《Bells and Taxes》The Cremorne

The place is the Cremorne, and how do I describe it? It’s the jewel of Auview Island, an entry-level Highland town the new money types like to move to. If you’re a member of a Named House or at least have a close relative that is you're treated like gold. If not, well…you're treated indifferently, to say the least. I love their food and am treated well because of who I have been there with and because I go so often, again, I like the food. The two Specials are excellent at their work, for surveillance one must undoubtedly seem to belong at the site, but also must be unremarkable enough to avoid excessive attention. Unfortunately at the Cremorne, this means my Specials are thrown into the indifferent treatment category. It’s another reason my assistance is necessary here.

House names and pseudos go there for one of three reasons. First, they may like the food and honestly do not care if they are on the patio or not. Or maybe they need some attention so they go there because the tabloidists are always there. Lastly, they’re with someone who wants the attention but must tell the other person that in advance and not just tell them it is because they like the food.

I like surveillance because one of my favorite things in the world to do is people watching. Due to my occupation, I get to people watch not only “regular” people, but also get to watch the drama of the Old Families, the Directory, the merchant princes, and the new money pretenders; all of it playing out in front of me on a daily basis. There’s a school of thought in our society where one has to be in front of the press every day to keep your name out there and to make yourself relatable, especially when you don’t have some current effort or improvement to promote. I can understand the logic of that and think it is ok to use the tabloidists for that and to create some drama to keep up exposure. After all, forgotten Houses can always face the block, or so they still think. Another school of thought is that if you are popular enough, or on a big enough roll, you do not need to attract the drama and therefore can lead an uneventful life until the next big thing you have to promote.

Then there’s the final school of thought which is that you have no works to promote and have done nothing of substance but you still manage to keep yourself in the esteem of the Commons by creating drama and keeping yourself in front of the press for as long as possible. I’m sure many would think of a certain Miss Cymbelline right now, but I would disagree. It is actually more like people who dated or had an affair with a big Old Family name, or some big public business dealing, and have no hopes of further advancement in their lives, but do whatever it takes to stay in the public eye.
