there is a voice that sings me to sleep

a voice like smooth river stones

like well thought out thunder

and when he sings he whispers

that i am never alone

his words are an intricate dance

one i've stumbled through before

the way his tongue slides

flicking out the words "rose petal"

like a careful prolonged execution

teasing at an escape

begging me to say he isn't welcome here

lullabies shouldn't sound like dying

still, his lips are casting the final blow

shall i thank him?

death does count as an escape

the teasing, it seems, was not in vain

and at least i get to hear my parting music

as it all fades

there is a voice that i know

a voice like the smoothest sound of thunder

that sings me to sleep
