《The Reclaimers》09: The Ritual
Advertisement
Today the King has called for normal people to take up arms against their local lords and governmental leaders following the raid on the Royal Court by members of the military. A Division of Knights assisted the immediate arrest of all Noble families that attended the most recent court gathering, and in cooperation with the military academy, it was revealed that over 100 pounds of gold and other precious metals had been embezzled in other foreign nations.
Many believe this to be the immediate reaction to the sudden replacement of the former king.
Royal Press Publication, “Arrests at the Royal Court!”
Part 1: The Grand Cathedral
Fifty knights, twenty members of the Royal Guard, the Royal Family, and the Great Sage himself were to attend the summoning ritual that would once again bring a group of heroes to the great kingdom and bring it to salvation.
Or that’s at least what was taught to the denizens of the kingdom. They and the Royal Family were not immune to such tales, yet in such desperate times the decision was made to play their trump card.
Princess Leccamaradel Emma Araish sat quietly in the darkened chamber of the Grand Cathedral. This holy place once brought the kingdom to greatness, yet at the same time, such a place brought upon the destruction of the old ways.
She basked in the limited light provided by the scattered torches letting out a soft hum of an old song she had once been taught many years in her past. Those around her, though few listened to her hum as each one patiently awaited the arrival of the king and queen.
Captain Orwell stood at the entrance to the chamber. He guarded the only entrance and exit as he gazed upon the stained glass that decorated the roof above. The colors were faded, and dust covered the once grand images displayed, yet he found it interesting to figure out what story was being told through each distorted image.
Not less than five hours earlier, the Royal Court had been stormed by members of the king’s guard and each feudal lord had been arrested on the account of treason. This immediately put the king into complete power, thus the governmental status of the kingdom had been flipped on its head in less than a single day.
Members of each feudal lord’s army celebrated this new proclamation and leaders from each faction had gathered at the capital to form a new military under the same flag.
Captain Orwell was unsure how he felt upon hearing the news, but he kept his mouth shut due to knowing better than to step against the King during his mad dash for power over the kingdom. What stood out to him the most was how a good portion of the citizens within the confines of the capital supported this “revolution”, and how the rest of the kingdom paid seemingly no mind to the change in hands.
Lecca’s hum slowly came to an end just in time for silence to fill the room as a man in fashionable clothing entered the small chamber.
With a condensing tone the man adjusted his bow tie as he called out to Lecca, “Princess Araish, it is time. The king requires your presence.”
Raising from the seat she sat in, the Princess quietly nodded in confirmation. With the guards and knights following behind her, Lecca followed the man who was now identified as a Noble from house Orpheus. The man gleefully spoke about the cathedral they walked in as the destination they wished to reach neared.
“Lies. That was all that was spread from this godforsaken place. Just look around, without the proper funding from the people, this once holy place would’ve been in shambles long ago.” Lecca remained silent as the noble continued his speech, “To put it bluntly your father is making the right choice to summon heroes for the sake of this kingdom. Not even that old bastard held the will necessary to do the right thing in the face of an ever-looming threat on our doorstep.”

“And do you believe starting a campaign against one of our former allies is worth the sudden rearmament for the military?” Lecca chose her words carefully as she questioned the Noble who snapped in place and swiftly turned around to her words.
“Princess, do you even realize why we are doing this?” The man asked with venom. “Though the church has been reduced to nothingness, it is obvious that these Holy Knights will bring us salvation. You needn’t have a building to receive a blessing!”
“It seems we have arrived.” Lecca said angering the noble.
Placing her hands on the large wooden doors, a loud groan came from the doors as they opened and revealed the room inside that was once hidden away. Before her was a large circular room. Candles laid within the circle where a magic circle was being made by fourteen attendants of the Great Sage.
The king, queen, and crown prince waited to the side as the Great Sage explained the necessary steps needed to successfully perform a summoning ritual. Lecca and her guards approached the center of the room to inspect the grafting of the blue powder that was being placed.
Kneeling and brushing her fingers over the powder, Lecca calmly rubbed the powder in her hand making it give off a faint glow that illuminated her hand. It was neither bright nor dull, just right; it truly was the perfect powder to preform such a risky summoning.
There had always been myths among the common folk that summoning in general was something that could be performed with little to no effort, yet such a thought could be further from the truth.
If the powder was of the wrong type, if the mages or sages weren’t trained properly in the arts, and more so if the place of summoning effected the casters abilities, there were many variables that could make the art fail. Then there was the silent warning of the being itself. Would it cooperate? Would it rebel against the summoners or royalty?
Too many questions with so little answers.
“It seems the time has arrived.” Captain Orwell said.
Letting the fading powder fall to the ground, Lecca looked to her right as the Great Sage began to gather his assistant mages. Each one spread out around the circle, and behind them the knights and guards organized themselves in a defensive posture, each waiting to draw their swords.
Lecca herself rose from the ground and walked next to the Great Sage to oversee the ancient ritual. As the mages rose their arms, all she could do was hold her breath and wait.
Part 2: Disillusion
From where he stood a low light began to illuminate the room, he found himself in. The monarch, Aldrecht Spell Shaldrect, leader of the Kingdom of Yondle, and founder of the 32nd Calvary Division, he, his family and his attendants stood waiting.
Frowning from the place he stood-the aged monarch remained on his past as the Great Sage began the summoning ritual. In his younger years Aldrecht was born and raised as a warrior. He would often find himself betting into conflicts with most of the other kids in his town, thus once he was of proper age, his father sent him in the military to “teach him a lesson.”
Under the protection of then Knight Jonas Howitzer, Aldrecht excelled in his position as an assistant to the knight. Formulating plans, executing missions, and overall rising through the ranks of an ordinary soldier, Jonas had begun to take notice of the boy’s talent, and soon Aldrecht had found himself in the military academy at age fifteen. Though he was considered old for the par, he continued achieving victories, and soon after he met his wife, Juna.

Throughout his tenure in the academy, Aldrecht’s noble spirit and outgoing personality led him to gain infamy amounts many of the actual noble families that once served the royal court. There was always the saying that no commoner should be allowed into the academy, but then king Julius Harold Arish had prevented any drastic actions from being taken securing his position in the military.
Even with consoling words from the King himself, and a legion of individuals from every aspect of the world, it was never enough for Aldrecht. Like the others he wanted to be respected, he wanted to lead others, yet the bastards he worked beside during his time in the academy attempted to block every action he would wish to perform as a Centurion in the military.
“Dear why are you frowning?” Queen Juna Shaldrect spoke in a gentle tone as she placed her hand on her husband’s forearm gaining his attention, “You look quite pale, are you feeling alright?”
“Yes, thank you for your concern.” Aldrecht said as he gently placed a kiss on his wife’s forehead, “I am simply worried about how this will play out. After all it has been two hundred years since such a historic event has happened.”
“That is true. The future will be in your hands once this is over.” Queen Juna said with a faint smile.
As the summoning proceeded with the powder glowing stronger, the king and royal family were advised to back away. As grateful as Aldrecht was for this moment, the time had come, and he and his retainers followed the order.
“Lecca?” Aldrecht coughed out as a gust of wind emanated from the center of the room.
Lecca’s voice was something he heard during the summoning process. She spoke strongly and to the point as she assisted the Great Sage in the summoning. He truly wondered why he immediately thought of the first-born Princess in this very moment.
“So, it is time...” The king lowered his head and closed his eyes as a small smile came across his face. He accepted that his life would change forever.
“Father?” his son asked.
Before Aldrecht could address his son, two streams of light shot up from the blue powder blinding those not casting the spell. Rushing back and forth, supplying the mages with the necessary mana to carry out the spell, Lecca began to grow exhausted as more beams of light spouted from the ground.
Each beam eventually grew together into a single light that almost resembled a tree. The influx of mana being released from the powder made the king lightheaded, and he wearily fell to his knees as the light grew even brighter over the constant shouts of the silver-haired Princess.
“We’ve got an influx over here!” A mage shouted as he felt the energy being drained from his body.
“Back off! I’ll cover your position!” Lecca shouted as she prepped herself to run towards the mage.
“Don’t! Stay by the Great Sage!” The man shouted making her stop in her first step. “You must support him! I got this!”
All Lecca could do was nod at the man as she channeled her remaining manna through her palms and towards the bright beam of light.
“…And today’s news contains some very interesting truths that the US government has hid from its people once more.”
Lecca’s eyes widened and her focus began to fade as a rush of voices filled the room.
“-we’re stuck here! They’re treating us like animals!”
“-over 500 dead. Latest reports have placed this to be the most tragic loss of life since the terrorist attacks-”
“-and now the United Nations have once again gathered to discuss environmental concerns in Africa, yet the TIPA…”
“Metal-Zero-One. Confirm we lost them?”
“Hold at angels five-five. Twisting is in route to extract the Green Berets.”
“Overlord, Flight of two F-25s with a full load of JDAMS requesting clearance, over?
Stopping her transfer of mana, Lecca fell to the ground while clutching her head. She let out a shrill screech as sweat, and tears poured down her face. The other mages and the Great Sage were effected, but their experience was not as intense due to their positioning.
“-mom! Check out this drawing I made!”
“Fucking hell! Can’t make rent this month!”
“Hands up! On the ground! Stop!”
“F.B.I! Open up!”
“Hey Kristen?”
“Today the Prime Minister of Germany paid a visit to their next-door neighbor Poland to strengthen military ties against the looming threat of the American-Russian war games.”
“Shots fired! Shots fired! James is down!”
“Where the fuck is my bagel!?”
“Please make it stop!” Lecca squealed as she rolled on the ground with tears leaking from her eyes. “Please!” With Lecca thrashing her head wildly, all the king and his family could do was watch her scream in agony as they were held back by their guards and Captain Orwell.
Lecca’s calls for help were soon answered. The myriad of voices suddenly stopped as the bright beam began to fade. Clutching her head and standing with the assistance of a knight, Lecca attempted to stand up straight as she looked to the center of the room where the bright light had once been.
“Staff Sergeant!”
Each knight drew their swords as a voice called from the middle of the room. It was of a language they did not understand, but to the King it sounded familiar to the old imperial language that was spoken eons ago.
“Where’s Sergeant Randall? The captain?” A younger sounding voice sounded frantic as it reverberated throughout the chamber.
“Lieutenant?” The man that went by “Staff Sergeant” asked as he looked around wildly.
“Still in one piece!” another man called back in a pained voice.
“What the fuck was that!?”
“Hell, if I know-oh shit! Weapons up!”
As the knights’ eyes adjusted to the low light environment, several men raised what looked to be sticks in the dark.
Stepping forward and activating a gem she received from the Great Sage, Lecca addressed the men making their weapons turn to her instead of those around. “Great Holy Knights-”
