《The Three Lives of Mr. Amazing》The Second Life (Part Two)

Richard Ladd left Dr. Janus and the building hidden inside of an airforce base. Richard Ladd was given a whole history - birth certificate, high school graduation papers, family photos, and everything he would need for the next stage of his journey.
Dick Rollins had been 17 when he committed the triple murder, and 23 when he was executed, revived, and then had his memory erased. Richard Ladd who had emerged from the embers of Dick Rollins had spent the next year with Dr. Janus, recovering and then undergoing treatment - and now at aged 24 Richard Ladd was joining the Navy Seals.
Richard reported to the Seals training base at Coronado, California - and was enrolled as a candidate and joined the 24 week Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL program. Only 11% of the candidates who join the Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL course graduated, the first phase of becoming a Navy Seal. For Richard Ladd, the 24 week course may as well have been a vacation in sunny California. As the other candidates were going into hypothermia sitting in the surf of the Pacific ocean, Richard felt quite comfortable. As the other candidates struggled to keep up with the unrelenting physical tasks the instructors demanded of them, Richard felt no pressure at all. Dr. Janus had continued Richard’s treatment, and he had received another two injections in his spinal column before leaving and heading to California, and he was now truly superhuman. The biggest issue Richard faced was not showing his instructors exactly how easy all of their tasks were for him. Whilst the other candidates lay on their bunks exhausted and bruised and like they couldn’t possibly carry on, Richard would be feeling completely relaxed - and completely unaffected by the physical exertions.
On a couple of occasions, the instructors would pull Richard aside - and ask him if he thought the course was too easy for him? And he would lie, and say no - the course was challenging. The instructors would demand to see Richard’s feet. Whilst the other candidate’s feet were covered in sores and blisters, Richard’s feet looked like he had just returned from a pedicure and foot massage. The instructors were baffled - however much they berated Richard, however long they forced additional training tasks upon him - he never wilted or complained or even seemed bothered.
‘How you do it, Ladd?’ - said one of the instructors.
‘I guess I am just a bit tougher than the others, maybe - sir’ - said Richard.
The instructor smiled, and scratched his chin - ‘I've been training Seals here for nearly 15 years, and I went through this training myself before I joined the teams. I have seen every kind of tough mother fucker come through here over the years, Ladd - guys that could run ultra-marathons, and guys that could bench press 300 pounds. I've seen guys come through here that when they got in the shit on operations could stay awake for a week - but all of these guys when they came through here, when they did this course - it nearly damn killed them. It nearly damn killed them physically, and it sure as hell nearly killed them mentally. But you, you don’t even look like you are even slightly bothered by any of this shit. And why is that, Ladd?’

‘Like I said, sir - maybe I am just a bit tougher than the others, sir’
The instructor shook his head - ‘You know what we are going to call you, Ladd?’
‘I don’t know, sir’
‘We are going to call you Mr. Fucking Amazing’
And that name stuck. Richard Ladd graduated from the Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL program, and then went on to become a full member of the Seal teams, and his nickname traveled with him wherever he went - Mr. Fucking Amazing.
After graduating as a Seal, Richard joined the Teams and went on operations. All the time Richard Ladd, or Mr. Fucking Amazing, was being watched - watched by the CIA. The CIA had created the legend of Richard Ladd, and were now working on the legend of Mr. Amazing. Dr. Janus had made Mr. Amazing for the CIA, and now the CIA were getting ready to put their new tool to use.

The first the public ever heard of Richard Ladd, or Mr. Amazing - was an article that appeared in the Honolulu Star, the largest newspaper in the Hawaiian Islands. The article reported that a US Navy serviceman had played a round of golf at the Moanalua Golf Club, on the Big Island. A US Navy serviceman playing a round of golf whilst on leave in Hawaii was not the headline of the story, the headline of the story was that the serviceman had hit 18 holes-in-one, and carded a score of 18 for the round. The feat was observed by the caddy who had taken the group of servicemen around - as well as the others in the group, and others who were on the course at the time. Richard Ladd wasn’t named in the article, but the caddy was quoted as saying he was known as Mr. Amazing. Other newspapers picked up the article, and the chase was on to identify this mystery man who could hit 18 holes-in-one in a row.
A British tabloid managed to track Richard Ladd down to an apartment complex in Honolulu where he was staying, and they interviewed him. They asked if he could repeat the feat, and he said he probably could. The British tabloid arranged for Richard to play a round of golf, and they videoed the entire event. Richard replicated his amazing feat, and played another 18 holes with a carded score of 18. And then the world became aware of Richard Ladd, dubbed Mr. Amazing (the Fucking was dropped by the media).
Richard became a celebrity - and left active duty with the Seals. He played in demonstration basketball events, billed as Mr. Amazing Vs The NBA All Stars. Richard, alone, would take on the best of the NBA and beat them. Richard played a season in the MLB for the New York Yankees - and during that season he hit a homerun every time he was at plate, and pitched a perfect season, with zero hits or runs scored against him. Next it was the olympics, where he won gold medals in dozens of track and field events - becoming the most decorated Olympian in the history of sport. Richard won the Tour de France, climbed Mount Everest (without oxygen or any survival equipment), and conquered every other sport known to man.

Richard Ladd, or as he was now universally known, Mr. Amazing - was the most famous person in the world. A celebrity of epic proportions - who signed endorsement deals with brands and who was mobbed wherever he went. Mr. Amazing moved into the penthouse on the 102nd floor of what became known as Amazing Heights - and it was there he met with Dr. Janus, and the boys from the agency.
Murray Cucci had received a call, and was asked to book a meeting with Mr. Amazing. Dr. Janus arrived at the 102nd floor, and was met by Murray, who brought her to the conference room overlooking the New York skyline below. A short while later two men from the agency arrived, and they were taken to the conference room. Murray offered everyone drinks - but they all declined. They sat and waited for Mr. Amazing to arrive - Murray apologized, and tried to make a joke about how Mr. Amazing was always amazingly late. No one smiled.
Finally Mr. Amazing arrived - and stepped into the conference room and immediately saw Dr. Janus.
‘Hello Richard’ - said Dr. Janus
‘Dr. Janus - I didn't know that you were coming today. It is…it is so good to see you. How are you?’
“I wanted it to be a surprise, Richard’ - said Dr. Janus.
Richard sat down next to Murray - ‘Did you know about this?’ - he hissed.
Murray shrugged, unsure what to say.
‘Richard’ - said Dr. Janus - ‘This is Phil and Todd, from the agency’
Richard shifted his gaze to the two men sitting at the far end of the table - ‘The agency?’
‘CIA’ - said Todd, a middle aged and balding man with a thick waistline.
Phil lit a cigarette - he also was a middle aged man, but not balding and skinny - ‘The good Dr. Janus here made you for us, and now we want to start work on some projects we have sitting in the hopper’
Richard glanced back at Dr. Janus, but she wasn’t looking at him - she was looking at Todd and Phil.
‘Now the basic plan is, Rich, that we set you up with some great publicity pieces - heroic stuff’ - said Todd - ‘Saving hostages, that kinda stuff - but in the background, you take care of our projects for us’
‘What kind of projects?’ - said Richard, turning back to Phil and Todd.
‘Mostly negotiations’ - said Phil, smiling while puffing on his cigarette.
‘Hostile negotiations’ - added Todd, also smiling.
‘Nothing too complex, Rich’ - said Phil - ‘Sometimes we are involved in things, and we kinda hit a roadblock. The otherside doesn’t want to budge, and everything gets jammed up. We figure, Rich, that you can come along and grease he tracks - so to speak - and get things moving again’
‘I don’t know anything about negotiations…’ - said Richard, looking back to Dr. Janus.
‘They want you to kill people, Richard’ - said Dr. Janus - ‘But they are too polite to say it themselves’
Phil smiled - ‘Well there it is’
‘You know how to do that, don’t you!’ - said Murray, beaming - ‘Mr. Amazing was a Navy Seal’
‘Who do you want me to kill?’ - said Richard, turning back to Todd and Phil.
‘Well, where do we begin…’ - laughed Todd.
‘We will set things up - and let Murray know about everything’ - said Phil - ‘....and we will get you some heroic missions, public missions that gets your face in the newspapers and on TV’
‘Like a burning building - rescuing kids and that kinda stuff’ - said Todd.
‘That will be great for endorsements and sponsorship deals’ - said Murray, winking at Richard.
‘You will be a hero, Richard’ - said Dr. Janus - ‘and the boys from the agency get what they want’
Richard looked at Murray, and Murray nodded.
‘Okay - I will do it’ - said Richard.
