《Taking Over Me | Camille O'Connell》Chapter Four

Cami thought about Antoinette on her way to Rousseau's. She should have asked for her number, she thought, so they could talk again sometime. She liked the other woman, and thought maybe she'd like to be friends with her.

During her shift, Marcel showed up, which was exactly what she had been worrying about..

"Hey, you," he said, giving her a smile. "Slow afternoon?"

"Surprisingly, yes," she answered. "So, what brings you by?"

"I wanted to see you, of course. I was kinda hoping I could convince you to go out to dinner with me sometime this week."

Cami's smile disappeared. "Marcel...that's kind of what I wanted you to talk about. No, let me speak," she said when he opened his mouth to say something else. "I like you, and I like being friends with you. But I can't go out with you, and I can't be your girlfriend. I'm sorry, but...I just don't think it'll work out for us."

Marcel stared down at the bar, tapping on the counter. "Wow. Well, this is awkward, then. Um, I guess I should probably go, then." He turned to leave, but stopped. "This is probably terrible of me to ask, but I feel like I need to ask it, anyway. Have you decided you want to just be friends because of Klaus?"

Cami shook her head. "No. He and I are just friends, too."

Marcel nodded. "All right, then. I get it."

What Cami said was true. She really didn't have any romantic feelings for Klaus.

~~~~~~
Antoinette knew that something wasn't right the moment Marcel entered the apartment.
"What is it?" she asked him.
"It's Cami," he said. "I was going to ask her to dinner, and then she told me she just wants to be friends."
She raised her eyebrows. "Really? Handsome, charming man like you? Did you do something to put her off?"
"No. At least I don't think so. I actually asked her if it was because of Klaus, and she said no."
"Well, that's good to know, isn't it?" Antoinette asked.
"Not really. She could still end up having feelings for him. And Klaus, who knows-"
"Can you give me Cami's phone number?" Antoinette suddenly asked.
Marcel raised his eyebrows. "You want Cami's phone number?"
"Yes. Do you have it?"
"Yeah, I do, but why-"
"Would you please just give it to me?" she cut in.
"All right. Look, this is it, all right? I didn't think you and Cami were friends."
"I don't think we are yet."
~~~~~~

Antoinette went to her room and dialed the number Marcel had given her. When she heard "Hello?" on the other side, she said, "Cami? It's Antoinette."

"Antoinette?" Cami sounded surprised. "How did you get my number?"

"I asked Marcel to give it to me."

"Oh." There was a short pause. "Um, do you mind if I ask why?"

"I wanted to talk to you," Antoinette said, "Which is a little unusual for me. I'm sort of what you'd call antisocial. Um, anyway, Marcel told me you've officially put him in the friend zone."

"Yeah, I did. Look, I don't know if he believed it, but it doesn't have anything to do with Klaus Mikaelson. I'm not dating him, and I have no plans to."

"If you'd said it to me, I think I would have believed you. You seem like an honest person to me."

There was another pause, as neither one was sure what to say next.

"Can I have your phone number?" Cami asked. "You know, just in case of anything."

"Of course."

"And do you want to meet up sometime? Maybe get a coffee? I'd like to just...talk."

Antoinette nodded, even though she knew Cami couldn't see her. "I'd like that."

When she'd gotten off the phone with Cami, Antoinette walked over to the window and looked down at the street, at all the cars driving by. She hadn't been in a car since the night she became a vampire, and she had no plans to get in one anytime soon.

What she had said was true. She was antisocial. She stayed in her apartment and hardly ever associated with anyone. So, what was it about Cami, then? Why did she suddenly feel the need to talk to this woman?

Unless something inside of her was changing.
