitchen and opened up the cupboards under the counter. They kept all of their ingredients there for when I was cooking. I got down and looked at what they had. I saw flour, sugar, chocolate and vanilla and decided I was going to bake instead of clean.
I have spent every day since I got here cleaning, I could skip half a day without them noticing. I didn’t have a recipe, but I tried to think back to those classes they made me take. I was pretty sure I remembered how to make them. I was afraid though to screw up and get punished for wasting food.
I mixed all of the ingredients together and separated the dough onto the sheet. I sat down in front of the oven as I watched them grow as they baked. The delicious smell started to fill the house and when I thought they were finished I pulled them out. I did this four times before I used up all of the dough.
I piled the cookies up onto a plate and picked up the one on the top. As I tasted it, I was praying that it tasted good. If they tasted awful I couldn’t possibly let Jimmy, Charles or Tommy eat them. How would I hide them all though?
My worries turned out to be pointless as the delicious taste filled my mouth. I put the plate up on to the counter and I couldn’t wait until they tasted them. I was sure they were going to like them.
I did the rest of my chores through the day and waited for them to come inside.
--
The food was already on the table when they came in, so they washed up before eating. None of them noticed the cookies until after they were finished. I was collecting all of the empty plates and putting them into the sink.
“What are these?” Tommy asked picking one up.
“I was baking today,” I said.
He bit into one and his eyes grew big. It was the reaction I was hoping for.
“God dammit, Jim,” he said after he swallowed it. Jimmy said there was no cursing in the house, but I didn’t know if that counted as swearing. “You’re girl is perfect. These are even better than Jenny’s.”
Jimmy and Charles walked over to the plate and each took one. I started to fill the sink with water as they scarfed down a couple more.
“They are really good, Julie,” Jimmy told me.
“He’s right. You did a fine job,” Charles said.
I could feel the heat rise up to my cheeks and I dunk my hands in the hot soapy water.

“Thank you,” I told all of them.
I heard Tommy run upstairs and Charles murmured something to Jimmy before going into the living room. Jimmy walked up behind me and slid his hands around my waist. He kissed my neck and rested his chin on my shoulder as I washed the dishes.
There couldn’t possibly be a time in my life I felt happier. I had a caring family around me who wanted to protect and love me. Out of all the foster homes I’ve been, I have never once felt that before.
The stones of the driveway began to crunch and I felt Jimmy take his chin off of me. I looked up out the window over the sink. Through the bars on the window, I could see a car pulling up the driveway. My heart jumped as I saw the words painted across the side.
Police
“Dad!” Jimmy yelled out after quickly taking his arms off of me. He ran towards the living room, but Charles was already running out. He must have seen the car already. “There’s a cop here.”
“I saw,” Charles said walking over to the stairs. I wiped my hands on the towel. I wasn’t sure where I was supposed to go or do. “Thomas! Come down quick!”
Jimmy ran over to me and cupped my face in his hands. I could see the panic on his face and that made me scared. I have never seen him afraid of anything before.
“Julie, I know you’re a good girl, but you need to go with Tommy right now,” he ordered me. “You two are going to wait in the basement for a bit. Do what he says, and don’t you dare make a sound. I’ll be here when it’s over. Understand?”
I nodded my head and before I could speak, Jimmy had already pressed his lips up against mine. I could see Charles giving orders to Tommy and Tommy nodding his head. Jimmy ripped the towel out my hands and spun me around so I wasn’t facing him. My vision quickly went black as he wrapped something around my head; I quickly realized that it was the towel.
A rough grip grabbed my wrist and started running with me. It had to be Tommy because Jimmy was rarely that rough with me anymore. Every step I took felt disorientating as I couldn’t tell where I was going.
We stopped and I felt a pain in my stomach and my feet were no longer touching the ground. He was carrying me over his shoulder down the stairs. When he finally put me down on the ground, he slid me across the floor towards him. My back was pressed up against his chest and I felt his legs against mine.
He didn’t hold me the way that Jimmy usually does. His hands roamed all over my body and were soon up to my chest. He began grabbing and squeezing me and I let out a yelp of pain.
“Shhh,” he whispered into my ear. “You’re not supposed to be making a noise, Juliet. You don’t want me to have to punish you. Do you?”
I shook my head from side to side. I could feel the tears burning at my eyes and my bottom lip was trembling. Tommy kept his hands on my chest until he moved one so he could brush the hair off to one side and began kissing my neck.
“God, you’re so hot,” he breathed into my ear. "Nice to finally feel you."
I couldn’t stop myself from releasing a whimper as he moved his hands down to my legs. It was the only thing stopping me from screaming. Jimmy told me I wasn’t allowed to make a noise, and a scream from the basement would definitely get the officer’s attention. I had to stay quiet as Tommy touched me.
“It’s not fair Jimmy gets you,” he said sliding his hands up farther my thigh.
“Stop,” I whispered to Tommy. I had to say something. “Please.”
“Tsk, tsk, tsk.” He clicked the top of his mouth with his tongue. “You aren’t allowed to talk.”
He kissed my shoulder one more time before I felt a sharp pain explode in the same spot. It wasn’t until the pain started to dull that I realized that he had just bit me. He sunk his teeth as hard as he could into the flesh of my shoulder. I began to shake even more as he brushed his lips up my neck to my ear.
“Tasty,” he said.
That one word was enough to get me crying. The tears started to roll down my cheeks and I couldn’t stop myself from sobbing. Tommy’s hand quickly shot over my mouth, trying to hold back any noise I was making.
It felt like we were in that basement for days.
