(Slanted = Document & Voice Recording/Sessions)
You're footsteps echo down the blank empty hallway. You had been transferred to Smith's Grove to take over Dr.Loomis's main patient. Loomis had come to you personally. He was giving up on Michael, He'd spent 15 years with Michael and had gotten nothing from it. He had heard about your track record and wanted to open a position for you.
"Of course, I see no hope in that man, he's empty." Loomis looks down. "I've spent years...So many years, trying to get into his mind." He rubs his temples. "But I've ended belly up with nothing." He pulls a sheet of paper from his desk drawer and pushes it until it's in front of you. "I know you have a good history with your patients." You take the page into your hands and glance through it. "If I were to pass this onto anyone else, it would be you." Looking up at him he sets his hand on the table before the page. "You've had no patients for a month Y/N, this is the height of your career... Don't make the wrong choice." He pulls a pen from a cup and rests it on the page. You hold it, quickly making your choice. Filling out the form he continues. "You need to keep me updated weekly, document everything." He gives you a small key, then leading you to a corner of his room. Unlocking a cabinet, your met with a drawer filled to the brim with folders. "I would really suggest looking through my work." He chuckles. "Good luck."
It took you several days to look through Loomis's work, all the documents and a few voice recordings of their sessions. He wasn't just being dramatic, he's barely gotten anything out of Michael since he was kid. Every document follows the same premise, him asking questions and getting no answer, him talking to a statue with no sight of humanity. You really should've asked to look through all of this before you excepted the job.

Stepping through Michaels hall, you see guards by his door. They jump to talk to you. "You must be Loomis's replacement?" One asks. "Huh..." The other steps towards you. "Your a huge improvement, I've been waiting for an attractive woman to work here." He scoffs. "It's all old hags." The first guard elbows the other in the side. "Michael's in there." He pulls out a ring of keys from his side. "We'll walk him to the cafeteria." You watch as the men walk into the room and handcuff the biggest human being you've ever seen. You follow the guards to the cafeteria and watch Michael sit down on the chair with his hands cuffed around the back.
"I'm Dr. L/N, I'll be replacing Dr. Loomis from now on." You weren't sure what to do, you know he doesn't talk, Loomis has asked him every question in the book. "I understand that Loomis worked with you for many years, he's told be all about you. Reaching into your handbag you pull out one of Loomis's files, the biggest and one of the oldest. "I like your masks, says here you started making them when you were a kid." Dead silence, who could've guessed. You sigh. "well, that's really all I need to say. I'll be back tomorrow." You get up and head for the door. "Your time isn't up yet." A nurse says coming in. "I've said all that I wanted too." As you make it to the doors she grabs you by the arm. "Sit back down, I'm not sitting in here with him. It's YOUR job, not mine." You huff... 10 more minutes.
"Actually, I do have more to talk about." You put your bag in the same spot and sit down. "I'm sure you don't get out much, how about I take you for a little walk tomorrow? With security of course, but I think it'd be nice for you to stretch your legs a little." You call a guard over and do your best to arrange it.

"There's no way- Are you dumb or something?" One of the guards pulls you from the chair by the arm. "Not happening, especially not on your SECOND DAY!" He plants you back on your chair and huffs. "You've got some nerve." You turn to Michael. "so... it probably won't be tomorrow." You sigh. "But I'll get it eventually."
You throw your bag on the couch and sigh, it's worse than you thought. Sitting down you put your head in your hands. How on earth are you supposed to sit there and talk to a statue for hours a day? You're gonna have to find a way to get Michael to react, in a way Loomis hasn't tried, meaning you're gonna have to stick it out in the awkward silence till you can convince the guards that Michael won't try anything... how wonderful.

Gateway
An archaeologist by the name of Søren Quinn wakes up elsewhere after boarding a plane for Iceland. Now he has to come to terms with a significant loss of recent memory and his apparent death and rebirth, provided he can survive the rigors of the Tutorial on Gateway Station and whatever waits for him after the Tutorial. Updates. When I can... sorry. Author's Note. Gateway is a portal/isekai style GameLit novel, but it has two main lead characters and will eventually have a small cast of minor lead characters to support them. There will be small elements of base building / kingdom management added as well over time, but they will not be the focus. Gateway really is a slow burn that takes some time to get going unfortunately, but I hope you find it's worth the wait. Thank you! p.s. Book One is finally done (only needed one more chapter unfortunately...) but I'm off hiatus now and will be starting on Book Two right away!
