《The Love Abroad》Chapter 11

Birds are chirping, sounds of cars as children laughing. The sun shining through the slit of the curtains in my room.

I should get up but this bed is far too comfortable for my sore body. Leaning over, I grab my phone. It's 10:30am.

Crap. I was supposed to go to an art gallery with Kris this morning. I jump up, heading towards the shower when I hear laughter coming from the common room.

I open the door to see Kris, Luke and Tom watching some sort of French comedy show.

Thanks to my squeaky door, heads turned in my direction.

"Bout time you wake up! How was your night?" How much does Kris know? Did Tom tell her something? "Tom said you had a rough night. Drank too much."

My eyes dart to Tom who was avoiding eye contact. "Ummm.... yeah. I shouldn't have drank those Jager shots." I stumbled over my words, going along with whatever Tom told Kris. I look at Tom, "Did you get back to your room, okay?"

The sincerity in my voice made Luke & Kris give confused looks. "Yes," he said, lifting his eyes to mine. "Last night was...crazy. I drank too much, I wasn't thinking straight."

The air in the room became stale as the awkwardness between Tom & I was now noticed.

"Did something happen last night?" Luke asks, turning his head to look at Tom, then to me.

"No." he with a smile, "nothing with any importance."

Ouch.

That hurt.

He looks at me, bowing his head down to his feet. "So when are we leaving for lunch?" I ask, changing the subject as quickly as possible. Luke shifts his eyes to his watch. "We should leave now if we want to make our reservation."

"I need to change quickly. I could meet you guys there?"

Kris motions to Tom. "Stay with her. You know how to get there. Luke & I will get the table saved, just hurry up, okay?" Tom nods in agreement while Luke & Kris head out of the suite.

Alone again. The both of us.

I start to turn around when I hear that silky, English accent. "It was important." I stop halfway, listening for more. "What happened last night.... meant a lot to me. You mean a lot to me."

Without a word or stare, I limp my way back into my bedroom. My legs feel wobbly - my hips sore. Last night...broke me. It shattered everything. Tom and I, we're no longer what we used to be.

It's awkward.

My body shivers as the cold water trickles down to my feet. Wrapping myself with a towel, I look for something to wear. Crap, I don't know if I need to dress up or down. I thought. The only thing I can do is ask Tom.

I crack a small opening in my door, sliding my head out, baring my wet shoulders. "Tom?" He looks over in my direction. I can see his eyes widen and a grin form. "What's up?" I set out of the door, leaning on the frame, dripping wet. "Ummm..." my voice is shaky from the cold air hitting my bare skin; Tom is eyeing my body or at least the viewable of my body.

"I'm not too sure what I should wear. Do I wear dressy clothes or casual?" He walks a few steps closer to me. his eyes - a pale blue with a slight shimmer of green. "Wear whatever you want, dear."

After about 10 minutes of rummaging through my wardrobe, I settled on a pair of black, cuffed shorts & a red and white blouse with a pair of navy flats. Way to represent America, Marie.

We meet Kris & Luke at lunch, which Tom & I both tried to make less awkward by pretending that everything was okay.

In reality, everything was fucked. I could barely sit next to him without picturing him naked, the morning after a rough night of slutty, passionate sex. Ugh.

That's how the rest of the weekend was too. On our flight back to London, Kris leaned over to me asking what was going on. "You two act like you've seen each other naked or something. It's awkward, cut it out!" I look at her with guilty eyes, letting my shoulder drop in a sigh. "We did, Kris."

She shifts in the small plane seat, removing her seatbelt making the light come on. "You're joking!" The flight attendant walks over, "Miss, please put your seatbelt back on, we're about to take-off." Kris gives the attendant the bitchiest look I have ever seen, but she followed her instructions anyway.

Kris leans over and whispers in my ear, preventing Tom and Luke from eavesdropping, "You're telling me everything when we get back to the flat."

I nod and turn my gaze to the window, looking at the flaps on the wing get caught by the wind.

I should have kept my mouth shut.
