Due to the fact that original version was written when I was a child, there were obviously quite a few changes between the (700 page) version and the new (350 page) version. I spent two years rewriting and trying to bring the best version of this story forward. Originally, I had no story planned out and literally just wrote chapter by chapter, making it up as I went. So I had to turn aaaall of that into a cohesive story. When it came to editing, this meant cutting a few of these chapters and characters that didn't contribute to my plot. And it also meant revisiting some of my characters and their stories, descriptions, and behaviors, to make sure I was being culturally sensitive and as accurate as possible. As a young writer, I felt that it was super important for readers to see themselves reflected in the pages of my stories. I was still learning and growing--and I still am, even now, as a debut author. So I have tried my best to rewrite the book as accurately and respectfully as possible in the new version. With the help of my editorial team, this book has really evolved, and I am proud of the work we've done.
