《The Berlin Wall》Chapter 37 - Lukas

Although there had been no official funeral, we had all decided to create one on this day.

1st August 1990

It had been a long time coming, but it had finally arrived. I just wish that Kirsten could have seen this.

I stared at the space in front of me, the blank empty space. No wall, no barbed wire, no guards, no nothing. It was just empty. Well. It hadn't been empty the last few months. Crowds of people had gone in their cars or climbed over the wall or rushed out when it had been taken down. Little children in the West stood with banners saying "wilkommen" and everyone you met welcomed you to the West as well. It had been magical.

But now I stood back in the East, staring at the empty space where Kirsten had died.

I looked up briefly, catching the eyes of Friedrich as he stood across the road, a little girl clutching his hand and smiling gleefully to herself, admiration filling her eyes as she watched him. He was no longer in his uniform. He was in black trousers and a navy shirt, the top few buttons undone, casual clothes I noticed. He glanced down to the spot where the flowers lay at my feet, closed his eyes for a moment and then looked back to me. I resented him, but he had lost just as much as I had which you could see from the pain whirling around in his eyes, almost spilling out. We both hated the system for that and therefore had a common enemy. I nodded towards him, and he nodded back.

"It's all over now Kirsten. Goodbye darlin'." I closed my eyes, letting the lonely tear flow down my cheek, splashing onto the flowers at my feet, before walking away.
