《Harry Otter and the Harmony Fangirl》Chapter Six — Fred

The Twins were carefully brewing their new prank in the fourth-floor secret lab when their warning bell by the tapestry secret front door started ringing. So it was time to make their exit by the backdoor, which for whatever reason, would get them right outside some second-floor broom closet.

However, to their dismay, someone who was not Filch was already waiting for them in ambush. And to their surprise, she was a Gryffindor's first year nobody, which got a recent and unfortunate encounter with Peeves as she was soaking wet and smelling funny — a mix of sewer and detergent.

"Hello, Guys." She greeted them. "We need to talk. So would you be so kind as to accompany me to the kitchen before Filch realized he got played and storm out of here?" She pointed at the broom closet behind them.

So George and Fred exchanged a meaningful look. Not only did that first year know where to find them, but how to get inside the kitchen as well. So it was in a silent agreement that they followed her willingly, amazed at her composure as she went down the stairs, ignoring the people's stares until they entered the kitchen.

Only there did she finally give in and beg the House Elves for fresh clothes. And then, she shamelessly changed before sitting on a stool right in front of them as if nothing had happened. And start speaking like a business woman taking no bullshit:

"So, I know you have a map that lets you know the real-time location of everyone on castle ground. And I want to hire you to monitor someone secretly until you figure out their daily routine and any possible oddity in their behaviour."

Again, the twin exchanged glances with each other, and Fred took the lead:

"How do you know about the marauder's map?" He asked.

"Peeves sold you out." She reluctantly replied.

"What can you possibly offer a Poltergeist..." George asked.

"...for Peeves to tell you about this?" Fred finished George's sentence, taking the map off his robes.

"There are only two things Peeves do not like: killjoys and competitions. So let's say we exchanged information, and I made Peeves so happy that he felt obligated to prank me a second time."

Fred and George nodded knowingly, as they had their history with the poltergeist. Peeves certainly did not like the competition. But thankfully, he hated Filch even more.

"So, who do you want us to monitor?" Asked George.

"And what do you have to offer for our trouble?" Fred added.

"Since I'm asking you to look up something on the map, it's only fair to let you know things that would never show on the map in exchange. As for who I want you to monitor: the presumed murderer of Myrtle Warren, better known as the Hogwarts groundkeeper, Rubeus Hagrid."

The twin shifted uncomfortably at the names. They had no particular sympathy for the half-giant who quietly did his job. But the big man also looks like he could not hurt a fly. On the other hand, everyone knew of Moaning Myrtle and her brutal murder in the toilet she was currently haunting.

"Don't be fooled. The man is a hardened criminal expelled from Hogwarts for breeding dangerous monsters on Castle ground. Headmaster Dumbledore pardoned him and offered him a job. But I think he is back in business and smuggling food to the forbidden corridor, raising yet another monster. I want you to monitor him, so I can prove my claim and get him caught redhanded before he could do yet another victim."

Fred could not help but think the girl was practically a saint. She was trying to solve a decades-old cold case no one else cared about. But instead of pointing fingers and making blind accusations like any first-year would, possibly ruining an innocent man's life, she was trying to find proof. And she was willing to trade valuable secrets to get what she needed. Or maybe it was just Fred reading too much about the girl's unusual attitude.

For all those reasons, Fred nodded in agreement with the girl's request before consulting his brother. It was a first in a long time, and Fred was glad George decided to play along:

"I would like to say we have a deal, but..."

"Your answer to my last question was rather unclear." Fred completed.

"Then, let me clarify what I have to offer," She said with a crooked smile. "I will trade you two secrets of your choice, one up front, one once the job is done. You may ask me whatever you want, but here are some teasers:

First is the stories of the mapmakers. Second is a room the map cannot show. Third is something the map shows that you sorely missed. Fourth is not-a-map from the same makers and the how to get it. But you can only pick two and better choose wisely."

And then, she stared at them with that same lopsided grin, obviously waiting for Fred and George to make their pick, obviously knowing she had them hooked.

So Fred made a gesture to let her know they needed a moment and started talking with his brother:

"She knows something," George said.

"But we need to ensure she is telling the truth," Fred retorted.

"Then, let's ask for something we can verify." George pointed out.

"Which one then: something the map shows that we missed or something the room the map cannot show?"

"Better ask for the thing we are sure we cannot find by ourselves," George said.

"The room then," Fred concluded.

"The room it is," George confirmed before they nodded, and Fred asked:

"Show us that room the map cannot show, and we have a deal," Fred promised.

"Good choice." As she stood up, the girl said bye to the elves before walking out and gesturing for them to follow.

They went back from the ground floor to the seventh floor of the east tower. There, the girl steps back and forth on the side of an empty corridor, and a door appears out of nowhere, revealing a room full of junk.

"This is the Room of Requirement. Also known by the elves as the come-and-go room. Among other things, you may store all your shady stuff in this room or pick whatever caught your fancy.

But I must warn you: This may look like a treasure trove waiting to be unburied, but not everything you may find in this room is safe. At the very least, it would help if you refrained from touching anything in this room with your bare hand.

You may find more to this room than you can see, but just like the map, that is yours to figure out. As for how to get in: walk three times by the entrance while thinking you need to get back in there, and the door would appear to let you in."

Then, just like an estate agent, the girl turned around to face them after her visit ended.

"Then, I will excuse myself, let you check that this room never appears on your map on your own and await your reports on our new friend's daily routine. If you go above and beyond expectations, I might throw a bonus for a job well done but don't take any unnecessary risks with a suspected murderer."

And then, she went passed them and was about to walk out when Fred stopped her in her tracks with one last question:

"Who are you, and why are you doing all this?"

"The name is Megan Jones. Myrtle Warren was a distant relative. And I thought someone had to come and help her finally rest in peace."
