《Freshman》12. Untalented Moon

A/N:
Whooa... no PhaBeam, no ForthPha please.
No. Just no.
But here we are, in this story... having moments.
*
It's been peaceful.
Forth keeps his eye on Beam's progress everytime they have breakfast together, sharing the days they've been through.
Laughing at how the freshmen made up everything about them being boyfriends after the love proposal video, a picture of P'Forth signature saying he loves N'Beam too during the SOTUS and then the Moon courting Moon picture thing during Moon Gathering is just perfect.
With Posh and Wai still being invisible to them.
With Irin and Prae somehow making them agree to keep the ForthBeam vibe alive.
With Kongpob starting to get his hands off of Forth's way of doing his job.
With Ming concentrating in assisting Phana for the Moon Gathering.
Peaceful.
And then suddenly Phana walks into the Engineering Faculty. Walks by the side of the SOTUS field and then stops near the Hazing team tent, waiting for the Forth so he could hand the invitation he brought to Forth by himself.
Phana listened to Beam. A year is long enough for friends to not talk to each other.
When even Park is tensed, the freshmen know something is wrong. But boy! That man is super handsome!
Lam who is back from the restroom pauses his step near the tent before joining his team by the stage. "Can I help you with something, Ai'Pha?" he asks. He was by the front seat watching the man in front of him drift away from Forth. He made Forth broken hearted by having the man he loved.
Forth was not the same since. He lost twice to the same person.
Phana smiles to Lam. "I need to hand something to Ai'Forth."
"I can get it for him."
Phana shakes his head. "... and a talk too."
Lam gulps. "Okay then." Pause. "We'll just finish in another 10 minutes."
Phana nods. He is still smiling.
Not long after, Forth dismisses the SOTUS gathering and walks closer to Phana. "They say you are looking for me?"
Phana looks at Forth. He nods. He smiles awkwardly and reaches out his hand to give Forth the invitation of the Final night next Weekend. "Invitation for the Final night, for the Campus Moon runner up."

Forth blinks. He looks at the hand that is handing the invitation. If it was just the invitation, Ming could have given it to him instead. He knows there is more.
Forth takes it from Phana's hand. "Thank you," he says.
Phana nods.
Silence.
Super awkward silence.
Forth blinks.
Phana does too.
"Uhm... maybe we can have drink together again, sometime," Phana says.
Forth is surprised. "Really?"
Phana is startled at Forth's reaction. Is it too weird now? Or is it too late to make up and be friends again?
"... uhm... I mean... sure, yeah," Forth hurriedly corrects his response. "I mean... SOTUS... pfft... maybe after the closing? Yeah? We will definitely have a party. A big one."
Phana smiles. He nods.
Another silence.
"Everything's worked out?" Forth asks.
Phana looks at Forth. "You mean..."
"... with Yo, yeah...?" Forth asks.
Phana nods. "I didn't screw up," he says in a low voice.
"You bet you didn't, or I'm gonna smack your head," Forth grins.
Phana chuckles. He nods. "Yeah? Just a light smack?"
Forth nods.
"Not in my face though." Phana says playfully.
Forth laughs.
"Well, I didn't screw up. And you might not have that chance," Phana adds in a whisper.
Forth smiles. "Glad to hear it then."
Phana takes a long sigh. He just has to... "Sorry."
Forth blinks.
"I am sorry," Phana says while looking directly into Forth's eyes. "I..."
"You did nothing wrong. People choose between things. Stuff, boyfriend... big deal. That's life." Forth cuts it.
Phana looks down and then look back at Forth. "No... not for that, but for... drifting away."
Forth blinks.
"I know I'm at fault. Shouldn't have done that," Phana adds. "Sorry."
Forth smiles. "Yeah, sorry too, not for running after you at that time."
Phana laughs.
"We sound awfully like ex-boyfriends now." Forth even makes a joke out of it. "Man, Yo would be damned."
Phana cringes. "Your jokes sound more like Beam's jokes."
Forth laughs.
"Careful there, that boy is a little devil," Phana says.

"You sure? Only little? Really? I thought he's the king of the Hell himself," Forth says.
"Giving you a headache already, huh?" Phana asks.
Forth nods.
"He is your problem now, not mine anymore," Phana says teasingly.
Forth laughs.
Another silence.
"See you later, huh?" Phana asks.
Forth nods. And then he saw Lam coding him to gather for the hazer meeting. "Look, I have to..."
"Yeah, sure." Phana nods.
"See you soon, Ai'Pha." Forth makes his leave.
"See you around, Ai'Forth." Phana smiles.
Forth walks away from Phana with the invitation in his right hand and a happy feeling in his chest. What had bothered him the most besides losing Wayo to Phana was that he lost one of his close friends.
Beam walks happily towards Phana—glad that he made it, and finally had that talk with Forth. He waits until Phana finishes their talking and then he makes way to Phana who is smiling at him. He is doing SOTUS today since the Moon & Star gathering is not held on Saturdays, but SOTUS goes on for all days except Sunday.
"How was it? Everything worked out?"
Phana nods. He is kind of shy actually. He looks down as he brushes his flustered face with the back of his palm. "He'll come."
Beam laughs. Phana looks so cute. He reaches up his hands and ruffles Phana's hair. "Good job, Pha~..." he says in a sweet tone he usually uses to him. With each other.
Phana bites his lips.
"Come on, I'll treat you to a coffee latte. They have the best coffee latte here," Beam says.
"Cool." Phana rounds his arm on Beam's shoulder and ruffles his hair too. "You have dust on your hair."
"Yeah, they made me roll on the grass," Beam says.
Beam walks to the food-court wrapped in Phana's hug.
And, that makes Phana get into the freshmen's blacklist.

"Thanks," Forth says softly to Beam at the breakfast the next day.
"Hm?" Beam looks at Forth with his playful eyes.
Forth smiles. "You got me my friend back."
Beam laughs. "Is it, P'Forth? I don't remember doing anything."
"You talked to Pha, right?"
Beam just winks at Forth while drinking his water.
"You're such a perfect junior every senior wishes for, N'Beam." Forth ruffles Beam's hair.
"Okay, that's not cool, P'..." Beam is tidying his hair again. "This is early in the morning to make me look awful."
Forth laughs. "Have you any plan today?"
Beam nods. "I am going to Kit's. We will be having a beach trip before the coming busy week. The Final Campus Moon & Star Competition is on next Wednesday. And then SOTUS closing is on Friday. Ugh. So stressful."
Forth laughs. "Have you realized what your talent is?"
Beam nods. "I'll do my best, P'Forth."
"Su su na, N'Beam."
***
The Final night of Campus Moon & Star Competition is here.
The contestants perform their group dance flawlessly. And then the personal talent show begins. Singing, dancing, playing music... etc.
And, now it's Beam's turn.
Beam is walking to the stage in a slow motion. He is wearing casual clothes—a white T-shirt with thin maroon sweater rooled up to his elbow, light toned jeans, white sneakers, and a black watch to his right wrist which he holds a michrophone.
He is smiling along his steps.
Two of the jury persons are middle aged females and gosh, they can't even blink along with half of the audience.
Kongpob and his men are there.
Forth and his boys are there.
Ming and the second years are there.
All of the freshmen are there.
Beam's bestfriends and their boyfriends are there.
Beam stops in the center of the stage and looks at the audience.
"Goodnight, everyone. My name's Beam Baramee, the Moon of Engineering..."
There's whistles, yells, hysteric yells, claps... until Beam adds,
"... and I don't have any talent at all."
....
The Auditorium become dead silent.

A Virtual Invasion
An invasion from another dimension is shut down by an Empire's traitor and the world has a scant few decades to build the strength to resist a multidimensional Empire. How will the world fair when no one even knows its doom is one barred gate away? Fortunately, the traitor has a plan. Maybe with a bit of luck and planning, he can build a force to defend the world without anyone realizing it. Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.
