《Little Thief (Black Butler G/T)》Chapter Nineteen

After a nice breakfast, Kadence spent a short amount of time watching Sebastian prepare the Young Earl's meal. He was so graceful as he moved, his focus remaining on his cooking even if his crimson eyes wandered in her direction every few minutes.
When it was finally done and ready, Kadence helped Sebastian as she had the day before. She carried the appropriate amount of sugar to the teacup and dropped it in as gingerly as she could so it wouldn't splash. She then flashed a polite smile in Ciel's direction, again accompanied with a curtsy.
Sebastian watched Kadence calmly, again prepared in case she were to fall from the table or if Ciel had dared to try anything.
Ciel lifted the teacup to take a sip, only to have it reach his lips and be brought back down. "What is it about you that Sebastian seems to interested in? You're incredibly small. It's nothing to do with his lust. He cannot love. So I wonder, what is it?"
Kadence bit down on the inside of her cheek, making eye contact with the Earl and stared while struggling to come up with the right words to say. Of course, it couldn't be love.
She turned her green eyes in Sebastian's direction, struggling to read his stoic expression. She didn't really know how to respond and slowly looked back toward Ciel. "I don't know, sir."
The Young Earl was silent, his uncovered eye observing the redheaded female that stood on his table. He raised the cup to his lips and once he had taken a sip, he spoke. "Then perhaps will we have to find out for certain why Sebastian is so intrigued by you. I assume you know he is a demon now, but to mine and his own amazement, you don't seem frightened. Why is that?"

His voice was calm, disinterested. But in his visible eye, Kadence could easily see the curious glint behind that royal blue sphere. However, she did not have a definite answer to this question either. Taking a few short moments to think of an appropriate answer, she opened her mouth to speak and could feel Sebastian's eyes on her even if she wasn't looking at him. "Wh-While I am not entirely sure, I-I can certainly say it helped me understand quite a lot about him. He's kept me alive, safe. Gave me a decent place to sleep, clothing. Despite him being a demon, his kindness toward me tells me I am safe around him."
Sebastian's crimson eyes widened in disbelief as he listened, his hands tightening around the porcelain teapot that he still held.
"Kindness?" Ciel scoffed, placing his teacup back onto the saucer with an amused smirk. "Sebastian is not kind. You are probably nothing more than a new toy to him, and once he is bored of you he will cast you aside."
Kadence felt a pang of pain in her heart and forced herself not to buckle under the intense gaze. Biting down on her lip, she struggled to think of a way to respond and let the next words flow from her mouth in an unwavering tone. "If that is the fact, and I die when if he truly becomes bored of me, at least I will not have to live with the pain of betrayal."
Now it was Ciel's turn to stare at the tiny female in disbelief, his blue eye wide and blinking in shock. He soon regained his composure though and returned to a stoic, uninterested facial expression. "You're foolish. But that is another topic. Currently, we need to discuss the fact you may be useful. You do know I am the Queen's Guard Dog, yes?"

Sebastian was glad the topic changed so quickly. The Borrower's unwavering voice when she spoke that sentence confused him, but he couldn't deny he was impressed. She could be so timid and jumpy, yet at certain times she could seem incredibly strong, and stubborn at that. But he could easily see his Master's words struck her painfully.
Something else he caught was that Kadence was no longer looking in his direction. She would glance at him frequently, but once the Earl had said that, her emerald eyes now simply turned to the tabletop when she could no longer look at the boy.
"Sebastian did mention that when he first introduced me to you, sir. But I'm afraid I don't quite understand what that means." Kadence's voice was now soft, quiet, but still polite. Her eyes wandered around the grand dining room, doing everything to avoid looking at Ciel and Sebastian for the time being.
"It means I handle all the Queen's dirty work in the Underground of England. I look into murders, drug trades, smuggling, and so forth. However, sometimes gaining information can prove to be quite difficult. This is where you will now begin to come in. You're small. You can sneak in and out of a room unseen. You can eavesdrop." Ciel explained while carving up some of the pancake on his plate.
"E-Eavesdrop? Murders?" The Borrower felt her heart speed up. Struggling to keep a calm exterior, she swallowed a lump that had begun to form in her throat.
Now Sebastian spoke, placing the teapot he had been holding back onto the silver cart. "With my help of course, I'm sure your stealth skills that are already quite impressive will grow to the point where any human would be unable to detect you. We will also be using the servants as test subjects for said help. After you are introduced of course."
Kadence lowered her head to consider his words. While her heart still ached from Ciel's previous statements, she had a job to do that was currently keeping her alive. "I-I understand what you're saying. And if th-that is how I can pay you both back for what I stole, then so be it. I'll train as long as I need to."
She would never fail to surprise him. Sebastian inwardly smiled and cast a glance toward Ciel who looked as uninterested as ever. "Young Master, if you do not need anything else for the time being, shall I take her to meet Tanaka, Meyrin, Finny, and Bard?" He questioned, straightening his clothing out as he spoke.
Ciel only waved his hand dismissively, using his other to take a bite of the spongy pancake.
Sebastian offered Kadence his hand, palm up as usual on the table. This time, the raven-haired butler sensed some hesitance for her to step onto his hand. But she still did, her small body seating itself in the middle.
Without even having to ask her, he knew what his Master had said upset her. If that was a conversation he and Kadence needed to have later, so be it. For now though, it was time for her to meet the others.
