《Blood & Sugar》Chapter 17

Wanting to clear her head, Sofia takes the long route. The sun was already setting when she set off but it didn't matter. Actually, she preferred it because it meant she could roll her window down and enjoy the feel of the wind on this clear night with almost no one on the road. Unfortunately for Sofia, in her moment of complete relaxation, she must've lost track of the speed because the next thing she knows there are red and blue lights flashing in her rearview mirror and she is slowing down to pull over.

The officer gets out of his car and makes his way towards her and Sofia has to hold in a sigh of annoyance. Of course, this had to happen, she can't just enjoy something without some kind of outside interference ruining it. She tries her best not to show it on her face when he finally gets to her window and bends down to speak. He honestly wasn't what Sofia was expecting. Instead of a middle-aged man with a potbelly, it's a young guy in his early thirties with a fit physique, light green eyes, and short dark brown hair. "Hello miss. I'm Deputy Chief Sam Weston. Are you aware of how fast you were going?"

For some reason, Sofia gets the urge to laugh but resists as best as she can. It just sounded so scripted and the guy obviously takes himself very seriously. When Sofia answers that she was not aware, he must have seen a glint of amusement in her eyes. "Do you find something funny about this situation?" he asks sternly.

Shaking her head no, Sofia decides she is probably better off explaining herself at this point before she keeps making the whole thing worse. Maybe then he'll just give her a ticket and let her go on her way.

"No, not at all! I guess I just didn't expect your very matter-of-fact approach. It felt like I was in a cop show or something. I didn't mean any harm I'm just on my way home after a long day. I definitely didn't mean to endanger the lives of all the nonexistent people driving down this empty road."

Well...shit. The sarcasm wasn't really part of her plan to diffuse the situation. Sofia smiles sheepishly while doing an awkward 'please don't arrest me' shrug. It must have been at least a tiny bit endearing because a crack in his cold demeanor appears and a small smile peaks through. Although, he turns away in an attempt to hide it.

"Can you please hand me your license?"

Wordlessly, Sofia grabs for her purse and takes it out handing it over while trying not to push her luck. "Sofia Lin," he says it almost as if to himself and he slaps the license against his hand a few times looking thoughtful before leaning against Sofia's door and handing it back.

"I know it's been a tough time and you don't seem like you meant any harm, sarcasm aside. So, how about we make a deal?"

Sofia understandably, n her opinion, looks at the deputy skeptically with a raised eyebrow "What kind of deal?" she asks with weariness in her voice.

"Well, I know a Lola's Bakery box when I see one and there seems to be one right there. How about I get one of whatever is in there and, in return, I'll let you off with a warning?"

The playful look in his eyes is a drastic but welcome change from the hard-ass from before and Sofia can't help the smirk and accompanying eye roll before shaking his hand sealing the deal. Reaching over, she gently removes one of the sesame cookies from its safe little spot and hands it over. "This is gonna make my night! Now off you go. Just keep to the speed limit this time."

He goes to walk away but hesitates turning back towards Sofia. "I know you haven't been in town very long, maybe I can show you some of the good places to eat sometime." For a second, Sofia is completely thrown off. That was not what she was expecting at all. Her automatic instinct is to say no and make up some kind of excuse but seeing the hopeful look on his face, cradling the cookie as if it were a prize, she is tempted to say yes.

If anything, she will at least be making a friend and that's something that she doesn't currently have in this town. It would also be great to have some kind of plans to look forward to, maybe a night that didn't involve Sofia eating dinner on her own on the couch while watching trash TV.

"You know what? That'd be nice" and those simple words cause his entire face to light up with a smile from ear to ear and Sofia won't lie, it felt good for someone to be that excited to get to know her. She quickly gives him her number and sets off and finally gets home. The rest of the night is uneventful except for a long phone call with her sister Lara who scolds her for not calling sooner.

In bed, later on, thinking about the events of the day, Sofia stops and wonders if accepting Sam's invitation was a good thing. It is impossible for her not to think about Cassius. She softly traces her cheek where he had kissed her so tenderly that afternoon and can't deny that there is something there between them although it's too early to tell if anything would even come of it.

Would Cass be upset that she accepted Sam's invitation? There is absolutely nothing wrong with her going out with Weston. They never called it a date, just him showing her around. Hopefully, a friendship comes out of it which is completely innocent. Besides, she and Cassius aren't together in any way so there is no reason for it to matter to him. But then, why does she feel so guilty?
