《Guardian Kayden》Episode 5 - Planet Varner

He woke up next to a pool of drool on his pillow. He groaned as he wiped the side of his face and rubbed the drool from his chin. He held the bottle of pills and looked at them. He sighed with relief and combed his hand through his bangs.
“I haven’t had such good sleep in months…” he said as he sat up from his bed.
“At least they work,” he remarked as he put them on his nightstand next to his retro, cordless earthling alarm clock. He brewed coffee in his kitchenette and poured himself a cup of a dark roasted blend, and sipped it slowly before sitting down in his pilot’s chair. He started to scroll through the names on his wanted list. He scrolled to the first orange name.
“Abel Nightwing: Sargasian sharpshooter who mutinied with his platoon and shot four officers in his unit before deserting with the loot from a civil war. Armed and dangerous, especially at long range,” Kayden read aloud as he sipped his coffee. Abel had nostrils on the sides of what would be considered his ‘normal’ nose and a third eye on his forehead; otherwise, he resembled a human’s anatomy other than his green skin. Kayden grabbed one of his pistols and put his coffee down, and looked down its sights as he aimed to the ground. The handle on the gun lit up red in the cartridge as he readied it, and then he disarmed the gun, put it next to his coffee, and approached his console.
“Planet Varner?” he asked as he scrolled through the file and found the location. He put in the coordinates, set his ship on course, went to his closet. He picked a black shirt, grabbed his leather holster straps, and put his guns on. Then he grabbed his sword hilt and placed it in the back of his holster on his back, then pulled a black leather jacket and put it on over his weapons to hide them. He tucked the sword hilt behind his back under his belt. Kayden tied his hair back in a half ponytail that just went past his shoulders. For having just one eye, he was fairly handsome. He put his finger on his forehead and traced it down to his nose, splitting his eyes in two. He maintained his stature but wanted to hide who he was from his enemy as he thought he’d be fighting a battle gauged on distance.

He went to his mini armory, which he noticed some new additions since he docked for repairs, and sighed. He could only think of the Captain doing it for him; he was the only one with the clearance to allow Kayden to have such weapons aboard his ship. His armory now included some higher-grade military weapons, including a rifle with an extended barrel. He picked up the rifle and looked down the scope at his console, then strapped it to his back and approached just as a beeping sound was heard, and he could see the planet from a distance. It was a brown sandy planet with little to no water features on its surface.
“I hate planets like Varner; you get sand everywhere,” he remarked as he shuddered and initiated the landing sequence on his ship. He headed into the atmosphere quickly, only slowing down once he entered the planet’s gravity field. He landed right in the middle of the desert, and he groaned as he did. He thought on his cover and quickly shrank down to seven feet tall, and grabbed an appropriately sized brown leather jacket that would better blend in with the sandy-colored soil and rocks. He exited his ship and cloaked it with a command on his wristband. He used a set of binoculars to scan the horizon, looking at the cliff side of the rock and the dunes, but he saw nothing.
“His last known affiliates are the Dusty Walkers gang…they’re around here somewhere,” he said to himself. He went walking in the desert for nearly two hours before he got to a town, and he found the watering hole and entered it. Kayden had disguised himself to look like a human so they wouldn’t be alarmed by seeing a Cyril. The majority of species didn’t know Cyril could disguise themselves or, to the fact of the matter, shapeshift completely into any species they wanted with a special item called a Cyrilin artifact. To maintain two eyes the easiest, though, they just needed a little trick to split their eyes that used a lot less concentration than relying purely on the artifact item. The trick could even give them three eyes. The artifacts the Cyril wore were powered by the mana that they naturally produced. Kayden’s primary fear was being discovered on Earth because his species was a goldmine of mana. But the Cyril could not use magic. However, they had superpowers and other inhuman traits that added to their benefit. He could create an electromagnetic field with his hands and had telepathy. Telepathic Cyril were renowned for getting in trouble overhearing their superiors’ plans or ideas and got written up for their lack of self-control. On the other hand, Kayden made sure to keep what he heard secret for his own sake and the sake of his peers and superiors. They knew that about him, and that was another reason he was well respected. He never told Felicia about his powers. He never wanted to scare her.

Tales of Ordinary, Completely Unremarkable Contractors
"Where life had no value, death, sometimes, had its price. That is why the mercenaries appeared." - Artur Xerxes, in A Century of Disappointment: Memoirs of a Travelling Dwarf It's never too difficult to land contracts for a set very specialised skills in a continent teeming with werewolves, vampires, giant leopards, undead and, god forbid, elves. The difficulty comes when these contractors find themselves suffocated in the dense atmosphere of this world's rigid - and mostly unfair - rules; death, suffering and misfortune await those unwilling to sacrifice to bend these in their favour. In this non-linear plot, you will observe a scarred and deformed farm girl cashing her first bounty posters, a seemingly ordinary barmaid at a tavern in the bustling centre of a sprawling, corrupt city and an enigmatic leader of a firm specialising in dealings any other would consider suicidal. Watch them all take everything to the next level at every available opportunity, and then feel dread at the thought that this still might not be enough to halt the physical embodiment of doom about to do what it does best Please, feel free to review and comment! Any sort of feedback can help me become a better writer and write more engaging stories for you. I used to update once every 3-5 days, but this rewrite is taking much too long...I do hope it will be worth it.
