《Heretic Immortal》Chapter 15: Normal

Hours before the captain returned in his tent. At the beginning of the meeting outside the camp, in the north part where little Levis’s tent was. As he began to reawake in a dizzy and with a headache, as a strange ringing in his mind was toning down, he took a glance at his surroundings and himself, as he was shirtless and vomit was on the ground of the tent.

“I really must have been sick. At least I did not puke on the mattress.”

As he was looking at his tunic and the holes on it while making a strange face, he began uttering words that made no sense.

“M-Master? I can cultivate!? I c-can become your disciple.!?”

But no response came for his words as there were no voices in his head and a relaxed face came on him.

“Aaaa. So it was just a dream. I must have been so tired to even realize I was hallucinating.”

But his shifty eyes were betraying his relaxed attitude.

“Well, I guess it's time to eat, I'll find one of the aunties first, and then I'll talk with the village chief.”

As he exited the tent and began to walk through the numerous tents, he observed the villagers of his village, but most of the men seemed to be missing. As he walked for some time, he found a middle-aged lady cooking outside next to a giant cauldron while other ladies of different ages were helping her.

As little Levis was approaching, the cooking housewife noticed him as a frown appeared on her face.

“You little boy, where have you been when we departed? My husband had searched for you but to no avail, only for you to come out of nowhere with the guards.”

“I-I did not know we were going anywhere, aunty village chief.”

“What, “aunty village chief”, if you want to eat, change and take a bath, you look and smell like a beggar's kid.”

While the wife of the village chief was berating the young boy, the other ladies began to snicker and giggle at the duo. That seemed like a mother scolding her child.

"And you stop giggling and turn the spoon, don't let the food be burned and prepare the ingredients, the men should return by the time the sun goes down, and you little fool, follow me.”

As the chief's wife berated the other wives and made little Levis follow her in between the tents, they arrived at a half-raised tent with an open ceiling.

“Go on. There should be some warm water in the buckets inside. Clean yourself. I'll bring some new clothes.”

Without commenting back, little Levis entered the half-open tent and took off his dirty tunic and pants. As he grasped a sponge and used a small cup to take and pour water on himself, he began to clean what appeared to be dirt and some faint blood stains. Just as no more than five minutes were past and he was almost done while turning his head, he jumped in fright as the chief's wife was staring at him with a grin on her face.

“How are you going to impress girls when you are so small.”

But when the word small came out of the village chief's wife, unsure at whatever she was referring to, a tinge of anger and frustration appeared on his face as he rebuked her words.

“I'm not small. I'll grow bigger later, bigger than anybody, like a bear, grandpa has said.”

“Yes, yes, you big bear, finish your bath and change into these clothes. I'll wait for you at the dinner table. We'll all eat together.”

“Together? Alright.”

As the chief wife left while putting the clothes outside, a tinge of uneasiness appeared on his face as he was not good at dealing with a lot of people, even with his villagers as his anxiety of large crowds was coming out every time, as most of the time, he would eat along with his grandpa and grandma.

As he was done bathing and changing into the cloth prepared for him, which were nothing more than the same rough, coarse clothes as the old ones without the holes and cuts, he began walking out of the enclosed area made for bathing and taking the main roadway in between the tents. But as he began to walk toward the village chief's wife to ask when the dinner would be ready and if he could take it with him into his tent, he began hearing footsteps that were coming in his direction, and before turning around, the voice of a little girl could be heard calling him.

“Little brother Levis.”

“Who is your little brother? You're my younger sister. I am older than you.”

“No luck in there, Levis. You’ll be stuck as the little brother if you are shorter than her.”

“I am older than you too.”

But as he turned and confronted the little girl of no more than eight years old and the boy of eleven and one more boy, that was slower than them as he appeared to be four or five, as he was the only one shorter than little Levis.

“Big brother.”

“That's right. I am the big brother. It seems the young shrimp knows better than you two.”

“If he's a shrimp, then what you are, you're not taller than little Bo.”

“Yo-Y-You do you think I’ll not grow to be the greatest man in the village? I’ll--.”

“Yes, “the great man”, I've heard it too many times. So why have you not come with us, with whom have you come?”

“That's--.”

As he was being pressured about the happening of his absence the morning that everyone had left, little Levis began to describe a partial lie as he was hiding the occurrence of the elders as even he could not bear it to remember it. But as his story was short and the children began to tell their part of what they had experienced since the morning and their long and tiring journey as the guards had them move as fast as they could to arrive at the earliest at the camp and the allocation of the tents.

The sun moved ever close to the horizon as the kids were talking, only to be called by a lady of the village.

“Let's go.”

“Yes.”

But as they arrived, little Levis observed several rows of tables able to hold dinner for fifty or so people. But before anything could happen, as the seats were still empty, but footsteps could be heard as men and women were coming in their direction, little Levis separated from the group of the three while sneaking to where the food was being cooked and with like a practice profession took a dish full of potato porridge with a piece of meat and a little jug of water and ran before anyone could even notice him.

But the three children obviously noticed his absence from their group as irritation appeared on the face of the little girl.

“He ran off again. He will use the same excuse again of having eaten already to stay away and not come.”

“You can not do anything. Mother had said he's afraid of big groups of people, only when old grandpa Ato is around he's ok.”

“Hmmmm, he's not a kid anymore. What is there to be afraid of?”

As the kids were talking about little Levis, the person in question was having a feast, as he had eaten to his full in his tent.

“Aaaahhhhh, I am stuffed. I can't eat anymore. If the village chief's wife comes here, I'll say I can not move because I eat too much. Yes, let's go with that.”

[Good, if you're all done, we can resume from where we left.]

[No, you should do a more compact version of what we said before.]

[Yes, that is a good idea for once, if this kid is as dumb as he looks, he might have forgotten everything by now.]

But just as he was lying on his back in satisfaction from eating, the nightmare that were his voices began speaking as if nothing had been happening, as though his madness did not care about him whatsoever as he was plunged once more into the sea of insanity.

“No, Nooooo--.”
