《After Dark》Chapter 5

William and the boys sat in the crowd of the boardwalk amphitheater. The crowd was diverse, people from all races, genders and ages gathered in the salty sea air to watch the show. On the stage, a gorgeous blonde was completing her rendition of It Had To Be You. The crowd all began clapping, all except William.

"Wasn't she swell?" Asked Bunny, the small but crazy guy of the bunch. He imagined himself with the performer, and silently doubted on his chances of ever being with someone such as her.

"She was okay, I guess." William said, not entirely impressed by the girl's performance.

"She was great." Connor, the tall of the quartet commented. However, the blonde's looks likely had a role in his judgement.

"She's perfect." Young Jack announced, looking at her in awe. William laughed at his cousin, giving him a playful nudge. Jack laughed as he looped his finger in his stiff collar.

"Don't you get too caught up in this. Remember why we're really here." William whispered to Jack. The young boy's fantasies were forced to quickly upside as he kept focused on his duties.

"I know, I know." Jack told his older cousin. "It's just she's such a pretty broad."

As Jack went on about the blonde girl, William kept his eye out along the boardwalk. He looked at the people passed by, men wearing boat hats and girls wearing their sundresses. All totally unaware of what was to be done at that very spot.

Many officers were present, but he knew that most of them would go off duty in just a little while. In the background Jack still continued talking about the blonde. To to avoid being rude, William gave his attention to his little cousin once more.

"It's just that she isn't entirely my kind of girl." William told Jack.

"What are you talking about? She's the cat's meow!" Jack tipped his newsboy cap with a large smile on his face. His cheeks were particularly red, and it wasn't entirely from the cold sea air.

"You know, my girl does a much better job at singing that song." William went on, and the men groaned. Once again William was bragging about Eliza.

"Here he goes, talking about the colored girl again." Bunny nudged Jack. William was far too busy thinking about his love to listen to Bunny's ignorance.

"She has something those other girls don't have. A certain stage presence." William went on, resting his arm on the back of his chair.

"Hey, it's not exactly Eliza making you feel that. It's Gigi." Bunny laughed from where he sat on the other side of Jack. William gave a small grin back, but it was forced. He tried not to get uptight over Eliza, after all, these were his friends. But it made his blood boil to hear anyone speak lowly of her.

Bunny noticed William didn't seem to get upset. And that's when Bunny made the mistake of continuing his idiotic chat. "You know, I guess Eliza is the one you're fond of because she's the one who gives up pussy."

Such a vulgar comment toward Eliza caused a rage within William. It was the last straw. His blood began rushing, and all his energies went into clutching his hand into a fist. Jack witnessed it the change first, almost like a metamorphosis happened right before his eyes. In a quick fight or flight, William's young cousin zoned in on William's fist, something Bunny hadn't noticed.

"You know, those black girls really know how to throw down." Bunny kept on laughing. Conner was wise enough to not comment at all.

The pupils of Jack's green eyes became constricted as he noticed William's fist began to lift. Jack sat between William and Bunny, and knick of time he stood up from his seat, lunging forward into the wooden chairs in front of him.

William's first connected with Bunny's cheek, and Connor's eyes squeezed shut at the sight of it. Once again, Bunny had said the wrong thing to the wrong person.

William hardly got in a few punches before Connor, the peacemaker of the men, broke it up. "Hey, hey, hey! Break it up. Come on."

William wasn't stopping. Connor continued begging the men."If not for each other, do it for the deal! You're gonna get us pinched!" As he tried to keep them apart, he looked around to see if any cops noticed them.

William backed off of Bunny, who was shaken by how William came at him. Bunny was definitely losing the fight, but he acted as though he did something. "Yeah, that's what I thought!"

William had already moved past it. He stood in the array of wooden fold chairs that looked as though a tornado ran through them. After tugging at his wool coat, he reached inside and took out a pocket watch. "Boys, it's time to get to it."

Out on a boat, the boys and some other associates went into international waters. They waited in the bitter cold for the larger boat to come in. When it finally arrived, they spent their night moving bottles from one boat to another. It was a treacherous job, one that you hoped to eventually rank out of.

They brought the boats to land, and in the night they brought the packed liquors to a wooded area. There, multiple trucks would be awaiting them. Some would take the liquor West, others would go as far North as Boston, and others brought the liquid gold along the southern East Coast.

William hopped into one of the south bound trucks. As they drove through the wooded area, they were stopped by a truck blocking the road. Men in masks hopped out, holding pistols toward the men. William grabbed his tommy gun, stepping out of the car and pointing it at the enemy.
