A tree stood alone with nothing around

The soil barren it's fruit could not pierce the ground

All alone with barely enough to survive

Though lonely were there another surely they'd die

Then one day came a farmer who began to toil

Slowly but surely he began to till and work the soil

More people came, the settlement grew large

The farmers sons had now become the ones in charge

The tree watched as the city continued to grow

It watched as the people went about to and

fro

The king would come and dine under its shade

Lovers would carve their initials into it with a blade

Space within the growing town soon grew rare

Surely they'd keep the old growth, they had to care?

One day some nobles gathered around

"Progress" they said with a smirk then came "cut it down"
