《Another Death》Chapter 16 - Magical practice

"Oh man, it's time for the practice, i must give it my all" thought Andrej while the professor explained.
"Now, for a warm up, you will spar with someone who has the same magic as you, then i will teach you some advanced spells, one for each element" said the professor, and all of the students found their partners and started sparring, all except Andrej.
"Uh, sir, what do i do? I have nobody to spar with" said Andrej to the professor.
"Ah, you have dark magic right? That will be a problem, there is also nobody to teach you spells" the professor said.
"What? Why?"
"Then, you will practice full concentration with me" said the professor.
"Yes"
"Now, do you know about full concentration at all?"
"Yes, i know that you concentrate on all the mana you have, then manifest it all at once, which gives you a massive boost in power and speed, but it can leave you exhausted quickly" Andrej explaied to the best of his ability.
"Yes, that is correct, do you know perhaps how to do it?" asked the professor.
"Yes, but only with a sword and my right hand, let me demonstrate" said Andrej and then he took a stance with the sword in his right hand.
"Dark blade: Full concentration"
Andrej's entire hand and the blade turned into dark energy, before Andrej disspelled it.
"Good, i will try to teach you how to do it with your entire body, something like this"
"Water magic: Full concentration"
The professor's whole body became encassed in a light blue light, and mana radiated from his entire body, giving him an intimidating aura, before he disspelled it.
"Did you see that?"
"Yes, it was awesome!" said Andrej in awe.
"Now, tell me, when you do your full concentration, how do you concentrate?"
"Huh? Well, i just focus on my blade, and then on my hand which holds the blade" Andrej explained.
"I see, now, instead of focusing on just the hand holding the sword, try and focus on your entire body which is holding the sword instead"

"Okay, let me try" said Andrej and he gripped the sword tightly, then he focused on his entire body, and before he knew it, it felt like power started surging through his veins, and a black light shined from his entire body, before it quickly dissapeared.
"Wow, you actually did it on the first try, i never expected you to manage that" the professor said in awe.
"Really?" asked Andrej with excitement.
"Yes, now, what do you say we have a little spar, to increase your concentration time" offered the professor.
"Yes" Andrej said and took a stance with his sword, then the professor did the same.
"Water magic: Full concentration"
"Dark magic: Full concentration"
Andrej attacked first, raising his sword and slashing downwards, which the professor blocked with his bare left hand, then with his right hand the professor managed to push Andrej outwards.
Andrej fell on his feet and went to strike again, but instead he threw his sword at the professor, who was ready to block it, but then Andrej quickly caught to the still flying blade, and slashed which managed to hit the professor, but not leave a scratch or anything.
"Come on, try harder! The more you concentrate the stronger you get!" said the professor and took out his sword, then went to strike Andrej, who managed ti parry the strike, then they exchanged some slashed before Andrej managed to create some distance between them.
"Okay, i managed to keep up longer than with Oleg" thought Andrej. "Now then, let me try using a spell while in this mode" he gathered mana in his sword.
"Dark slash" the slash was wider and stronger and faster than the usual ones produced by Dark slash, but the professor was unamased.
"I will use only the basic spells"
"Double wave slash" two horizontal slashes oh water parried the slash of darkness, attacks negated each other.
"I must admit, you are better then i thought you will be"
"Thank you sir"

"Let's stop here, i must do the second part of the class now"
"Okay"
Then the professor called every student to the center of the backyard, and started explaining his lesson.
"Now then, what you know right now is just the beggining of magic, there are spells far stronger and stranger then you know, now, spells are ranked with five ranks: begginer rank, which you all know by now, intermediate rank, expert rank and master rank, there is also forbidden rank, which is only for spells which are considered forbidden knowledge, you will probably never encounter those spells in your life"
"What i will teach you today are intermediate ranked spells, now in order to cast those, you will need to chant the respective chants needed, then the name of the spell before it can take effect, however, you will quickly learn to use them without the chants, let me show you some spells, starting with fire"
"Finally, the hero will recieve a new power" said Mateja excitingly.
"Now, stand in a line and put your hands forward" the professor said and all the students complied.
"Now then, repeat after me"
"Oh, the allmighty dragon king, the son of the sun god, turn everything to ash, Dragon Roar" then a spiral of flames in the shape of a serpentine dragon shoot out of the student's hands, which incinerated the ground where the spell landed.
"Good, next we will do earth" all students with earth magic alligned in a line, and the professor started chanting.
"Mother earth, give me your divine hand, and pass judgement on the sinners, Golem Strike" the professor raised his hands, then four hands made out of earth rose above him, but the students managed to make only two each, then the professor lowered his hands, which made the hands strike the earth, generating a powerful shockwave in the process, the students did the same, but their strikes were not as strong.
"Okay, now let's do wind"
Anya and Mateja went to Andrej together and started bragging about their new spells.
"This was awesome! Did you look at my earth hands??" said Anya excited.
"It was cool, but nowere near my awesome, heroic spell" Mateja said with pride.
"You both are amazing" said Andrej "Too bad i won't be able to learn with the professor"
"Why" asked both of them at the same time.
"He said he couldn't teach me, maybe his attribute is light" answered Andrej.
"Wait, we need to clean the classrooms as punishment" said Anya.
"Shit, you are right" all three of them ran towards the classroom they were supposed to clean first, where they saw Katarina waiting in front of the door.
"Hey guys, how are you?" Katarina asked.
"We're good, just had our first practice" said Andrej.
"This hero has learned a awesome new spell" added Mateja still beaming with pride.
"I see" said Katarina.
"Where is Ivan?" asked Andrej.
"I don't know" replied Katarina.
"Ugh, now he is the one who is late" said Anya annoyingly.
"The hero must not be late" said Mateja, while Andrej and Anya looked at him, remembering the door kicking incident, before noticing that water was dripping from their heads, then they looked up and saw Ivan, who was flying and spraying water from his cleaning cloth.
"Ivan" shouted Anya angrily, and Ivan descended.
"I hope you are not angry, it was a small joke"
"No.. everybody is angry and we all hate you" said Katarina.
"Same for you" Ivan retorted.
"So, will we get to cleaning already?" asked Andrej.
"Do you want more beer?" asked Ivan.
"I guees no"
"And i guess we will not work then" said Ivan and everybody laughed, they spent the entire day cleaning and laughing among themselves, until it was time for sleep.

The Infinite Labyrinth
(Story complete - Book 1 "Shanghaied", 2 "Shortcuts", 3 "Secrets" and 4 "Sanctions") It is the 19th century, and war smoulders between England and France. Any hope for a quick end to Napoleon's rampage across Europe ended when the Great Gates opened in 1800. For a fortunate few, the strange world of the Infinite Labyrinth offers opportunities, strange descriptors popping in their minds, informing them of growth, and status beyond that of a mere mortal. The materials and power crystal they bring back foster a new age, both military and civilian. Aether-powered Skyships prowl the skies, as all the great nations blessed by the Gates try to turn the blessings of the Labyrinth into immediate advantages. But for Jonas, an apprentice leatherworker, his friend Ira, and so many Londoners, the fabled ones that walk the Labyrinth are distant heroes, seen from afar. They fell short when their Potential was measured, and they fill their mundane lives with distant dreams. One man wants to break the stalemate. The Tyrant of the Dominion of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, has a plan. Eighteen years after the world changed, he will force it to change again. And when civilians are caught in the fallout, the unthinkable happens. Six people, unqualified, forbidden to ever enter the Labyrinth, find themselves stranded in a distant zone, forcefully turned into Professionals. They know little of what that means, but they have to figure out the rules that are now their lot, for they have little hope to escape their predicament otherwise. They need to understand what the descriptors in their minds mean, what each of the strange piece of gear waiting in treasure chests behind terrible guardians can bring them. They have to become Professionals on their own and rejoin the Empire. They will figure out their new lives one way or another. But will there be an Empire waiting for them when the Gates re-open? Caught in a clash of empires and high tiers, they will do what little they can. They will step up and do their best. One way or another. The Infinite Labyrinth is a slice-of-life litRPG adventure set in a real historical setting. It's a hard, crunchy litrpg. Expect blue boxes everywhere, and the system itself is very mathy. It started life as a serial. I prepared some proper worldbuilding, with enough details and background for lots of different potential story arcs, but as I wrote, I realized the main story needs to have a definitive end. So, there are four books in total, for a bit under 1500 pages, plus additional side stories, and even maybe a sequel one day. The Gore tag was added as a precaution because there are a few scenes with some light gore.
