"Violet, Klaus, Duncan, Isadora, Quigley. Mr. Snicket requests your presence in his office." The five stood up. Violet and Isadora smiled at the Santiago twins, Marco and Elena. Both had been very kind to the group and had developed a bond over inventing with Violet (Elena) and a love for literature and mapping with Duncan, Klaus, Isadora and Quigley (Marco). "Go." Elena whispered, smiling back at them. The five walked out of the classroom, the VFD insignia pin glinting on their chests.
"Esmé and Carmelita are alive?"
"Apparently so. Your task is to infiltrate through the two and collect information. Word of warning, however, Carmelita has become a stunningly gorgeous girl-everything she said about herself came true, apparently-and has mastered the skill of manipulation. This warning is not so much targeted toward the girls, more to the boys. Be wary of other's actions, make sure you don't fall into her trap. They will be attending the Starlight Dance next week, the innest event of the year. You'll also be attending. The ball is in a week, so I have arranged for you to transfer to special operative training for these seven days. Now, please go visit Marie and she'll take care of your disguises."
"Aw, I'm so jealous! You get to go to the Masquerade, even if it is just for VFD. Well, here are your dresses for the girls." Marie peeked out from an overflowing closet. She had a flair for costumes and helping to disguise other agents had become her passion. "Isadora, when I saw you, I just knew that emerald green was your colour. And Violet, you'd look gorgeous in purple, but we can't risk giving away your identity like that, so I chose something blue."
Violet's dress was a big blue one. "It's beautiful! Absolutely beautiful! You made it?" Marie nodded. "Simplicity with a few jewels are in, gaudy fancy things are out. And Isadora, here's yours."

"Mesmerising! Absolutely wonderful!" Isadora cried. "Do we get to keep these?" Marie smiled. "Yes, with permission from Mr. Snicket. I'm going to get the costumes for the boys, and I'll hand-make your masquerade masks. There's only so much I can do. Please try them on." She disappeared. Violet and Isadora took the dresses into the changing rooms, and the boys took a seat on the couch. "So, you and my sister? A great couple." Klaus looked at Quigley. "What? No."
"Don't deny it. You have a huge crush on Isadora." Duncan pressed forward. "Well, you love Violet!" All the colour drained from Quigley's already-pale face as Duncan flushed bright red and stared at Marie working on a design for Isadora's mask. "You what? Duncan, I also have a crush on Violet, and" Violet and Isadora emerged, and all of them flushed, Duncan went redder. "Wow! You look...breathtaking." Marie grabbed three sets of suits from the rack in black, navy and dark green. "These will work. I just know it! Now, shoes."
Violet's
Isadora's
The boys
"Why are mine so impractical?" Isadora asked. "Well, shoe trends now are that men's have to be classic-looking, women's have to be either a little fancy, or carry big jewels, and the stores were short on a little-fancy in green, so yeah." Marie replied. Isadora nodded. "Fair enough. You should become a fashion designer one day." Marie smiled. "Really? Thanks. For Violet's hair that day, let's do a low romantic side-bun, and Isadora a messy braid with sprigs of flowers. Men, I trust you can style your hair well. And I mean well."
The boys nodded. "Yeah, ok."
Back in the Baudelaires' room, Duncan and Quigley sat on Violet's bed, Isadora on Klaus's. The Baudelaires sat on two armchairs, Sunny in Violet's arms. "So, we need dates. The romantic kind, cuz I researched quickly and couples are in." Duncan spoke. Violet nodded. "That's true. I've seen the way Klaus and Iz look at each other, so they can be dates. Kladora forever!" Violet wiggled her eyebrows at Duncan and Quigley, who both smirked along with Violet. Then they gave their siblings a knowing look. "Fine." Isadora smiled sweetly. "The secret's out then. I like you, Klaus." Klaus buried his face in his hands. "Seriously? Me too. More pressing question, who's bringing Violet?" Now it was Klaus and Isadora's turn to smirk. "Um-uh-maybe we can-uh, I put a violet under the person's pillow? If the flower's there, that means that-uh-I choose them." Everyone agreed, and Violet pulled out a violet from her pocket.

After going to the Quagmire boys' room and pointing out whose bed was whose, they left her alone. Violet quietly paced around the room, thinking. Should I dig through their stuff? Couldn't hurt to try. Opening, Duncan's trunk, she found a photograph of them together, laughing under the sun. Scrawled on the back was a I'll find you Violet, no matter what it takes. I love you so much. She smiled and scribbled something on it in reply, placing it under his pillow. Continuing to go through the trunk, she realised that a lot of the clothes in his trunk were some shade of purple, and knew that he missed her a lot while on the self-sustaining home. She quickly ran to Quigley's trunk and opened it. Maps, clothes, books, and....a harpoon gun with a diary? Reading it, she realised that he had some disturbing thoughts about Esme's side of VFD. Closing it, she put it down, and found a photograph, scribbled on it was also I love you Violet. She didn't know who to pick. Sure, she liked Quigley, he had been her first kiss, but she loved Duncan more. And then she knew.
When Duncan Quagmire slipped into bed, he tucked a hand under his pillow, and found a violet. Accompanied was a photograph of the two and he stiffened. Violet went through his stuff? Oh, well, it's done already. Turning it over, he found something new on it. Previously, there was a I'll find you Violet, no matter what it takes. I love you so much. But something new was there, in familiar cursive handwriting that he knew belonged to Violet Baudelaire.
Guess what Duncan? I love you too ;)

The Big Yoink: A Smol Detective Story
This is another fanfic set in the universe of They Are Smol, a delightful series of stories which you should totally go read right now if you haven’t. It’s a sequel to my own The Smol Detective. In this story, Oscar Williams and his adopted alien family have to determine the guilt or innocence of another human and her two alien friends. The trio stands accused of stealing a sacred relic, and if it isn’t found soon an ancient religious cold war could turn very hot indeed… Formal Disclaimer Type Thing: I do not take credit for the original setting, this story is set in an alternate version of the 'They are Smol' universe, written by the one, the only u/tinyprancinghorse. TPH takes many forms and is known by many names. He is like Nyarlathotep, only smaller and cuter and more prancey. TPH also has a Website should you require more Smol Shenanigans in your life. Which you do, so get over there and read it. The cover art for this sequel again comes courtesy of the mighty Akella, and they deserve lots of headpats from giant aliens because they are awesome.
