Exact descriptions of kirin vary, but these chimeric creatures are often said to have deer like bodies, one or two horns or antlers, dragon-like scales, and an ox's tail. They somewhat resemble unicorns. They are extremely rare and are said to only appear in times of world peace or as a good omen signaling the birth or reign of an especially benevolent ruler.

The kirin is a noble, pacifistic creature who avoids doing harm to any living creature, even insects. However, they will fight back if threatened and have a strong sense of justice that makes them willing to seek out and punish evildoers. They are widely considered one of the strongest creatures in Japanese folklore with powers including fire breathing, flight (despite their lack of wings), the ability to walk on water, and the ability to bring good fortune wherever they go.

FUN FACT: The concept of the Kirin originated in China where it is known as the quilin and is viewed as the third strongest mythical creature behind dragons and phoenixes.

It is thought that kirin's were originally conceived by people who saw and did not recognize giraffes because of their scale-like patterns, gentle nature, the knobs on their heads, and their gentle nature.

Examples in various media:

Ki-rin (Dungeons and Dragons)

Kirin (Monster Hunter)

Kirin and Nirik (My Little Pony: Friendship as Magic) In this series, Kirin turn into aggressive, fiery creatures known as nirik when they get angry.
