《The tales of the Omnidragon》Chapter 18 The aftermath

“Is fighting truly worth it? The rewards granted by the system are many, and, sure, controlling territory and its people will flood you and your masters with resources. That said, lost lives cannot be recovered, and rebuilding is much harder than destroying. Please, think twice before warring within my city, for if you do, you’ll lose much more than your conscience.”
-The Fair Lady of Derthas, repelling a punishing expedition by words alone.
Nashariel pov
The Templars and the remaining villagers went back to the ruins of their city. The pragmatic side of the elves showed, as they had harvested the fallen pair before the travel.
Nashariel hadn’t been willing to help. Dismantling and transporting dragon corpses felt… wrong, on some deeper level, so the many small golems helped the people to transport the… goods. She provided regenerations, but nothing else. The rest of her team was well, on a physical level, but all the death had deeply worn them down. The words ‘baptism by fire’ couldn’t have been more literal and metaphorical than this.
Back at the ruined village, the druid put her staff right into the central plaza. A green-brown dome slowly appeared, embracing the entirety of the settlement. “We are safe, for now. Today we rest, tomorrow we build.”
Her people muttered their agreements. Some went to their ruined houses, but most of the others went into the tunnel, sending nervous glances at the sky. Nashariel wondered if she could offer some mental healing, but her skill wasn’t yet to the point of caring for true traumas. Again, Generalist problems… she internally growled.
"Templars, a word." Asked Phillia. She sat on nearby debris, gazing at the inter of a nearby house, where the Warband had collapsed a single wall.
They complied.
“We can wait. We understand if this isn’t the right time.” Nashariel said softly. She wanted to ask about the Quest and its contradiction, but not during a funeral or shortly after.
The druid waved off her objection. “You saved what little of my village is left. I owe you an explanation, at the very least.” She started, taking in a deep breath.
Phillia shared pretty much of what Garel already said to them, but in another point of view, then kept going. “We were right there," she indicated her glowing staff, "protected by my Artifact’s last embers of power. I thought that we would have all died, but I was ready to go so far as to come back as a Banshee to kill those monsters if it was my home's last hope to survive.
To my surprise, the female stopped her flames. She called us unworthy of the Huntress’s soil,” her eyes twitched, “but then gave us a proposal. They would have spared us if I sent every organization I could that Quest; we would have been freed if they found out who they were searching for, or enough experience for their tastes. You were the first to come here. I’m sorry.”
“Did they tell you anything else? Who or why they were searching for?” Asked Nashariel. She can’t be serious.
The other shook her head. “No. I overheard them talking about things, from time to time, but nothing outside of their Clan. Again, I’m sorry.”
Nashariel was stunned. All of this… just for me? How… the priest that cut us off! Was this all a ploy?! She grabbed her head. “I need a moment by myself. It… it’s fine, really.”
The omnidragon ignored the distressed calls of her team and darted away, somewhere in the rubble. She took off her rage on a mostly destroyed house, after making sure that no one was near her, fully leveling it. The dragokin let out a roar more similar to a scream.

Minutes later, she was panting, her thoughts wandering on their own. She remembered that, in most of her dreams, she either died at the hands of other dragons or killed them. The Grandmaster had warned her, once, about the fact that people would either want to use her or kill her, but he never talked about monsters too! Nashariel had taken the warning seriously, but… not enough, it seemed. First the ‘priest’, then these dragons. Were they in agreement, or this was simply a stroke of bad luck? Someone said that it was going to be fine, after all. She smiled a humorless smile. All of this, just to seek me out. Damn.
The girl leaned against the remainder of the wall, sliding to the ground. She took in the devastation around her. A ruined kitchen a few houses on her left, some broken toys in the streets… the system that had rung in her ears seemed so… hollow.
I will prevent this from happening again, but I need more power. Nashariel decided. She bounced on her feet, slapping her cheeks. First, to rebuild!
Days passed.
The Templars had stopped to give everyone a hand, both because these people had next to nothing left, and because the Astillians had no idea where to go. They had no hearth to ask for direction and neither for an escort back home.
Phillia examined the powder left from their teleportation, confirming their suspicions. They had to go back the hard way. She was willing to draw them a map from there to Andriel, as soon as the basic structures of the city could be reestablished. She had been apologetic towards them, and… the Templars weren't in a hurry to correct that behavior. Many could die in an ambush composed of four dragons, and Nashariel didn't regret following Karda's orders. The little ones that she grew up with would have died, even if the adults came with them.
Fixed teleport formations were complicated, but the short version was that a Spatial-caster had to link the specific location to a large network. If the connection was severed, like in this case, then a Spatial-mage had to re-link it. Neither of the presents knew spatial magic, unfortunately.
Nashariel took care of moving large debris and hunting in the forest. She was glad to face monsters above the hundred range. They were amazing to train against, since they were still stuck at the basic elements. [Omnidragonn kin] wasn't happy about that, though.
The dragoness met with the boar’s version of Lyah'thien. These monsters were much larger than usual and were sometimes covered in moss. Still, they proved little challenge to her, if Nashariel took enough care to avoid their charges. She hunted Fire-based monsters with extreme prejudice.
The omnidragon also kept generating temporary metal for the people, shaped in crude ingots, and decimated the tree population around the village to provide wood.
Rebuilding the wall had been the first priority, even before people’s own houses. The elves were impossibly exhausted, but not broken like Nashariel would have been in their place. Or any Astillian, if she was being honest, seeing that a single attack had worsened the mood of the entire city for years. Benefits of living in a small village surrounded by death, I suppose. One day the girl reflected, when she watched some children play tag with each other.
It wasn’t all flowers and rainbows. Despite her help, most of the villagers kept their distance from the omnidragon. Nashariel didn’t blame them: A bunch of dragons had just leveled their city and killed most of them. It still stung, but it was manageable. She still tried to not walk around covered in blood.

Veliel was the star of the show everywhere she went. None had forgotten her heals, and one or two elves had tried to grow particularly closer, much to the siren's embarrassment. Even now, her songs raised morale each time she sang, magic or not.
The humans had taken the opportunity to practice their hobbies while making themselves useful. Dan learned from Althos, who had officially apologized to Nashariel about the… accident, the secrets of alchemy. Dorel put his father’s techniques to good use by forging tools with the material provided by Nashariel.
Weeks passed.
People’s morale kept growing after the first few days. The dragoness even managed to receive a hesitant wave without someone shivering. Progress is progress, she decided.
During one of Nashariel’s hunts, she decided to visit the graves of those who fought against the dragons. They were still there, undisturbed. The flowers had grown large and beautiful. It looks like a garden, Nashariel thought. She didn't disturb the people resting below but paid her respects.
After that, the dragoness did as Phillia asked her. She flew in front of the collapsed cave, ignoring the cooled lava disseminated in the grassland. [Improved burrow] guided her work to open the entrance in a way that it wouldn’t have collapsed on her. Slowly but surely, Nashariel managed to open the path.
The elves said that the dragons had no hoard behind them, but Phillia had asked Nashariel to check in person. After all, if the dragoness had received [Draconic hoard], then these guys were bound to have the same skill. She and the druid were on the same page.
Within, she found a thriving ecosystem. The essence leaked from her fight had lured some monsters in. It had to since it took a lot of essence to directly spawn even a single monster.
Nashariel clashed with weak slimes of various elements, Fire-aligned mostly, for obvious reasons, and even some Lava-golems. Unfortunately, their level was too low to hold a Core.
The dragoness cleared the cave at the best of her ability, searching at the same time. She was sure that her senses were inferior to those of the remaining Rangers, but her instinct should have compensated for that.
The dragoness started in the most obvious place: the lair that the Warband slept in. The room was linked to the smaller one where the elves had been contained, and had nothing peculiar about it, except for some stalactites that resembled ugly rocky teeth.
Nashariel carefully searched in each corner. As she expected, nothing came to light. The dragoness searched for places where dragons could easily get in, but not wingless creatures.
She gave up after an hour. Nashariel then walked onto the ex-prisoners chamber. There was little to nothing left, only a large hole that led to the tunnels outside. Garel destroyed a wall? What an entrance. Nashariel wasn’t surprised. The only other entrance had been guarded by two dragons, after all. He was surely a madman. Madwolf? Madelf? Eh, whatever. She ignored the small pang of sadness. I think he liked me.
The omnidragon once again looked around. After half an hour or so, a glint caught her eye. The room was roughly circular but rocky. If Nashariel watched from the ground that was it, but since she was taller than all the elves, at least in her draconic form, she could easily spot an alcove above.
Taking flight, she rose. There, glittering gems and coins immediately caught her eye, followed by metallic works of art and large chests. “Holy duck that’s a hoard!” She exclaimed. The dragons did raze a city, after all.
Nashariel transformed into a dragokin, then proceeded to shove everything in her Spatial-mantle, taking particular care with the medicinal-smelling chests. [Draconic hoard] was having the time of its life, judging by the bonus it was giving to Nashariel. The mantle needed quite a lot of mana to function, right now.
Still, this belonged to the city, and her Quest directly ordered Nashariel to give everything back. With a last glance to see if she had forgotten anything, the dragokin flew back to the city.
Phillia was most grateful. She had Nashariel drop everything she had found in the plaza, calling them every elf to claim what was theirs.
Althos tightly hugged Nashariel, as the alchemical stuff unsurprisingly belonged to him. Or rather, his master who had fallen to the dragons.
A few of the rings within the hoard were Spatial-storages, and one of them belonged to the druid. She was delighted in finding curious-looking instruments, signed with her goddess’ stemma: a bow and a leaf crossing together. Lyah’thien was the name of the goddess of the hunt and nature, but also that of her forest, said to have been her favorite hunting ground, many millennia ago.
The majority of the treasure wasn’t reclaimed at all. As the Quest asked them, the Templars refused even the smallest portion of it, even if Phillia insisted. Nashariel felt [Draconic hoard]’s effects trickling away to nothing.
Flying above the city in dragokin form, the omnidragon saw that everyone’s efforts bore fruits. The walls stood defiant, reinforced by metal. The city had been redesigned to be less messy and facilitate guerrilla warfare, should it be needed again.
Nashariel had helped in excavating tunnels below each house with [Improved burrow] and her newly acquired [Earth manipulation], linking them to a sort of central hub deeper below the city. She and the elves had gradually expanded it to roughly mirror the village’s size. Nashariel caught a few of them thinking about expanding the tunnels to farm special plants and such, but it was a long-term project and, most importantly, not her business.
During this month, Nashariel had provided all the mental healing she was able to, together with Veliel. Useless or not, they had to try something. The siren far surpassed her in mental expertise, so the dragokin absorbed what she could from her fellow monster. Her friend confirmed her suspicions about [Mental healing] being insufficient to heal people, as Sofia did to Nashariel after seeing death for the first time up-close. They needed a combined skill from Mind and Healing, but both monsters were barred from that since they were too young. They also knew that either a personal Quest, a milestone, or simply getting older would have remedied this problem.
As the number of urgent things to do lessened day by day, Nashariel found herself a moment of peace. She sat nearby the newly rebuilt fountain in the central plaza and opened her full status since forever ago.
*Quest: Fire from above.
A young Warband composed of four fire dragons has recently settled near an elven village called ‘Althei’, demanding heavy tributes and threatening the citizens. Protect the innocents, Templar.
Objective: Defeat the Warband. Help the villagers to rebuild, if possible, or aid their escape.
Reward: 500 gold. Twice the normal amount of experience.
Bonus objective: Retrieve the corpses.
Bonus rewards: An item made of draconic body parts, plus 500 gold per corpse. The amount may vary depending on the state of said corpses.
Note: If found, their hoard is to be given to the village.
Result: Warband defeated successfully. Corpses were retrieved by the villagers.
Throughout devastating losses, you have defeated the Warband. You provided all the help you could by healing and caring for the weak, and gave them everything you could without asking anything in return. The Goddess of Compassion smiles upon you, Templar.
Retrieve your reward in the Bastion.
Quest: Believers of the Omnidragon.
As an Omnidragon and a future ruler, mortals and monsters alike will put their trust in you. You must care for them, defend them, and defeat those who wish for their harm at the best of your abilities.
Primary objective: What’s a ruler, if not the aegis for their Empire? Stand in front of your enemy and endure, for such is the weight of every ruler worthy of this name.
Reward: The Protection Aspect will be granted for free, with two additional skills at no cost.
Secondary objective: An empty empire is no empire at all. Care for your followers, and they will care for you in return.
Additional reward: The Healing Aspect will be granted for free, with two additional skills at no cost.
Third objective: The empire rejoices when its enemies crumble. As a ruler, it’s your job to be the tip of the spear that pierces each foe's heart.
Additional reward: The Radiance Aspect will be granted for free, with two additional skills at no cost.
If you fulfill all the objectives, an Omnidragon-tier skill will be granted to you.
Penalties:
Failing to fulfill any of the objectives above will lead to the corresponding affinity to cost twice as much in the future.
Failing two objectives will result in the loss of your most powerful two skills, which will need to be re-unlocked at twice their original price, their components included.
Failing to fulfill all three objectives will lead to the loss of your most developed Variant, together with all its skills. The same penalty cost will be applied to each skill.
Results:
You have sacrificed your own body to ensure the survival of those you call friends and even the ones who saw nothing more than another monster. Such is the spirit of a defender. Your spirit.
Protection affinity now belongs to you.
You have shown dedication to your followers, so much that they haven’t received a single major wound. You have healed your other allies time and time again, but, as they aren’t your followers, they fall outside of the purpose of this Quest.
Healing will not be a part of your arsenal today, but no penalty is applied either, for an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.
The cost to buy this affinity is halved, for you have spread the light of hope even within those who didn’t kneel to you.
You have shown no mercy in annihilating your enemies. Through thick and thin, you have assured that none would live to tell their tale. None but your allies and yourself, of course.
Radiance is eager to sear those who threaten you, young omnidragon.
Penalty: None.
Rewards: Protection and Radiance affinity. A total of four free skills per attunement, including the usual pair. *
Nashariel let out an annoyed grunt when she read the Healing line. She agreed with it, as in ‘better to lose the prize than her friends being hurt’, but she had hoped that all the healing they had done could count for something. The loss of an Omnidragon-tier skill hurt the worst, but half the price for an affinity was… okay.
Nashariel sighed.
*Fire-dragon Lvl 101-112 have been slain.

Earth manipulation
The soil is all around you, available to host new life. This skill will help you maneuver such abundance to reshape the ground as you see fit. As this can be used to diffuse new life, the earth is no stranger to catastrophes and your foes will soon learn this.
You may choose to move, press, or loosen the targeted earth, up to 20m from you.
The more mana expended, the greater the effect.
Cost: Variable. The closer to soil is the manipulated earth, the cheaper the cost.
Upgrade cost: 6 points Lvl. *
Nashariel whistled in appreciation while looking at the benefits of time and a Core filled with a Tier 2 element. She touched the dark gem in her armor. It hadn’t changed element during the fight with the two dragons, but it wasn’t unstable anymore. Nashariel thought that it also seemed bigger, but she wasn’t certain.
She glanced at her points. I could buy a lot of stuff with this. I could also finish my last Quest… I kinda want another racial skill like that. First, let’s see what my milestone gifted me.
Nashariel approached the slate, tapping it once.
*Congratulations for having reached your third milestone!
Reward: Draconic presence
Draconic presence Lvl 1
Dragons always inspire or terrorize mortals and lesser monsters who gaze upon them, and now you too gain this ability. Aspirant dragon hunters will have to think twice before crossing your path, and those who you wish to protect will fight harder to defend you and themselves.
You gain an aura that can be toggled on and off.
You can choose between two effects:
Fear: Fear grips the heart from within. Enemy buffs will be slightly weakened. Enemies will be more likely to escape.
Inspiration: A reason to fight on. Ally buffs will be slightly empowered. As long as you are in their sight, allies’ stats will be increased slightly.
Cost: 100 mana/s, twice that on activation. Certain activities or attitudes will trigger this skill’s activation for no cost, but not in a numerical sense.
Range: Other’s clear line of sight.
Upgrade cost: 5 points Lvl.
Next milestone: Lvl 200 *
Seems good! Nashariel remembered that most elves seemed terrified during the fights, but she had attributed it to their circumstances. They managed to stand their ground despite a skill… wow. Her respect for the villagers grew.
Activating the skill, Nashariel didn’t spot anything different in her surroundings. She only felt the drain on her mana. Passive activation? Harder to counter, then. Onto the new Aspects!
Nashariel entered the Light chamber. Two places shone particularly brightly: one became a tower shield that split in two, the other’s luminescence tinted gold and vanished altogether, leaving only golden hinges to welcome her in the new chamber.
Thinking about her father, Nashariel walked directly into the former. Rows of massive shields and armors decorated the room, whose pillars were shaped as sleeping cat-sized dragons. The usual one that Nashariel had learned that was her consumed resistance skill had its dragon standing vigilant of all fours, doubled in size. I bet that Dad would love this room. I wonder how they are… I hope they haven’t learned that I went missing. After an entire month of absence, Nashariel found it unlikely but shook her head. No sense in thinking about that. Let’s see…
Nashariel took her sweet time. For once, she had all the time in the world to consider her next choices, and this was Dad’s element! She couldn’t rush it!
*Aura of courage, Aura of sacrifice, Defender’s beacon, Damage storage, Improved retaliation, Defender’s armor, Defender dragon's fighting style, Improved defenses, Defensive scales, Defender’s tattoos, Defensive wings, Improved armor, and Improved shield have been acquired.
Aura of courage, Aura of sacrifice, and Defender’s beacon would like to merge for 16 points. Y/N?
Aura of sacrifice, Aura of courage, and Defender's beacon merge into-> Defender's aura.
Defender’s aura Lvl 1
A true defender stands in front of their allies. As such, you hold off the unending tide of your enemies to protect those weaker than you… but you’re not alone. You know that you’re the shield of your people and that you must protect its sword. Don't fail, Defender.
You gain an aura that can be toggled on and off.
Within this aura, your allies take reduced damage. The damage reduced is automatically redirected to you, and cannot be avoided. Side effects cannot be redirected, but ongoing damage can.
Your light lifts the spirits of your allies. They are resistant to natural and magical fear, including reactions such as being paralyzed in fear. You, instead, become immune to such effects, as long as their source isn't significantly stronger than you are.
Once per day, you can become a rallying beacon, significantly empowering the effect of this skill.
Cost: 3% mana/s. You can choose the amount of mana given to the beacon; the more amount of mana you sacrifice, the longer it lasts and the stronger it becomes.
Range: 12m.
Upgrade cost: 7 points Lvl.
Defensive scales, Defender’s tattoos, Defensive wings, Improved defenses, Improved armor, and Improved shield would like to merge for 24 points. Y/N?
Defensive scales, Defender’s tattoos, Defensive wings, Improved defenses, Improved armor, and Improved shield merge into-> Body of the defender dragon
Body of the defender dragon Lvl 1
Defender dragons are the shields and armors of their entire brethren, and, as such, they cannot allow any weaknesses to persist. These dragons mutate their whole body to shed off their weak points and absorb even more damage. Their characteristic tattoos have been observed to brighten the more they took damage, then become dull once they retaliated with a blow above and beyond the expected power of the Light element.
Your vulnerable parts, such as your wings, have been thickened considerably, while your scales do a better job at protecting your body. Your effective dexterity has been decreased considerably.
Any defensive equipment, enchantment, skill, spell, and buff you receive is cheaper to apply, lasts for longer and is empowered.
Tattoos run along your body, powering hand to hand as you receive damage. Every time an enemy strikes you, this bonus damage is added to your blows.
The healing you receive is more effective, and altered statuses that bar you from acting are weakened.
Upgrade cost: 8 points Lvl.
Damage storage Lvl 1
Defenders from all races rush to buy this skill, for even the best protection is useless if the enemy doesn't fall. The energy from each blow you endure passes from your tattoos to a special gland that can store it for later use. Remember, the damage itself is not getting reduced!
You gain another resource bar, called ‘Retaliation’. This bar act similarly to mana and stamina.
This resource starts at zero (0) and can store up to your half your resilience value.
The damage here stored can be used to strengthen your next blow, doesn’t matter if coming from a skill or your body. You may decide the precise amount of release.
Attuned skills can also use this resource to fuel themselves, instead of consuming mana, stamina, or health.
Changing between your forms dissipates any damage here stored.
Upgrade cost: 4 points Lvl.
Improved retaliation Lvl 1
Damage has to pass through various layers of defenses; from enchantments to skill reduction. Any combatant that wishes to exploit a fighting style based on parry and riposte will find their offenses crippled unless they bring this skill to the table.
Any damage done in retaliation is slightly increased.
Upgrade cost: 3 points Lvl.
Defender’s armor Lvl 1
A naked defender is no defender at all. The Spirit of sacrifice is often what condemns most Protection users, but one should be foolish to even consider attracting all that damage without bulk up first. This armor is specialized to offer moderate protection against all threats, regardless of their source, and help the user to respond in kind.
You can summon an elemental armor, entirely made of mana.
This armor increases your vitality and resilience, sacrificing your non-retaliated damage and dexterity.
This armor attracts enemy attacks directed at your allies. Attacks attracted in this fashion are weakened, but the stored damage isn't influenced.
Mana cost: 40% upon activation, 5% per minute after.
Upgrade cost: 6 points Lvl.
Defender dragon's fighting style Lvl 1
Defender dragons form strong bonds with their family and a selected few, pronouncing an oath of protection in their regards. These dragon's entire fighting style focuses on enduring blows and redirecting harm on themselves, returning each one with interests against their foes. Even if they lack grace, Defender dragons can be everywhere on the battlefield in the blink of an eye, or stop a tide of enemies from overwhelming them by standing still. Either way, few can prevail on those protected by these beings.
You can mark up to six beings as your bonds.
You can sense your bonds well-being and approximate position.
Your ability to store and give back damage is increased.
You can vary between two stances, called ‘swift protector’ or ‘living bastion’
In the first stance, you sacrifice your defenses to greatly enhance your speed when moving towards your bonded allies. You also burn stamina at a quickened pace, but retaliatory damage is furtherly increased.
Living bastion massively increases your defense, at the price of your ability to move from your position. In this stance, your storage is also influenced by your vitality value, which directly prevents damage, but you are unable to retaliate.
Upgrade cost: 8 points Lvl.
Points reduced to-> 261 *
Nashariel let out a satisfied grin. That’s a good Aspect! Not like the other. She thought, nodding to herself. She wasn’t proud of having bought Curse, it had been a matter of survival, but it didn’t feel… right to have it. Hopefully, her parents would have liked this one!
Nashariel looked at her points. Stats, I will assign later as usual. I just spent 80 points despite four skills being free. She chuckled to herself. The price of power, I guess. Re-reading the new fighting style, she sighed. So much for choosing Lightning for the ‘Swift stance’ to replace it with a few points… I wonder what else Lightning can do. Oh well, onto losing all my points! She cheered herself, almost skipping towards the Radiant chamber.
