《RELINQUISH》Chapter 28

I arrived in front of the only internet cafe across the alley.
After Sion came, I took him in, where there weren't many people in the building. I checked the characteristics of each person, compared to what Riksan once said.
The first floor is clean… So I went up to the second floor.
It’s just a few steps up the stairs, that's where I saw tall, pale-skinned, nearly bald hair. Lucky me, this man was wearing an army-style t-shirt and pants, shouting in front of the screen, cursing the children he was playing against in some kind of online game.
“That's him! He's a six-soul strength carrier!” Elis did a good job, having said that.
Without even thinking, I kicked his metal chair until it shattered and it was thrown downstairs. strangling his neck with all the strength I had, I carried him out the back door.
First, I kicked him until he bounced away against a wall in such a quiet and empty space.
Then I looked around the place, especially the corners of each building. For some reason I suddenly became paranoid about the existence of CCTV.
But I better play it safe though…
“Take out your sword.” I give him a simple command.
“Daniel? What are you doing?” Sion, who had been following me all the time, finally started to complain.
“What's your problem, you fucking moron?!”
“Shut up and just take out your sword.”
“You think you're strong, huh? You have no idea who you're talking to! You think I've never killed before, kiddo? Son of a bitch?!”
“You want to kill some more? Then come here.”
“Daniel, don't listen to him... But you don't provoke him either!”
“Sion, leave this guy to me. You back off for a bit. I'll get this over with quickly.”
“Daniel!”
The big guy ran as he swung his sword. When he was no more than two meters from my position, I slashed both his hands gently until it cut off without him even noticing my every move. Swinging my sword a few times as a cooling for myself, the bloodstains spread out into a pattern on the ground.
He fell down, being unable to get up without the help of his hands which were now lying quite a distance from himself.
Idiot…
He was confused, while struggling away from me who was currently walking slowly towards him…
“The suspect had a total of six soul powers by the time we captured him.” I swung my sword which was still smoking because it had been sprayed with the blood of its own victim.
“He was trying to escape, and the strength-bearing bracelet wasn't very useful due to the sheer number of souls for someone just like him.” I stopped the tip of this sword right beside his two remaining legs.
“We can't hold the suspect much longer, so there's only one option left…” I slashed the two thighs apart from each other.
Now he had nothing else to escape…
“Daniel… Bro... Now you really freak me out, man…”
“It's okay... Look... All the wounds are no longer bleeding. Its regeneration works optimally for carriers who already have six souls inside of them. So, Sion. What time is it?”
“Two… I mean two past forty.”
“For me that's enough... Can you wait here until three, then give Ellie a photo of this place for her to come pick you two up?” I walked purposefully overstepping that guy without a single limb left.

“Where are you going?” Asked Sion.
“To thank my informant.”
~~~~~
“Hi hi… Riksan… You okay there, buddy?”
This place suddenly became very empty…
“Where are all of your friends?”
“Well, they left me Daniel. This is a common thing to happen though.” His face was pale from the pain in one of his legs.
“Are you okay? Should I remove that metal thing from your leg?”
“Ah… Yes! Yes please…”
Damn, I'm already getting tired of always pretending to smile like this…
So I released him from the restraints.
Then I threw the thingy to the limit of strength that I currently had, destroying the wall that stood firmly beside both of us in order to release all the emotions that I had been holding back for such a long time…
It's time for me to stop smiling valiantly like my sister.
Here, I will leave all the memories of her… And step forward without carrying that stupid pain in my heart anymore.
That's why I care no more about what kind of expression that I'm showing to this man right now, which for some reason managed to make him tremble, almost crying.
“Daniel… I’m Sorry…” Every word he had, stuttered from fright.
Looks like I've gone too far, huh?
Maybe if I pat his head, he'd be a little calmer, right?
Petted once…
Twice…
“Thank you for your cooperation. You're right about that guy's location... I've even caught him, ya know? I slashed both of his legs and arms until they were severed only by myself… Weak. He's too weak… But it doesn't matter. It's all done now. Once again, thank you very much, big bro Riksan.”
The man nodded enthusiastically…
Slightly curious, I moved his head and neck at will.
Aw... There are some hickeys!
“Wow, so you often play with a lot of girls huh?”
No answer?
“Is it good though? Loved by lots of girls? As for me, I guess I'm just too much of a nerd? Or for myself, I think that I’m just a little too sensitive to things related to this… Such a lust. Because, ya know? I was raised with hate. I don't really care about feelings of love, because I wasn't taught to do that either. At least, I learned to be a man who can stand the beatings of my own father... I learned not to ask anyone anything from my mother... I was taught to sacrifice myself for the sake of others from both of my parents.”
I don't know where my eyes are currently daydreaming while remembering the past…
“But then I learned how to smile from Saskia… Yes, that girl. You know her, right? I learned to keep loving my own life from her. I learned not to hurt myself, to wipe my own tears, to remove all the wounds by hugging the people we really care the most... I learned to be a human being from one of those things that are of no value to you at all.”
Riksan shook his head in reply.
“Okay. Now… Try to answer these two questions of mine, human.” I sat casually right in front of him while asking. “First, how many people are you currently in love with?”
I waved my hand, meaning to say it was his turn to speak, but then he just shook his head again... So I asked him for the second time.
He said, “No one... No one but Saskia…”
“Once again you spout nonsense like that just now, I'll take one of your fingers.”
“No one then. I swear…”
“Okay... Good... Now for the second question, how many people out there are in love with you right now?”
“What?”
“Actually... I don't really like repeating any questions.”
“Listen Daniel. I'm really very sorry, but I also couldn't do anything at that time... This all happened against anyone's will…”
“After I tortured you in a minute, you're going to blame my sister, aren’t you? What if I told you, whatever that will happen in a moment with that face of yours is beyond anyone's will... Will you forgive my sister for that one?”
“Little bro… So you can't really trust me there, can you? Of course I will never blame her! Keep my word, but I will never ever put the blame on anyone but that killer! We have the same enemy... That fucker! Whatever happens…” Before he finished saying the ruse, I kicked him until his back hit the wall pretty hard.
“Will you forgive my sister?”
Riksan didn't answer other than just crying.
“Why can't you answer? Are you a pig, a dog or something? Will you fucking forgive my sister!? Answer me, you maggot fuck!”
“Yes! Daniel… I will forgive her…”
He shouted with more and more tears in his eyes.
“Keep your word, okay?” I walked slowly to start the torture.
“No! Wait!”
“Even until the suffering comes, you scum will always lie for your own pleasure, won't you?”
“Daniel?! You're just kidding, right?! Okay! Sorry! Really! This time I'm serious!”
“You've been pitied too much by everyone who loves you... Those people who have already suffered, have swallowed too much of your own bullshit... You are too confident that you will always be forgiven just by recklessly lying until the second before the suffering slaps you on the cheek, aren’t you!?”
I pulled his stylish hair high until it hung, I pushed it against the wall until the skin was torn with blood, then I let him fall to the ground…
Holding back my strength, I give this guy’s face a punch.
“You!”
Second punch.
“Will forgive!”
Another punch.
“My sister!”
One last punch.
“Say it... Say the word again! Just fucking say it!"
I pressed his head against the rocky ground.
No kidding, but my heart beats even faster, the longer I hear his screams of agony.
“Where did all that bullshit of yours go huh? Why are you even crying? Say that bullshit again! Say it, goddammit!”
He cried out loud just like a weak human baby…
I also cried remembering the past…
Damn, I can't hold it in…
“Why… Just why... Why’d you have to kill her?” A soft tone full of sorrow of mine.
~~~~~
After I knelt here for a few minutes, hearing the screams from this disgusting man, I then steeled myself… Remembering all the things that had made me this way, remembering all the things my sister had taught me... It's about the time I put an end to this shit that has been running around my head for more than two months…
I should be satisfied with the results I have achieved…
I was hoping to be so. Although it doesn't feel like it at all, but this has indeed become all that I can do for myself…
It's time to throw this emotion away for good. Gathering it up at one point, my anger rises to the limit. With a fist high up towards the sky, I looked at this pigman's scarred face…
“You monster…” I was stunned by his words just now.
“Then what are you?!”
A punch of mine shook violently, exploded just below the ground... This psychic force managed to create a pattern of cracks all over the surrounding asphalt, many concrete fences toppled over, billowing dust and sand filling around. I admit, I was a little proud of my own ability to prevent that power from harming this man who just called me a monster.
Leaving him hugging the rubble and sinking a little into the cracks in the asphalt, I stood up straight without that one tough smile again…
I finally accepted life…
Standing from all but the help of my sister's smile left as a mask...
Ehm…
Well, at least I will use my own smile.
“So you don’t have to worry, Elis… It's not that I'm going to be such a gloomy person... I'm just going to use my own smile from now on... Using my own way of accepting this whole reality. But I'm sure you’ll also understand about it even without me telling you so, right?”
“I know…” She said that with her smaller form flying right in front of my face. “Your smile looks even warmer now, Daniel...”
“Thanks…” I laugh with satisfaction for the first time ever.
Then it all ends and starts from here…
Again…
~~~~~
“Niel…”
From one part of the many crowds surrounding this place just completely like a fighting arena, Ellie looked at me with pitying eyes…
“I'm sorry, Daniel. but Evelin really wanted to see you…” Though I didn't tell Sion to stop Ellie from seeing me... It seems this guy is actually quite sensitive to everyone's feelings.
So I just shook my head, indicating that everything was fine.
“You okay?”
Ellie tilted her head to take a peek at the person lying right behind me.
“Um…” What do you want him to say, Ellie? Is this girl blind?
“I mean you! Not him.”
“Who?”
“You, Niel!”
Still not convinced, I turned my body around, checking the condition of the man who had been completely ignored by the vessel of a goddess of forgiveness.
“Are you sure you're asking about my condition?”
“That person went through everything that he went through, completely because of his own fault, right? And also... You sure you want me to heal all of his... Ugh... No… I don’t even want to…”
“Ellie, you evil…”
Smiled in relief, after noticing that my condition was actually just fine, she turned to walk me along from the front.
“Well… In fact, it was indeed this girl who was supposed to have your own power, the authority of suffering... And if that really happened... I would actually be much more on the side of Riksan just for the sake of this girl's humanity alone.” Elis’ opinion makes so much sense.
“But Niel, you really have to explain about this one though… I mean, really...”
The three of us silently folded our arms while gazing at an unpleasant sight... A man with no arms and no legs, thrashing around on the ground while still trying to escape.
Except for Sion, who now turned around to vomit.
8 81The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
