《My Angel》#8

Rosalie's POV -
"Thank you for driving me home," I tell Emmett getting out the car, "I assume you can park the car."
"I have passed my driving test. Multiple times. And it wasn't like I had much of a choice."
"If you scratch it, you pay for it."
I close the door and walk into the house, hearing him drive away. My phone rings basically the minute I walk through the door. I see the caller ID and answer anyway.
"Hello Hayden."
"I wasn't expecting you to pick up."
"Why are you calling?"
"I like talking to you."
"That's it."
"Pretty much. And I wanted to inform you of my next prey."
"When are you hunting?"
"Tonight."
"Should you be talking about this on the phone?"
"It should be fine. Victim's been accused of sexual assault by colleagues multiple times, but never convicted because he's, and I quote, too nice."
"Okay. Why are you telling me?"
"So you can approve it. "
"You need my approval?"
"No. But I'd like it."
"Then you have it. He seems like a monster."
"Thank you. You read anymore of that book?"
"Not yet. I was in Seattle with Emmett."
"I like Emmett. Economics. Wears glasses."
"Yeah, it's a joke he has with himself."
"What did you do in Seattle? Visit Grey Sloan Memorial?"
"You've watched Grey's Anatomy?"
"My ex loved the show."
"Ex?"
"Yeah, at my old school. Nice kid. Shame what happened to her."
"What do you mean? You didn't..."
"No, absolutely not. She killed a family just before finals. Mum two kids. One was six, the other three."
"Woah. And you dated her?"

"I didn't know she would turn out to be a murderer."
"But you watched Grey's Anatomy with her?"
"Yeah. She was obsessed."
"Did you love her?" I ask her, a mysterious feeling of jealousy in me that I don't quite understand why it's there in my body.
"Nah. I was just bored. And she was cute."
"In answer to your question, I was at the mall."
"What did you buy?"
"A few dresses and two pairs of shoes."
'Nice. You like them? "
"Their nice. I like the boots particularly."
"Heeled or flat?"
"Heeled."
"Cool."
"Why the interest?"
"It's not necessarily the clothes I'm interested in."
"Oh really?"
"Maybe."
"I've told you a little about me. What about you?"
"First off, you've told me about what you did in Seattle. Second, what do you want to know?"
"Anything."
"Well, this is a cheap phone. Burner. I got it mostly to talk to you. I was born on the 20th of July, 1969."
"The day of the moon landing?"
"Yeah. My mum used to call me her moon child."
"Cute."
"What's your time period?"
"Born 1915."
"1915. First World War."
"1915 in America was very different to 1915 England. First World War was very different in America at that time. Didn't affect us until later."
"I know my history. Particularly the World Wars. My grandfather fought in the second one. He got a medal. My father would boast about it."
"Two truths and a lie."
"What?"
"Let's play two truths and a lie. We both have nothing better to do. And neither of us eat or sleep."
"I'll hunt later, but I've got a few hours."

"I'll start. One: My middle name is Lillian. Two: I had two little brothers when I was human. Three: my biological father worked as a Doctor."
"What were your brothers' names?"
"William and Jackson."
"What was your father's field?"
"Family medicine."
"I don't think you had brothers."
"My father was a banker. It's how we stayed well off during the Great Depression."
"Should have pegged you for someone who grew up rich."
"Your turn."
"One: I was homeschooled as my father didn't believe woman should go to school, but the law said I had to. Two: I can't cook. Three: My father wanted a boy which is why my name's Hayden."
"What was your father's profession?"
"Lawyer. He wouldn't let my mother have a job."
"He could probably be able to pay for a governess. Did she teach you to cook?"
"My mother tried, but I had such little skill, I could've burnt water"
I laugh at that. "How do you know your father wanted a boy?"
"He told me. A lot."
"First ones definitely true. It's too much detail to be fake. I think you can cook."
"Very well in fact. My governess helped teach me, as well as my mother. I've cooked for humans in the more recent years. Still got it."
"Esme cooks sometimes. For charity. And she sometimes works at the soup kitchen."
"I would. If I had a kitchen. And pots. And food. And money."
"That's a lot of ifs."
"Yeah. Why do you have a kitchen? You don't have humans over. You don't eat."
"Why not?"
"Fair point. This game is more boring than it seems."
"Yeah, a bit. It's better with more people."
"I think you're right."
"I'm always right."
"Sure you are."
"You applying to college?" I ask out of the blue, after a moment of silence.
"I need to ask for a letter of recommendation, but I was thinking about applying for Stanford or Harvard. You?"
"I have sent off applications for Alaska, Stanford and Yale. It's not a big deal for me if I don't get in though."
"I'll put Yale on the list."
"What do you want to study?"
"Law. What about you?"
"Biochemistry."
"Cool. I studied that at St Andrews a while back. Next time I want to study Archeology."
"Really?"
"Or Astronomy. I'll start high school earlier too."
"You're the only other vampire I've met that goes to school. Other than my family."
"My father didn't let me. It's a small rebellion. Plus, I like learning. And faking my death."
"What?"
"It's how I get out of my crippling debt. Unlike you, I don't have a rich family to pay for it. So I dramatically fake my death."
"That works?"
"Obviously."
"Do you need to be going hunting?"
"Yes. Do you want me to go?"
"I don't want you to not hunt. I quite like having everyone at school alive."
"Well then, I'll see you tomorrow."
"See you tomorrow."
She hangs up and I realise I've been smiling for most of the duration of the phone call. I think I like her. I pick up the book she recommended me and start reading it, reaching the end in only a matter of time.
