Il avait suffi d’une simple flèche. Une flèche traversant les flammes juste au bon moment pour s’embraser et porter avec elle le feu destructeur.
Personne n’aurait pu dire si l’attaque avait été intentionnelle où non — même pas l’archer ayant tiré la flèche — car son esprit ne lui appartenait pas à cet instant.
Peut-être le sceau du maitre avait-il joué un rôle. Peut-être avait-il exercé une influence destructrice et malfaisante sur les actions de l’archer. Qui sait ?
Et quelles étaient les chances qu’une flèche perçant le vent à cette vitesse s’embrase si facilement ? La faute était peut-être à la magie employée pour incendier le tas de foin. La magie rendait toujours le feu plus vivace, plus affamé.
Peu importe les raisons ayant mené à ce dénouement, la flèche était en flamme et elle avait fini sa course dans une porte en bois. Une porte appartenant au refuge de la Tige d’or.
Il n’avait pas fallu longtemps aux flammes pour se répandre dans le bâtiment. Le vieux plancher de bois avait offert une voie parfaite à l’incendie.
À cet instant précis, Saira ne se doutait pas que sa vie était en danger… du moins pas pour cette raison.
Elle avait obéi à March sans une seconde d’hésitation. Toutes les femmes du refuge étaient réunies dans la cache secrète sous le plancher du réfectoire.
C’était la matrone qui avait eu l’idée de construire la trappe menant à la cachette. Bien qu’elle-même ait été une guerrière, comme elle aimait le raconter à Saira, les autres femmes n’avaient pas son entrainement. Se cacher était leur meilleure défense.
— Je savais qu’il nous attirerait des ennuis, murmura une des femmes.
C’était Julia, elle avait toujours été froide avec Saira, bien qu’elle ne le reconnaisse pas. De toutes les femmes du refuge, c’était celle qui s’était opposée le plus à la présence de March. Maintenant, Saira se demandait si elle n’avait pas eu raison. Après tout, les ennuis collaient à March comme une sangsue. Elle avait pourtant voulu croire à l’illusion d’être en sécurité parmi ses anciennes amies. Elle aurait passé sa vie là avec March si elle l’avait pu, la mère ne s’y serait pas opposée. Elle aussi voyait quelque chose en lui, quelque chose qui la poussait à le protéger.

Saira ne tenait pas en place. Elle avait déjà sauvé March une fois, alors pourquoi pas une seconde fois ? Elle se dirigea vers la trappe.
— Je vais voir ce qu’il se passe. March a peut-être besoin d’aide.
La matrone lui retint le bras.
— C’est hors de question, tu es en sécurité ici.
Ils entendirent du bruit au-dehors et Saira se libéra de la poigne de la matrone.
— Vous restez ici, dit-elle en se tournant vers le groupe de femmes, je dois m’assurer qu’il va bien.
La résolution sur son visage fit céder la matrone qui la laissa partir. Saira sortit puis prit soin de refermer la trappe derrière elle. Sa conception avait été faite avec soin. Si Saira ne connaissait pas son emplacement exact, elle n’aurait jamais deviné qu’une cachette était dissimulée sous ses pieds.
L’intérieur n’était pas éclairé et ses yeux mirent du temps à s’acclimater à la lumière du jour. Elle se dirigea à l’extérieur, cherchant March du regard. Il n’était plus là, mais lorsque Saira se tourna vers le refuge, elle vit une épaisse fumée noire émaner des cuisines.
Elle se précipita de nouveau à l’intérieur pour prévenir les autres, mais lorsqu’elle entra, la fumée avait envahi la pièce. Elle sentit une intense chaleur au-dessus d’elle et dut se couvrir le visage face à la douleur.
Elle hésita un instant. Un simple battement de cil qui fit toute la différence. Le plafond craqua et une grosse poutre en flamme céda, tombant en plein sur la trappe. Une partie de l’étage supérieur s’effondra et Saira fut prise dans les débris.
Un objet frappa son crâne et elle tomba à terre, presque inconsciente alors que les lames de bois incandescentes lui mordaient les jambes. Elle était piégée sous les décombres, la fumée épaisse lui faisant déjà tourner la tête. Sous ses pieds, elle entendit les autres femmes frapper à la porte de la trappe, elles aussi prises au piège.

Saira luttait pour rester consciente, les yeux en larmes et les poumons en feu. Elle allait mourir, elle le savait.
Les grandes portes volèrent de leur gong et Saira reprit connaissance.
Quelqu’un la libéra des débris puis la porta dans ses bras. C’était des bras forts, qu’elle avait appris à connaitre dans les moindres détails. March était là, elle vit son visage entouré de flammes dévorant le plafond à moitié détruit.
— La trappe… réussit-elle à articuler.
Mais March ne savait pas de quoi elle parlait. Il n’avait jamais été au courant qu’une telle trappe existait. Et les cris implorant des femmes coincés sous le plancher s’étaient déjà éteints.
March sortit du bâtiment et le reste de l’étage s’effondra derrière eux, rendant toute chance de secours impossible.
— Saira, où sont les autres ? demanda-t-il une fois à bonne distance.
Saira pointa un doigt vers le refuge qui ressemblait déjà plus à un tas de cendres qu’a un bâtiment. Puis elle s’évanouit.
