《Taking Tammy.》(20)

The day passed slowly. Tammy watched through the window, but witnessed nothing but field.
The bungalow was too far from the house; if she wanted to come up with a plan, she’d have to make sure it would work.
It’d been hours since the family had vacated to the bungalow, but Aidan was still caught up in his resentment towards the bloke who smoked.
“I hate him,” he complained, throwing his fist at the wall fiercely. “Who does he think he is?”
Tammy stayed quiet, careful not to antagonize him.
Aidan had killed multiple people, all in front of her, and the pit in her stomach told her that he wasn’t yet done.
“His wife is scared of him,” he went on, shouting at nobody in particular. “His daughter is terrified.”
Tammy watched on as he laid his fist into the wall again, this time harder.
Aidan was a nightmare. No matter how hard Tammy tried to understand him, he would think of something new to surprise her.
She wanted nothing more than to be furious at him, even afraid of him. But there was something vulnerable about him, something she couldn’t quite grasp.
After the cigarette went out, he immediately rushed her over to the tap, apologizing frantically whilst running the cold water.
Aidan had done some wicked things, but he didn’t belong in a jail; he needed locking up in a mental asylum, where he belonged.
Another blow to the wall made Tammy wince. “He’s got them both under his oversized finger,” Aidan continued, this time turning to face Tammy.
Tammy looked away a second too late and their gaze met, fury burning in his eyes.
She sighed. “They seemed pretty normal to me,” she admitted, in her calmest voice.
“Normal?!” Aidan yelled back, “I’ll show you normal.”
He grabbed her arm in a fury, raging at her comments.
Tammy’s heart galloped as he dragged her out of the room, only starting to steady when he stopped to unlock the back door.
She let out a sigh, realization sinking in as his grip on her arm loosened.
Aidan was angry; but surprisingly, not at Tammy.

The Glyph Queen
When Winnie was thirteen, her settlement taught her how to fire a rifle. Her school practiced drills in case raiders came, and the town grew crops in their greenhouse-adapted homes, which were the only places warm enough during the worldwide nuclear winter. The Lakiran empire invades—a corporate-born nation overseen by their corporate-born queen, Victoria Paladino. They ride silent planes whose repulsion field veered bullets away. Three years of occupation later, an exemplar visits—a member of Victoria’s oversight committee rumored to read minds. He tells Winnie that she may have a unique mental power, or a flair. At the empire’s capital, the queen herself tutors Winnie to help her reach the full potential of whatever power she may have. Meanwhile, in post-war Nigeria, a streetwise teenager named Naema sees a different side of the empire. Between corruption and oppression, everyone lives in squaller. People fight over assembled food pastes. She too is told she has a unique flair, not by the empire, but by a fugitive woman who is the last vestige of an ancient witch coven, and she knows a dark secret about what the exemplars do to people like Winnie and Naema.
