《Baseball Princess》Chapter 12: The Hospital

My head raged. I was tempted to yell for my mom to bring me an Advil, but she was probably busy.
The sun shined so bright, I could see it through my closed eyelids.
I tried rolling over, but winced in pain. My ribcage throbbed.
"Ah," I groaned, trying to transfer back onto my back.
"She's awake," I heard someone say.
So now my parents let them into my room while I'm sleeping? What happened to the whole "don't get raped?"
I tried to peel my eyes open.
Oh shit.
This isn't my room. It's a hospital room.
"Wh-wh," my mouth tried.
"Sh, we'll tell you everything in a minute. The doctor has to talk to you first," a voice said. I couldn't make out his face, but it looked like Mark.
"Lindsey?" An unfamiliar voice asked. Probably the doctor.
"Yes?" I replied.
"Do you remember what happened?"
Flashing lights. Blackness. The car.
"Was I in a car accident?" I asked, my voice barely audible.
"Yes. Everyone is alive. Try to remain calm as I speak, alright?"
I nodded, but instantly regretted it. My neck hurt, too.
"The car was hit in the back left. You were injured from the impact. A few ribs cracked, a broked ankle, and you might suffer from amnesia of a few hours before the incident. Can you remember what you did before getting into the car?"
"Where's Daniel?" I said, harshly.
"Answer my questions and I'll fill you in on all three of the other passengers."
"We were doing laser tag. Our team won three out of five."
"Good. Can you feel any pain?"
"My neck hurts like heck, and my ribs are tingly. And I have a headache," I responded, rubbing my temples.
There was an IV in my hand. I screamed, and held it away from me. I have a blood-needle-injury fear. Human anatomy gives me nausea.
"Alright. A nurse will bring you medication. As for your friends, Thomas made it out with a few scratches. Benjamin has a sprained wrist and a few deeper scratches. Your friend Daniel is in a medically induced coma."

"Coma?" I whispered. I could barely even hear myself.
"Medically induced. We can wake him whenever we need, but he suffers from a lot of damage, so we want to give him more time to heal."
"What damage?" I feel nosy.
"Shattered arm bones, which was already casted, then some damage in the part of the brain that stores memory. It wasn't major, so the greatest lost will be the past few years. We believe that he will only lose the past year or two."
"Past year?"
"Are you going to keep repeating what I say?"
"No, I'm sorry. Can I see him?"
"Not right now. Some of your friends want to visit, would you like to see them?"
I nodded, and the doctor went to the door. A nurse rushed in with a cup and some pills. She had me take them, which I did immeadietly.
The nurse was helping me sit up in the bed as the boys were walking in. My parents were just behind them.
"Lins," Mark said. He was first to cone over and take my hand.
I flinched when I remembered the IV. I tried my hardest not to look at it.
"Hey," I croaked.
"It was a drunk driver. It wasn't any of your faults'," he replied, wiping a tear from my eye with his other hand.
I was strong when I was alone with the doctor, but around them, I couldn't hide it. This was devastating.
"Wh-what if he doesn't remember any of it?" I trembled, more tears falling.
"He will. He has to."
Mark was a great guy and all, but he wasn't very good with sympathy.
"Hey, fellow survivior," Tommy said, trying to lighten the mood.
"Oh, your forehead!" I gasped.
There was a huge gash covered with stitches.
"Yeah, I have to sit out until they take the stitches out," he replied, smiling at me.
"What about Ben?" I asked them.
"He was awake a few hours ago. We already visited him," Mark said.
"What time is it?" I questioned.
"It is one o'five in the afternoon on Saturday."

Have I really been asleep for nineteen hours? Hey, at least I can still do math.
"Ben said that as soon as they let him out, he's coming to see you first," Tommy said, still trying to improve my mood.
"First? Who's second?"
"Daniel, of course."
"Did you guys see Danny?"
"Yeah."
"Oh."
I sighed. I need to see him. Part of me wants to wait until he's good enough for them to wake him up.
"We can try to convince the doctor to let us wheel you too his room, if you want," Tommy tried.
"Please," I replied.
"Stop hogging her," John said.
Mark and Tommy backed away. The whole team, minus Danny and Ben, of course, was standing in front of me. All of them had something in their arms, whether it was a giant stuffed animal, lilies(my favorite flower) or food.
They set the bears on my bed. Ten in total. There was eight vases of lilies on my nightstand, and plenty of food on the couch.
"Excuse me, this is my daughter," my dad said, parting through the line of boys.
Him and my mom rushed to me. Sam and Em were close behind.
Since I couldn't hug them without wincing, I just sat there. I couldn't even hold their hands without thinking of the IV.
I talked to them for a few, continusly reminding them that I am fine.
"Lins! A nurse is coming to take out your IVs so we can take you to Daniel's room!" Tommy yelled.
Him and Mark must've slipped out without me noticing. Now, the had a wheelchair and huge grins.
A nurse did come. I shielded my face when she took the IV out and covered my hand with a big bandaid. Then she instructed Mark and Tommy to help me into the chair.
Thank God no one saw my back, I'm pretty sure they would've seen my butt. And I don't have a bra on. Then again, my whole chest is taped up, belly button to armpit level.
"Don't go too fast," I warned as the rolled me into the hallway.
"No promises," one of them said.
"I'm injured! You best promise!"
All I got was chuckling from both. I rolled my eyes, and held onto the armrests.
Daniel's room was a ways away from mine. How they knew their way around was beyond me.
The door was opened. I couldn't see anything since I was sitting. The boys wheeled me closer, and helped me stand.
I winced in pain as they wrapped their arms around me to support my weight.
The worse thing was Daniel. His face was purple and swelled. His forehead was bandaged. Left arm in a cast. I couldn't even see his legs.
"Danny," I whispered.
No movement. He's unconcious, dumbass, I scolded myself.
"Can I kiss him?" I asked the boys. After all, they were pretty much in control of my body, since I was so limp.
They groaned, and turned away. But, they held below the bandages and lowered my face. I gave Danny a quick kiss on his swollen lips, then sat back down.
Tears slid as I was wheeled back. The boys helped me back onto my bed. I cuddled with the stuffed animals and read all of the cards.
After an hour of boredom, I fell asleep.
-
When I woke up, a nurse gave me a paper and asked what I wanted for dinner. My stomach growled, since I haven't eaten all day.
"I want chicken," I said.
"What kind, dear?"
"Strips. And can I have some Jello cubes too?" I asked.
"Yes, you may. I'll be back in a few!"
I've been craving chicken for a while now. And Jello. I haven't had Jello in a long time.
She came back quickly, and help set up the tray onto my lap so I could eat in bed. Sometime when I was asleep, the IV made it back in my arm. I tried to eat with just my left hand.
After I ate, they changed the bandages on my chest. I felt self-concious, even though the nurses doing it were all women.
They hooked something up to the IV, and I got really sleepy. They wished me a good night and left me.
Before I drifted off, I noticed Mark and Tommy laying on the couch. So sweet of them to stay with me.

Apollyon's Curse
Within the pages of folklore and fantasy, tales of people who chase after the dream of eternity, of living forever, rarely find a happy ending. They are either struck by the grim truth of reality, give up, and return to mortality or face a ghastly realization of their wishes. The latter often the worse fate, as they come to realize, only far too late, that what they sacrificed was worth far more than the time they gained. Ultimately, the common thread in these stories is that “immortality is as much a curse as it is a blessing”. People either realize it early and give up or are doomed to inevitably face its consequences. In the world Enrich lives in, that saying does hold merit. Every pathway towards eternal life has shackles of its own. They bring those high above down to the ground, evening the playing field. It is thanks to these fundamental laws that ambitious mortals are able to defy the heavens and achieve immortality themselves. The variety of methods result in each of these bindings varying in intensity and degree of freedom. Enrich’s path doesn't break this trend. Though, after what he did to himself, most wouldn’t even consider him a living thing anymore. On the day of his ascension, a world’s worth of souls were melted and recast. On that day, the human’s path had reached its conclusion, recast into Apollyon. An artifact, a weapon, is eternal, after all. As for the curse? The payment will be made, as it must. So why not offload the curse to someone else? Mortals throw their lives away for all manner of petty reasons, noble or otherwise, especially in desperation. Eventually, someone will be willing to foot the bill. Most will if given the chance. The bait is far too tempting, after all. Power, status, knowledge. All at their fingertips. If only they say “yes”. And Apollyon is very willing to help any lost souls. If they give up everything in return, of course.
