The Wanderer's Journal, entry 2,669. Subject, Void.

First off, a disclaimer. Void has rightly never seen fit to bestow its power upon me. However, I have had several thousand years worth of observing. And while I may not be able to wield it, I believe my understanding is complete.

Now to the subject at hand. The most common misconception is that Void is sentient. It is not. It does have a will and to understand Void is to understand this will.

You see, Void seeks balance. Think of it like water on a green planet, always seeking level. In its efforts, it sometimes causes floods, tsunamis, and other catastrophes. But you must understand the power of the deep. When compared to that, these natural disasters are but a fraction of their power.

The greater mystery is not how it does such great damage, but how it does so little. The amount of restraint is matched only by the deepness of itself.

Forgive me for waxing poetic. Some have said it’s my worst best quality.

When Void seeks to rebalance the shifting flow of the universe, it coalesces its power into a living being, a soul. These are known as Void Souls.

(An interesting aside about Void Souls. Void does not necessarily grant any specific powers when it merges with a soul. Instead, it fills in what is believed about it. It can only be what it is perceived to be. Reality Breaker could not help but do just that. It was bound to happen from the first time she was called by that name. Arcana inherited assumed ethereal powers of energy manipulation because he was assumed to have said powers. All Mother, well, it should have been no surprise that she rallied her wayward kin to her herself, uniting them with familial bonds and ambition. Void Drifter. Well, she is a bit more tricky. You see, her name is more a title than a definition. She is the Drifting soul, but remember, it is not only what they are called, but also what they are believed to be. And in her case, you have not only what the Collective believes about her, but also what the Ascendancy believes. And, with the addition of her more recent family additions, you have to add what they believe about her. Never before has a Void soul been believed to be so many things.)

These Void Souls are the natural disasters I spoke of. They are price for rebalancing.
