《Tales of the Underground - The Game》Chapter 5

The Corridor they entered soon turned out to be a labyrinth, made out of wooden boxes that reached to the ceiling. Every few steps a path split into two and promising corners suddenly became dead ends. The group was nervous and irritable, with an itchy trigger finger. Every moment they expected to get jumped by an unspeakable horror and become one of the Skinner's numerous victims. Suddenly McGill stopped and starred towards the ceiling. Someone had painted large letters on the stone, in white colour, easy to see.

"ALMOST THERE", was what it said.

They carried on. It took them some time to find the next message.

CLOSER.

Without realizing it, the group became faster.

EVEN CLOSER.

They turned around a corner and looked for a new message. Then they found it.

GOT YOU!

McGill screamed and a shotgun blast made their ears explode. Wither dropped his lantern and only saw McGill's silhouette kneeling on the ground. Then Frye raised her lantern and they saw what happened. McGill, cringing his teeth, trying not to scream, had his leg caught in a bear trap.

"Gus!"

"Hold on! We got you!"

"We have to open the trap."

Wither had to lean into the trap with all his weight to open it. Meanwhile Frye freed McGill's leg and used her jacket to stop the bleeding.

"How is it, Gus? Can you walk?"

"Bet yer arse I can! This bastard is gonna learn to not mess with a Scott!"

Slower this time, the group continued their way. Despite his colleagues protests, McGill

insisted on continuing and took the lead. The hourglass told them that they had little more

than thirteen minutes left. But just when the tension had reached its highest, McGill stopped

once more.

"Gus, what is it?", Frye asked.

"McGill?" Wither looked at the man. McGill didn't even seem to notice them, so Wither stood on his toes to look over McGill's shoulder.

"Bloody heresy..."

In front of them was a body. No, not a body. The skin of a body, standing upright like a stuffed animal. The eyes and mouth were closed and seemed almost peaceful. Wither stumbled back into Frye and struggled not to throw up. For the first time it hit him what a messed up place Swindon was. Before there were only reports and pictures. Yes, he had seen corpses before, people murdered because of jealousy or greed. But this was different. When he looked at this strangers face, all of humanity's darkest and most sadistic secrets looked right back at him.

Gus was the first to discover the key inside the victim's hands. The hands were prepared in front of the body in a gesture of offering.

"Let's...let's just head back. Anna, 'ow much time 'ave we?", Gus asked.

"Anna?"

Frye turned around. No one was behind her.

"Anna!"

On the ground, she discovered the hourglass. It had shattered when it was dropped.
