《Sons of God, Daughters of Men》Chapter 9

"Did you think we wouldn't find you, Alex?" The voice echoes in the dark, empty house. All the windows are covered with blankets, and the only light comes from the fireplace and the many electronic devices that sit around the open room.
"How did you find me here?" Alex says, keeping his focus on his weights. The sweat glistens as it trickles down his forehead.
"Now did you really think we wouldn't put a track on you?" Garrett says as he walks carefully around the room, hands in his pockets.
"Tracks don't work here." He stands from the weight bench and throws the weights to the floor just below Garrett’s feet. He doesn’t flinch. He only smiles and looks at Alex.
"Not a tracking device dumbass. A track. Me. You realize you aren't too far from home."
"Is that what you are now? Mom and dad would be so proud." He grabs the liquor bottle and gulps a shot.
Garrett stands tall, dark, and dresses in a suit. "I have been here for quite a while now actually, watching you. I've done some research." He pauses. "They aren't pleased with you, you know. The only reason you are still here is that our father was an Elder." He picks up one of the devices and looks it over for a few moments. "You have a new objective, one I think you have already been working on. Gain her trust and get in. Find her secrets. If you don't, I will. She's not protected here, and I've already had many opportunities.” He grabs the bottle from Alex’s hands and chugs the rest of the bottle. “I don't know why they trust you so much, but I sure as hell don't. I'll be watching you, and her." He tosses the empty bottle to Alex.

"I'll do the job; you can tell the Elders that. As for you, Garrett, get out of my house and get the fuck out of my territory. I’ve got this under control."
"I'll be watching you, brother. Don't fuck this up. We don’t have time." Garrett smiles and disappears through the back door into the dark.
Alex throws the liquor bottle across the room. It shatters as it slams into the door. He runs his hands through his hair as he paces the floor. He stops and picks up the phone. "Son of a bitch." He begins to dial.

Margrave's Divinity (Rewrite)
Power always comes with a price. Seventeen years ago, obsidian towers thousands of feet tall erupted from the earth near the world’s population centers. Strange magic accompanied their appearance—powerful and inexplicable abilities granted to lucky humans, called Embers for the burning in their eyes. Lyle isn’t lucky, though. When the recently-unemployed college dropout finally manages to get his hands on a Cinder, he is utterly disappointed to find that he will never be an Ember like his father or brother. Before he even has time to process his failure, a strange Ember shoves him through a tear in reality and into the cave of a dragon, where the titanic beast claims to be an ancient goddess of myth and legend. She has a gift for him, but it comes with a warning. War is coming. --- Posting Thursdays and Sundays at 8am Central. Confused about the rewrite? See my letter to previous readers here.
