《The Berlin Wall》Chapter 18

Whistling.

It sounded almost like a bird tweeting, trying to find it's family or friends, but also more like a group of birds, or a marching band as it echoed throughout the tunnel, bouncing off each of the curved walls like a spring. I couldn't imagine a guard with a gun glued to his hands whistling so beautifully. But then again, not all guards were like Caesar. Some of them were more like young gentlemen or children.

Squeasing my eyes shut for a moment, I brought my focus back to our situation, rather than the whistling. Sven's hands were still clenched over my mouth and my waist, his palms becoming slightly sweaty over my mouth and his musky scent burning my nostrils. As I breathed in and out, my ribs crushed against his forearm, allowing me near to minimal breathing space. I could feel his heart beat pumping against my back, and although he may be putting on a brave and arrogant exterior, I could feel his heart pumping faster and faster as the whistly came closer and closer; he was panicking. He was stuck down here, because he couldn't let himself trust someone, not being able to move in case the guard heard, but he had to move because if he didn't, the guard would see the hole, and then us. And of all people, he was stuck with the person he couldn't trust; me.

"You better hope I never see you again, because if I do, I'm finishing this off." He whispered harshly down my ear, feeling like a tiny creature was crawling into my head and stabbing my brain. He inhaled deeply and then threw me to the side, colliding with the wall beside me, my head pounding and my vision blurring as if the creature was shaking my head around and around, but I managed to catch the last glimpse of Sven running for the ladder and then up it like some sort of spider himself. Pressing my hand to my head, I then froze, coming to the deathly realisation.

Sven hadn't moved before to make sure the guard didn't hear him.

Sven had spoken to me and then ran. He ran.

I tilted my head slightly, to look out of the hole. It was still to dark to see anything but I didn't need to. I heard what I needed. The whistling. It had stopped.

My hands pulled me up the wall to a steady stand, my head still dizzy but I could see the three ladders clearly enough. I had wanted to go to the furthest one away, just to be the furthest away, but I would need to go for the first one to even stand a chance. That would mean that I would be closer to the guard once he turned round the corner. Now, run or walk.

Run my head said, Run as if your life depends on it. Oh wait. It does.

So I ran.

I clung to the metal bars of the ladder, the cold and dampness of them sending more chills down my spine.

"FREEZE!" A scream echoed through the tunnel we were in, just as I pushed the port hole lid up and looked out. He couldn't see my face, that was good. He wouldn't be able to search for me again. If I could pull this off, that is. "Decend from the ladder. Slowly." I stayed put, I wasn't moving. "Now, or I will shoot."

I gave out a small chuckle. I don't know what I was thinking, my head had gone mad.

"You're going to shoot me anyway." I called back as I launched myself up the rest of the ladder and out of the hole. A loud noise rattled the area but I couldn't stop, I needed to keep moving, I was out of the tunnels, I was on the other side, I had ten tonnes of adrenaline pumping through my veins and I could run forever. I began running down a small alleyway and then I doubled over, falling straight down onto the floor as a spasm of pain shot through from my ankle all the way through my body to my head and back. I cried out and looked down to my hands cluching my leg, blood dyeing my trousers and painting the ground red.
