(Author's Note...) Okay, so I know I haven't been very active. I get maybe a little distracted by other things, but now that I'm in a state where I'm like "gee whiz, I have no idea what to write rn", I have decided to write here! People surprisingly still read this, so might as well keep updating this when I can. I hope the lovely Prince Artemis is what you guys want.

Some time before Luna/Artemis was sent to the moon. You'll be an alicorn here just in case you guys want a part 2 to this cuz I do have a few ideas for that 👀

nothing but lots of angst with no resolved ending tbh :')

"Shhh," I giggled as we galloped through the halls of the castle. This wing of the castle where the princes resided was practically empty except for Prince Solaris who was fast asleep so deep into the night. The only things filling the halls were our hoofsteps and the glimmering moonlight that had streamed through the windows.

Artemis opened the doors to his room that were definitely much too big for a simple bedroom. If you weren't used to the extravagance of the Canterlot Castle, you'd think you were taking a grand entrance into a dazzling ballroom. Not to take away from the elegance of Artemis' room, though. His room was anything but small, and was adorned in some of the most expensive materials. It fit his lunar aesthetic, and was rather cozy. I assumed most of the blankets and pillows that adorned his bed and chairs were purchased by him. I was actually able to recognize a few from when I was there while he had bought it on a whim. Usually his reasonings were that it would match his room nicely or it looked just too cozy to pass up.

As we stepped into his bedroom, our pace had slowed to walk. We walked onto the balcony of his room that had a perfect view of the moon in all of it's glory. Artemis sent me a daring glance then spread his wings. In a single flap, he was in the air. "You coming?" He called out.

I nodded then flew up with him. This new angle combined with the unfiltered moonlight made Artemis look like a god. I suppose some looked up to him like that, but I knew him as a shy, kindhearted soul.

Artemis let out a laugh of utter joy. "The breeze feels amazing!"

He was right. The breeze blowing through my mane and gliding along the feathers of my wings felt so nice. Everything below us was dark except a few lampposts. It felt like it was just us in the world for the time being. Even if I knew I'd have to go back to my royal duties by the morning, it was nice to pretend.

"I wish we could just escape together. We wouldn't have to worry about royalty. We could spend time doing whatever we wanted." Artemis paused for a moment, wearing a sad smile for what he was about to say. "We could be together..."

Hearing him say that broke my heart. I acknowledged the situation multiple times, but every time I heard it from his voice, it reminded me of what was ahead once more. The only reason I was here visiting the Canterlot castle was because I was engaged to Prince Solaris. I didn't choose this fate. It was an arranged marriage that's been set in stone for years. I know Solaris is an amazing stallion, and I've truly tried to fall in love with him. Instead, I found myself entranced by Artemis.

I frowned slightly, "I know, but we have all of Equestria to serve and rule. Even if we did escape, where would we go? We'd have such a high bounty on our heads that nowhere could be safe."

"I know." Artemis sighed. I felt sorry to see him in this state. Knowing he was in pain hurt me just as much. I didn't want the only time we had together to go to waste, so I nuzzled my cheek up to his. We flew up onto a big, fluffy cloud which looked comfortable enough to cuddle in.

This moment was only temporary, but that didn't matter. Feeling his warmth radiating onto me while the cool breeze pushed past us was all I needed.

"My princess, you look gorgeous." I heard a deep voice from behind me that I came to memorize as Prince Solaris. I turned around, seeing his own attire for the ball today. It was a suit that was nicely tailored to his build with a few badges as a sign of wisdom and rank.

"Thank you." I smiled up at him. Seen as I'd be accompanying him for the night, my own dress had to be just as elegant. It was a ball gown that had the tiniest gems attached one at a time. It was safe to say that this is an expensive dress, but Solaris had insisted on getting it for me. He said it'd be perfect if we wore coordinating outfits to the ball.

"The guests will arrive soon, my dear." Solaris informed me. I simply nodded then followed beside him as we made our way to the ballroom. It was mostly empty except for a few servants who were making sure everything was at it's best. My eyes were soon drawn to a bored Artemis who was sitting on his throne. It was smaller than Solaris', but still quite grand.

Artemis seemed to have picked up our presence. He almost scowled when his eyes met Solaris', though it was quickly replaced with a small smile when he saw me. I could see the disdain he had for his older brother. It was quite obvious when you at least bother to look at the colt. Most, however, didn't. Most were too caught up in that prideful spell that Solaris exuded.

"Hello, brother." Artemis said in a rather bittersweet tone. I could tell he was holding back the venom that was just urging to come out.

"Artemis." Solaris made a nod then continued on with a harsh tone, "A bit of a smile would help. We don't want to scare off the guests, do we?"

Once we were settled at the top of the stairs, it seemed like the doors opened immediately. The trumpets sounded and the party had begun!

Many were quick to come see the sun prince, but none seemed as interested in I, let alone Artemis. I backed up a little and found Artemis' eyes focused on me. "What're you staring at?" I teased.

"Just the most beautiful mare in the castle." He smirked.

I felt my cheeks warm up at this, but continued on. "This is getting rather tiring, huh?"

Artemis rolled his eyes playfully, "Yeah. It's just another ball where everyone just swoons over their beloved Prince Solaris."

I opened my mouth to speak, but Solaris had beat me to it. "Come, my dear. I need you by my side for my greeting."

I nodded and stepped back up. Solaris smiled then looked upon his subjects. "Thank you all for coming to the ball," Solaris said in his traditional royal voice. I soon drowned out his voice with my own thoughts, though. Especially the overwhelming feeling of darkness shrouding my heart. This pain wasn't necessarily my own. It felt familiar as if it had always been lingering on the sidelines, but now it was overwhelming me. I did my best to push through this mysterious darkness, but it was taking up my energy.

Within an hour or so, this darkness felt unbearably painful and uncomfortable. With all this energy being drained from me just to simply hold off this shadowy feeling, I was beginning to feel faint. "Solaris," I touched my hoof to him, "I'm not feeling well. I think I should go to bed."

Solaris frowned, but agreed. "You go get some rest, my dear."

I was thankful for his understanding, but just the mention of the words my dear had intensified the darkness.

"Artemis, take the princess to her quarters, will you? She isn't feeling well." Solaris looked over to his young brother.

Suddenly, with those words, the darkness had subsided. Whatever this thing was, it was linked to the real world. I hadn't figured out how, I was too tired to do that just yet. I made a note in my head to attempt to put together the pieces once I was more awake. For now, I'd have to settle with getting some much needed rest.

Artemis guided me through the halls, pressing his own body against mine as some kind of support. "Are you okay?" He asked in a low voice, hesitant to break the silence.

"Yes, thank you." I smiled, "I'm just feeling a little weak. A good night's rest should make me feel better." I was hoping my words would relieve any worry that had settled on his mind. It was hard to tell if it worked, though.

When we finally reached the guest room I was staying in, we bid our goodbyes. I leaned over to nuzzle my cheek against his. He was hesitant and stiff at first. Soon enough, he relaxed against me. I relished in his warmth. "Goodnight, Artemis." I whispered before backing away from him.

"Goodnight, my love." He breathed out.

I walked into my room, closing the door behind me. Part of me wished I could ask him to stay with me. I longed for his presence. I wanted to be with him throughout the nights, even if it was just to know everything was okay. Everything I wanted from him was restricted from my touch. And, so I kept my hopeless wishes away from everything but my own thoughts.

I carefully took off every piece of fabric and jewelry that gently draped off my body. With no hesitation, I laid down on my bed that was much too big for one pony. It felt nice, though. I finally let myself slip away into a peaceful slumber.

There was Artemis, basking in the moonlight. He looked gorgeous with the wind flowing through his mane ever so slightly. It was nice to just watch how elegant he looked. The temptation to step closer, get a better view of him, was much too strong to resist. I softly stepped onto the plush grass, wary not to disrupt the silence. It was all so peaceful that I couldn't bring myself to ruin the atmosphere.

Another step onto the grass, and the once glimmering moonlight had dissipated into darkness. I flinched back. What was happening? What happened to the moon? My attention was quickly pulled to a large shadowy figure. It wasn't a pony. Not from what I could tell. It was dangerously close to Artemis.

"Artemis!" I called out, but he didn't even make a single move. It was like he couldn't hear me.

The shadowy figure moved closer until it was barely a few inches away from Artemis. Instead of fighting against it, he just lowered his head in submission. He slowly walked into the shadow that eagerly consumed him. What was he doing?! I galloped towards him, ready to pull him back and fight away whatever that thing was.

My eyes shot open as I gasped. I looked out the window. The sun was already up. I must've been much more tired than I thought to have woken up so late in the day. I was quick to brush that thought away as I remembered my dream. Well, more like a nightmare. I knew it was just all my imagination playing tricks on me, but still rushed to find Artemis. To make sure he was okay.

I rustled out of bed and flapped my wings as I burst out my room. I flew as fast as my wings could take me. I was a panting mess when I got there, but from what I could tell, he wasn't anywhere to be seen. The only thing I could see were the doors to the balcony swung open. Was he out there? I didn't take a second thought, and flew out into the skies just like we had once done.

My ears flicked to the side when I heard the sound of wings flapping through the air. When I looked, I found Artemis flying with anger that had been hidden for much too long. "Artemis!" I yelled out. This time, unlike my dream, Artemis listened. He turned back, and flew to meet me. "Are you okay?"

I searched his eyes for the familiar kindness, but all I found was... Darkness... He wasn't himself. He was only a shell of himself as he slowly lost his sanity. "Of course I am." He laughed, "Once I'm done with this, we'll be together finally!"

"What do you mean...?" I asked, scared to hear the answer.

"I'm taking Equestria, of course! I'm done with everypony giving all their love to Solaris! What about me?! I work just as hard to bring the night upon everyone, and no one appreciates it!" The anger in his voice was overwhelming. His crazed expression didn't help either. He was serious about this.

"Artemis," I began trying to reason with him, "Please think about this before you regret it. Whatever you're planning, it doesn't have to come to this!"

His smile dropped. "You don't believe me, do you?"

"That's not it. I just-"

"No, no! Just wait!" Artemis laughed, "Here! You'll get a front row view of my victory!" In an instant, I was teleported to the throne room. At the top of the stairs was Artemis. He swerved around his own throne. "Not another step!" He snarled.

I looked to where his gaze was directed, and there was Prince Solaris. Oh, please don't let this happen... I attempted to fly my way towards Artemis, urge him not to proceed with his plans, but I soon realized my leg was chained up with some sort of cuff of magic. I recognized it's hue as Artemis' magic, and gave up.

"Did you really expect me to sit idly by while they also bask in your precious light?!" Artemis scowled, "There can only be one prince in Equestria! And, that prince will be me!" His voice grew deep and dark at his last words as he smashed his hooves against the floor. My eyes widened, following the cracks up the castle wall. The wall shattered, revealing the sunlight. I flinched at the sudden brightness, but it didn't last for long.

Artemis flew up, the moon following just behind him until it completely covered the sun. Only the brim of the moon glowed from the sun's final signs of fighting back the unexpected darkness. Artemis fell from his flight only to be picked up by the same shadowy figure I remembered from my dream. I watched it rise and glow until it was consumed by the darkness once more. When Artemis came out, well... That wasn't Artemis. That was something else completely unfamiliar to me.

His eyes transformed into a cat-like slit, and he made a maniacal laugh while his new found armor shimmered in the moonlight. He glanced down at me then smirked. His horn glowed with a beam of magic that completely shattered the statue of Solaris and, soon, the glass ceiling of the castle. I flinched as the debris came crashing down on the center of the floor.

My eyes darted to what was behind the fallen debris. Prince Solaris. He flew up, but Artemis was quick to aim his magic at him. Solaris flew back down to avoid the hit then spoke in a deep, saddened voice. "Artemis! I will not fight you. You must lower the moon! It is your duty!"

Artemis laughed and let out a scoff. "Artemis? I am not Artemis." The way he said his own name was laced with venom. "I am Nightterror Nebula! I have but one royal duty now... To destroy you!" His wings boosted him up slightly just before he shot another beam of magic.

Solaris dodged it once more, flying out of the room through the hole that Nightterror Nebula had created. I struggled against the cuff while the lunar stallion had flown up to meet his older brother. I could barely see what was going on except for some glances of blurred figures and the light of a royal blue magic. My own vision was beginning to blur as tears began to build up in my eyes. No matter how hard I tried, the cuff showed no sign of giving out. Not even blasting the cuff with my own magic had worked.

Solaris' cry in pain broke through the sky and was soon met with a thump on the ground. Solaris was struck out of the sky and back down to the throne room. He was still on the floor, and I was beginning to think my once beloved Artemis had done it. This thought was put away once I heard Solaris grunt. He shakily lifted himself back up before steadying himself.

"Oh, dear brother... I am sorry, but you have given me no choice!" Solaris' head turned to the floor behind him. His magic surrounded a section that was lifted then opened. Underneath was some sort of stone structure that I couldn't quite place my hoof on what it was. Surrounding the stone orb were five gems of varying colors. Solaris flew up and took out a sixth gem in the shape of a star. It wasn't until now that it had struck me as to what his intent was.

I struggled more and more as the gems swirled around Solaris. With all my strength, I shot at the cuff until it finally broke. I darted up into the air to find Solaris glowing with a bright light. "Please no!" I pleaded with tears streaming down my face, "Don't hurt him! I can help! Artemis, please just listen!"

Neither of the brothers listened. Nightterror pushed me onto a cloud, knocking the breath out of me. They blasted magic at each other, and all I could do was watch their contrasting powers battling for dominance. I almost believed that the dark stallion was nearing his victory. It was a foolish belief. The luminescent magic from Solaris had won the fight in a heartbeat. I could see the panic in Nightterror's face. For a moment, he looked like my dear Artemis.

"No!" Nightteror cried as he slowly dissipated away. The beam of magic pushed against his body all the way to the moon.

"No! Artemis!" I screamed out into the sky. My tears were going down non-stop as the moon took on the spots of a stallion. Was he in there? Was he... Gone?

I glided down to the floor and sobbed. My beloved Artemis was gone... Everything that had conspired to now had resulted in the opposite of what Artemis had hoped for. What we hoped for.

"We could've been together forever..."

So that was a ride. I hope I did the concept justice. I have some plans for a part 2 if you guys want some kind of resolution. It'll be much more romantic and redeeming for our dear Artemis. So, if you guys want that, just let me know.

Keep giving me ideas, and I'll consider writing them. See ya later <3
