《Visceral》28 Battle

One of them stepped out of the tall grass right in front of me. He had a long neck and a pointed furry face like a weasel. He had the body of a man with narrow shoulders and short legs. A fat fluffy tail stood up behind him. He looked like a mix between a squirrel a prairie dog and a man. He had on a spectacle over one eye and was chewing a long stem. He patted a club in the palm of one hand. His intentions were clear. He was not one of the raiders we had killed earlier but for whatever reason, he did not like our presence in the plains.

I didn’t wait for him to tell me why. I sprang on him and sank the blade into his long neck as we collapsed down on the ground. Then all mayhem broke loose. I drove the blade in two more times and looked back to see a club catch a falconite across the face. Mia pounced into the tall grass and went berserk with her claws. Shia launched body parts in all directions as she mowed through.

Plainsmen dove on top of my clan's heads. Battering everyone with clubs.

The dwarves were overrun and taking repeated blows to the head. Goar firing rounds just above my head raining showers of blood down over me. Bodies started dropping some of the dead plainsmen landed on top of me. I flung them off as I stood to my full height and held my fist up tucking it to my chest. It pulled one of the many plainsmen off the dwarves straight into my waiting hand. With my other, I buried my blade into his gut. I pulled another one as mine fell, this time I wrapped the spine around his throat and used him as a shield from the two clubs being swung at me.

I used the body to beat the other two to the ground, then sank the blade into their chests. Two plainsmen landed on my back, and I tumbled to my face. They began beating me over the head with their clubs and I was about to black out when they were suddenly gone. I looked up to see Goar ramming them into a crowd of other plainsmen with his horns. He was firing from both guns just past his face as he drove them back.

I stood and tried to pull another one to me.

I had the room so I let the tail unwrap from my arm and whipped the blade through the air. It stuck between the shoulder blades of one and I yanked it back ripping bone and flesh. It screamed and Thurnar slammed his hammer down on its face. He roared and smashed through two more.

I get experience for assisted kills. This filled me with blood fervor. I slashed and smashed through crunching bones and spilling guts onto my feet. I grabbed one by the head and smashed his skull against mine. I grabbed another and bit his shoulder with my tusks. I swung my whip and hooked another fleeing in the grass. I pulled him back to me as he screamed. He tried to hide behind his tail but I pushed it down with my hand and snatched his jaw from his face. His tongue hanging from his bloody face was enough to break my madness and I looked away.

My eyes fell on the two elves. The dark-haired one speared two at the same time. The blond spun and slashed his way through the last one and stopped just in front of me grinning wide. “I got thirteen. How many did you get Chief?” His eyes were wild and dancing side to side.

I glanced at my data pad. Ten notifications of exp. Ten. I only got ten. “Eighteen,” I said.

I turned to see Mia standing in the tall grass panting. She was further in than she had been. She must have been chasing down the ones that fled. I wondered if she had also killed more than I had.

Agatha pushed past dragging a makeshift gurney. My dingo lay in the gurney made from the poles of my tent. The old goat woman cut right through the blood and guts and looked me right in the face, “path’s clear, lets get goin,” she said as she passed.

Millie passed next with a gurney of her own, extra tents piled on. “Come on, mutt, I ain't carrying ya.” She called over her shoulder. Shia’s dog limped behind her with his head low and his tail between his legs. “I gave him what for.” She winked at me as she passed.

The rest of us stood and watched as they disappeared into the tall grass. I looked back at the others and shook my head. Then glanced at my data pad again. Two things stood out to me.
