Mei shakes her head, perplexed by the answer. "What do you mean?"
"We stay here and wait for the vortex to reopen. Hopefully, by then, Jasmin should be here."
"What if Jasmin is captured like the rest of them? She must've come at the same time."
Lemir turns back around to the stove, not giving it a second thought. "Jasmin is very cunning. They wouldn't capture her so easily. It's only been a day. Let's wait and give her some time."
"How can you be so calm about this? They all could be dead by now." Mei said, standing up, raising her voice.
Lemir slams his fist down on the counter, his back still facing them. "What do you want to do? Storm into that castle and free your friends? All of you couldn't even handle a troll without one of you getting hurt." Lemir yelled while Kenji slowly covered his shoulder.
Lemir turns once again but with fury in his eyes. "Once we enter that castle, we're as good as dead!"
"Okay, so we'll sit here and talk about the weather for the next four years."
Chung looks up at Mei and grabs her arm, worried this will only escalate further. "Mei, calm down. We don't know how dangerous they are. We're not from here."
"She's right. You are not from here. No one trained any of you in any of the major arts. Those soldiers will kill you without a second thought and they are but mere pawns in there. What would you do if you faced someone with real power? I sit here every night wanting to storm that place and kill whoever is in there. I desire nothing more than to make them pay for every cruel thing they have done, but their power is too great."

Kalindil puts down the food and stands between the two, wanting to offer some type of mediation. "But Lemir, they split up their kingdom after taking over the fallen ones they destroyed. This would be the best time for a rescue."
"But what about Rathmal?"
"He went off. Rumor has it he's visiting Callimor in the Dark Kingdom."
Lemir's eyes filled with horror at the sound of the news. "The Dark Kingdom? Again? That could only mean horrible things for this world."
"I don't know. But right now, I think we should go. It might be our best chance."
"No, it's still too dangerous."
"Lemir, we should at least think about this." Valier said.
"Think about what? We don't even know those people in there. Why would we risk our lives for them?"
Mei slams the table and storms outside. The rest struggle to stand up and soon follow.
Valier crosses her arms and stares at him in disappointment. "Well, you could've handled that better."
Lemir sits down and looks up at Valier, overwhelmed by the fear of returning to that castle. "You know as much as anybody how dangerous that army is. How much more must we lose?"
Valier puts both hands on his shoulders and crouches down, looking straight in his eyes. "Jasmin entered that vortex a day ago. She would never have taken this long unless she went to rescue them. If we wait and do nothing, there's no one to save her."
"Jasmin would risk her life for any of us. Are you really going to abandon her?" Kalindil asked.
"Of course not. But there has to be another way."
"Train them. Who knows, we could always use more allies and if they're anything like the warriors from our world, they would be a great help." Kalindil said.

"Absolutely not. If we're doing this, it'll only be us and Aureim. This has to go as quietly as possible."
Mei and the others sit on a bench outside the cottage, feeling helpless and lost.
"What should we do?" Mei asked.
"What can we do? We don't have dragons or magic." Ito said.
"Mei, I'm with you all the way. If we die, we die together." Chung said, while leaning her head on her shoulder.
Sungwoo nodded in agreement.
"I'm out." Hiro said, confused why they would risk their lives to save the others. "Why are you guys so confident? They are going to kill you."
"He's right." Lemir said, opening the door. "They would kill all of you, so that's why it'll only be us three and one more. The rest of you stay here."
"What? What if you train us? With you three to teach us, we can help."
"You expect us to stay here, while you risk your lives?" Kenji asked.
"It's way too dangerous, and no offense, you all would only get in the way."
"I know we can be of some help." Kenji said.
"No, end of discussion. Don't cause any trouble. We have a lot of preparation to do." Lemir said, shutting the door.
"Why is it that every time someone says no offense, it's always very offensive?" Sungwoo asked.
"Well, that's good news. I guess we should see the others soon." Ito said.
"I don't know. I still want to learn. What if they don't return? Then what will happen?" Sungwoo asked.
"Yeah. I agree." Mei said.
"Hey." Kalindil whispered while swinging his arms, hiding behind the cottage. As they all look at him, he motions to follow him to the back of the barn. Mei and the others, unsure of what's going on, hesitantly follow him.
As they follow Kalindil, Hiro walks behind them, wondering what they're thinking. "Hey are you guys crazy? This is exactly what happens in a horror movie."
"That's why we're all going. It's safer if we all go together. Plus, Kalindil was trying to help us in there."
As they make it to the back of the barn, they see Kalindil looking around, scanning to check that no one else is there. He then turns to face them, with a serious look on his face. "Are you all serious about training?"
Hiro immediately rolls his eyes and walks toward the cottage.
"Yes, we want to help and maybe we can be a backup plan if things go bad." Mei said.
"Meet me here tomorrow at sunrise. That's when your training will start."

Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021.
