《Baseball Princess》Chapter 15: She's Back

Only one more day in this place. The doctors said that once I leave, I have to wear the bandages for a few days, come back and have them changes, then another few days, then come back and hopefully get them off.

Daniel has to stay for another week after me. Ben still can't practice, but Tommy just got his stitches out so now he can.

I start school on Monday. The doctor told me that I still need to use crutches until they give me the okay. Tommy offered to walk me to every class and carry my backpack.

Tommy also helped me with all of my homework. And he was my psyciatrist. Tommy is basically everything.

I tried to sleep, but I couldn't. After all, I just ate dinner.

I decided to flip through channels until I felt sleepy.

Coming back to school was surprisingly easy. Everyone was really nice about it, and wanted to sign my cast. Sadly, the team already covered the whole thing.

I was kept up-to-date on my schoolwork, thanks to Tommy. He even got me a little ahead.

Tommy kept his word in walking me to every class. I kept telling him that someone else could, so he wouldn't be late to class, but he insisted.

During practice, I sat on the bench with Ben. We talked the whole time, about all sorts of things.

Ben wasn't allowed to drive, so Mark drove both of us home. So convinient that I managed the varsity team, a.k.a. the guys who can drive.

I haven't talked much with my parents about the subject. They know that it's not any of our faults.

Sam and Em haven't been talking to me, either. I feel so distant from them. They are my sisters, for crying out loud!

On Saturday, I walked (more like, crutched) with them to get some ice cream. I figured we can bond while laughing at how sticky the tables were.

It's nice just to leave it all behind, for once. This whole managing thing took over my life. Sometimes I just need to forget about it.

The sun shone bright. I can't believe how warm it is, already. Luckily, there weren't many cars on the road, so I could enjoy a quiet walk. Except the girls were talking.

Sam and Em were really good about the situation. They even told me that they thought Tommy liked me.

"You can't be serious! We're just friends," I replied.

"But he likes you. Did any of the other guys offer to help you to class, even though it meant they'd be late everytime?" Em said.

For being ten and twelve, they're pretty great. They do nails amazingly, they figure out boys better than me, and they can still loosen up and have a good time.

"Well, no, but-"

"No but's. He likes you. So forget about Daniel, he doesn't remember it, and be with Tommy. You always have fun with him, anyways," Sam said.

Maybe they were right. I should forget about Daniel. After all, he already forgot about me.

"Call him right now and tell him to meet us here," Em instructed.

"Yeesh," I muttered, scrolling through my contacts, looking for Tommy.

He answered immeadietly. "Hey, Lins. What's up?"

"My little sisters," they glared at me, "want you to come to the ice cream place with us."

"Fun, I'll be there in a few," he replied.

"Alright, bye."

"Bye."

I know that Tommy lives a few minutes of walking distance away. I live about ten, and we're a little over halfway there, so it'll be perfect timing.

"Don't say anything about it, alright?" I said to Sam and Em.

"Fine," they groaned. If they want us to be together, it won't be forcefull.

When we got there, I could see Tommy waiting. He smiled, and waved us over.

"Hey, Lins. Hey, little Sam and Em," Tommy said. He gave them high fives, then came up to hug me.

I heard Sam ans Em giggle, so I kicked my foot out, hoping to hit at least one.

"How are you doing?" Tommy asked, once we pulled away.

"A lot better, thanks to these rascals," I said, laughing.

"Thanks, you two. I always love to see a smile on Lindsey's face."

My cheeks turned a bright pink, so I suggested that we order. Being the kind guy he is, Tommy paid for all of our ice cream.

"You didn't have to," I said, sitting down next to him.

"I have a job. You don't. Simple as that," he responded.

I became aware that this was the table that Daniel and Ben and I sat at. I tried to forget it, and focus on Tommy.

"Daniel gets out tomorrow. He'll be back at school on Monday. I helped him with his homework last night," Tommy said, breaking the silence.

"Did he remember school?" I asked.

"Yeah, actually. He just forgot his memories. It's a good thing he knew all of us in middle school, or he would probably be freaked out," Tommy replied.

"Good. Wouldn't want him to fall behind on his work. Especially two years' worth."

"Yeah."

It went silent again. I ate my ice cream, and looked at Sam and Em. They were on a bench, watching us with eagle eyes.

"Do you still want to be with Daniel?" Tommy blurted. I had a hard time understanding what he said at first.

"I-I don't know. I mean, he forgot about us, so maybe I should, too. Sam and Em want me to move on," I said, truthfully.

"Move on to whom?"

"Well, they think someone else on the team likes me, and maybe I kind of like him back."

"Oh."

Tommy looked down at the ground. I put a hand on his shoulder.

"What grade is he in?" Tommy tried.

"He's a junior."

"Big help that was. There's ten of us."

Then it looked like he had a realization moment.

"I'm a junior," Tommy pointed out.

"And I'm a freshman," I mocked.

"Is it me?"

"Yep," I said. When he gave me a surprised look, I added, "I'm not going to lie to you."

"Well, they were right about me liking you. A lot, too," Tommy said.

"Good. Because I like you, too. And that gash on your forehead makes you look macho. I can't believe it's still there," I said, laughing.

"Well, you still have an ankle brace, and bandages on your chest. It's only been a week."

"A week and a day," I corrected.

"And Daniel still has a shot at getting his memory back. We just have to remind him of things."

I sighed. Everything has to do with Daniel, doesn't it. It's like I'll never get a break. Never ending pain.

Tommy seemed to notice my sadness. He stood up, and offered a hand.

"I'll walk you home," he said, to get rid of my confusion.

We held hands, and walked over to Sam and Em. I told them that we're walking home.

They must of been on a sugar rush or something, because they skipped ahead of us. Tommy and I walked slowly, laughing and chatting.

When we got back to my house, Sam and Em ran inside.

"I'm taking you to Daniel. Maybe we can trigger his memories," Tommy said.

"But what if he remembers us dating, and wants to get back together?" I was really unsure. Now that I have Tommy, do I really want that?

"Then you can choose. Just remember who was there for you when he wasn't," he responded. I nodded, and we walked to his house.

Tommy doesn't live to far away, but it took us a while to walk there.

"I have an english progect," I said, swinging our arms to the rythym of our steps.

"About what?"

"A twenty page essay. Any topic. Have any ideas?"

"You could write about me," Tommy joked.

"Yeah right. What if I wrote about being manager? Or, even better, the amazing bond of teammates?"

"That'd be cool."

We walked up his driveway, and Tommy opened the garage. By now, it's already 3:24.

We got in his car, and drove to the hospital. I started brainstorming on subtopics for the essay.
