《The Darkened Dove (SCP-049 x reader)》Chapter 19: Behind the Scenes

As you stared at the hand gripping the golden cane. Your expression shifted from shock to confusion then disgust all at the same time.

"Hello," a calm voice finally broke you from your trance.

Your eyes snapped up to his head where he slipped off his mask revealing a familiar, heart-wrenching face. You bit your cheek to keep your expression neutral. You studied his face, he smiled at you, warm and holding a hint of excitement in his eyes. He had more wrinkles than you had remembered. Makes sense, you thought. I mean how long has it been, 17? Maybe 18 years?

"You've grown so much." he almost whispered as if he could read your mind.

You stayed silent, unsure of what to say. Everything inside of you hurt, as if just his presence was enough to cause physical pain. And he did cause pain, he hurt you more than he knows, more than you could express, more than you could have told SCP-049 that one night. All that you had bottled up threatened to overflow at the sight of his familiar eyes.

He seemed to be disappointed by your lack of response, "Are you feeling alright?" His eyes studied your wounds and stopped at your finger.

"Oh, and I'm sorry about that-there was a little miss communication." He waved around his free hand as he explained.

You narrowed your eyes with a bad taste in your mouth after his weak apology. Your attention drifted away from his face switching to study the rest of the sterile, and calm infirmary. Choosing to stare at a cupboard at the far side of the room. Your eyes studied the brown wooden frame and tried to stare into one of its cracked doors.

You looked at everything but him, trying to muster up any sort of courage or stability to continue.

You knew you should probably say something to him, anything. But nothing came out. Yes, you had things to say. A lot of things actually. Still, your mouth stayed shut fighting against the wave of emotions hitting your heart.

"(Y/N)?"

You sighed closing your eyes, the pain of your finger and shoulder began to awaken again. Forcing you to physically shift in hopes to find a more comfortable position.

Unfortunately, your attempt to find comfort was in vain, all that happened was more pain and your bitten leg joined the chorus of screaming wounds.

You father let out a huff of annoyance. "You know. After all these years, I always imagined you'd be more excited to see me."

Your eyes finally snapped back open and you turned to him.

"Why?"

He blinked at you, obviously unimpressed and surprised by your question. "Why? Well, I only have been gone for-" he counted his fingers and thought, "-maybe 18 years."

"Yes, for 18 years you had us believing you were dead." You couldn't help but glare at him as he listened to you with fascination as if your anger was some sort of show.

"You disappeared without a word and left us." You had to blink a few times to keep your tears at bay.

"You abandoned me and mom... For what?"

At the mention of your mother his look fascination faded away. A different expression took over his features. The corners of his mouth fell further, and there was a heaviness that entered his eyes.

"I didn't want to. I still did what I could for you two. I had to," his eyes drifted to the floor, "it wasn't easy to leave her," he whispered under his breath as if you weren't sitting right there. "Or you," he added.

A hard pang hit your heart when you heard him whisper. You didn't let it show though, instead you but your cheek until the feeling passed.

"And as for you, I really did all I could. I sent you off to college! Doing all that you loved and more!"

No, I did what YOU loved... And what I used to love... You thought maintaining a steady glare.

He raised an eyebrow at your glare, "Oh, come on. If I hadn't, you wouldn't even be here right now!"

Your glare shifted into an incredulous stare as you lay in a hospital bed with major injuries that still threatened your life. He had to be joking, what father would want their child to be here.

But then again this was your father you were talking about. Taking into consideration how many times he had completely ignored your needs, whether it is psychological, emotional, or physical for something he wanted, it wasn't too outrageous of a scenario. And in this situation he had somehow managed to damage all three categories. You gripped the blanket of the hospital bed as you thought about your situation. Just because it's normal for him... It still doesn't make it right... Not at all.

You shook the thoughts out of your head and continued your questions, "Why do you want me here?"

He looked at you in surprise, "Why wouldn't I?" A smile snuck back on his face. "I want to share my work with you!"

Your brow furrowed, he never wanted to 'share his work' with you before. If anything, he shooed you away every chance he got.

"Well, now that you're old enough to understand."

You fought back the emotion that statement riled up in you. Is that why he left? Because you were a child? A bitterness sunk into your gut, making your stomach hurt.

"And who knew it would be so difficult to get you here." He mused rubbing his chin. "I mean I had an escort for you and everything."

"Excuse me?" You questioned again. An escort!? Was he talking about that group that tranquilized me and SCP-049? "Why did you have them tranquilize me?" You said jumping to conclusions with bitterness now entering your words.

"Oh! No no, Not them." He shook his head and almost seemed more irritated all of a sudden. "They were my last resort when the original failed twice and apparently lost track of you for two whole days." Your father rolled his eyes.

Your eyebrows furrowed as you listened, you couldn't think of seeing an escort who apparently tried to take you to your father. "Who, was the-"

"Here. Let me show you." He interrupted. He lifted his cane up a couple inches off the ground only to immediately push it back down making a loud clicking noise.

The room went silent as you watched the scene play out before you. Nothing happened for a few moments, until a familiar gurgling noise echoed through the room. The noise alone was enough to make your heart pound against your chest. You scrambled up in bed ignoring the pain that it caused you and stared at the floor as it slowly dissolved into a dark black goop.

A mass began to rise from the pool and a grotesquely familiar face formed from the liquid, forcing your eyes to widen. In seconds SCP-106 was fully out of the floor. Hunching over, it towered over your father and dripped globs of goop all over the floor making a mess in the once white and sterile room.

"You remember this guy?" Your face contorted to a look of both confusion and fear as your eyes shifted from your father then to SCP-106. You swallowed, fighting to keep your visibly trembling limbs still.

Your father smiled, "I'll take that as a yes. Like I said SCP-106 was supposed to be your escort."

"But-it attacked me," you eventually squeaked out, your experience in his dimension coming back to mind.

"Nope. You just interpreted it wrong. It didn't hurt you in the slightest. Yes, it tried to send you to it's pocket dimension but it was so it could pull you out here." His face contorted into something you could only describe as whimsical.

You stared hard at your father taking in the information. SCP-106 wasn't trying to hurt you? Your eyes widened further, the piles of fresh dead bodies, the doors that should have killed you, and SCP-106 didn't suffocate you when it had the chance. It chased you yet never used any lethal attacks. It had all these abilities that you witnessed when it attacked SCP-035 and SCP-049, but it never used them towards you.

"But you escaped." He put his hand back on his chin, "Which is honestly really impressive, you escaped faster than I would have assumed." He stared at you with a proud expression. You shifted slightly under his gaze. As sad as it was, the expression had been foreign to you.

"Oh, and it was also supposed to protect you from other SCPs since the breach got in the way, but somehow they overpowered it." His face contorted into a disappointed scowl as he looked back at SCP-106. You flinched at the expression, there it was, now he seemed all too familiar to you. More connections were made in your mind, when it attacked SCP-035 and SCP-049 it mouthed something towards you and only you. Your stomach started to sink as now you could add this to the list of times that your father did something that could have threatened your life.

"So... You sent that thing after me?"

"Yes. It's the only SCP I have with the ability I needed." He explained pitting his other hand on the cane.

After his answer your face fell further, a sick feeling entered your stomach. That implies- "You mean... You have others?"

His eyes lit up at your question, "Of course! And after the breach I've collected even more." He smiled with excitement entering his face, you began to feel dizzy.

"How-?" You stared at him incredulously, somehow getting one SCP is hard enough but multiple? And under the foundation's nose? Under the council's noses? It was impossible. Your stomach felt heavy the more you thought about it, but if there was anyone who could... It would be your father. Once he got his mind set on something- well let's just say you wouldn't want to get in his way.

"Oh, I needed a lot of help and a lot of time, that's why I had to leave for so long." He explained.

You didn't know what to say. All you could do was stare at your father with so many thoughts going through your mind. Emotions flooded your mind and body all sad, hurt and angry. You blinked a couple times trying to come to terms with what was happening. Then all at once a wave of realization and anger hit you.

"You caused it didn't you." You said almost whispering.

"Caused what?"

Your body seemed to clench as hundreds of faces, screaming voices and tears played out in your mind. Hundreds of guards dead and mutilated in horrible ways after doing all they could to protect the world. Everyone who cared for the world and was willing to sacrifice their life... Their Sanity to protect it. All gone, whiped off the planet, for what?

"You started the breach..." You whispered.

"Huh? You're too quie-"

"YOU! You caused the breach!!" You yelled sitting up further in bed the anger and adrenaline coursing through your veins surpassing the pain it caused.

His eyebrows furrowed at your reaction, "I wouldn't be so quick to point fingers (y/n)." He retorted with a stern voice.

Your eyes narrowed as he continued. "Technically, I did not cause the breach. Yes, I had one planned but not now. We weren't ready yet. Not prepared." His hands gripped his cane tighter as he explained.

You blinked with anyone else you wouldn't have believed them, but the disappoint and irritation in your father's eyes and face made you think otherwise. He was too genuinely distressed to be lying. Your shoulders relaxed slightly. Sure, apparently he had planned to cause a breach, but at least he didn't go through with it. Yet.

"Also, if it wasn't for the sudden breach your escort could have had a better chance," his eyes traveled back to yours, "probably."

"Even so you at least still got here in one piece." He tapped his cane again. Apparently excusing SCP-106 as it quickly retreated back into the floor. Your anger was slowly depleting only to be replaced with so many questions and waves of pain returning to your body. If it wasn't your father who caused the breach... Than who? Or what? Was it truly just a coincidence...?

Your father scoffed, snapping your attention back to him, "No thanks to any SCP though. Maybe I need to rethink my tactics, they could use some more refinements."

Your brows furrowed trying to understand what he meant. Only for an uncomfortable feeling washed over you at the thought. Refinements? And you wouldn't have made it out alive if it weren't for SCPs... Or one SCP. An ominous premonition touched you when SCP-049 came to mind.

"What do you mean, 'refinements'?"

Again, your fathers face lit up after your question.

"I'll show you." Taking his left hand off of the cane he excitedly picked it up and turned away from you. "Come with me and I'll show you everything!"

You stared at him in surprise and hesitantly moved to get up. You gasped when you tried to move your burning leg. Pulling down the covers you bit your cheek again as you stared down at the hospital gown you were wearing. Better than the bloodstained oversized jacket and tattered jeans, but you weren't about to walk around mooning everyone.

You dropped the blanket flinching from your injured finger. Your father must have noticed you struggle because he had already stopped halfway across the room to reassess your condition. He scratched his chin as he stared at your injuries.

"You know.. I can help you with that, and I can show you just a glimpse of my work." With that he turned away, leaving you alone.

You stared at the now closed door. Everything your father had told you playing in your mind. You felt nauseous from stress, hunger and emotion. The thought of 'refined' SCP's came to mind again. The thought bothered you.

Even though your father was about to introduce you to one, technically you had already seen one and you already didn't like it. Honestly, it still haunted you. The little white bugs from yesterday, that man explained to you that they had been 'modified' by his boss. The more you thought about it the more angry and scared you became, Why would ANYONE need or want terrifying insects that can infest a person through any opening?

You took a deep breath in the silence, trying to clear your mind so that you could actually process what all was happening. Your mind wandered back to yesterday, horrific and vivid memories immediately rushed into your mind and lit your finger and shoulder on fire once again.

The silence outside of you didn't last long, barely a minute passed before the door opened again. Revealing Dr. Snow pushing in a cart.

And every last hint of peace you had vanished at once

Your breathing hitched in your throat and your heart raced. The world around you seemed to disappear as you stared at the silver utensils on the tray.

You gripped your blanket too panicked to acknowledge how your finger screamed from how tight you held the blanket. The closer he approached the less you could breath. Without thinking you tried to run. Hopping out of the hospital bed and scrambling as far away from the man as you could.

You wanted to scream, you wanted to run. You didn't even notice the panicked and confused look on Dr. Snow's face.

You backed up as you stared at a glass box full of those little white bugs sitting on the tray. You could hear him talking but you didn't listen. You backed up until you touched the cold wall behind you.

Your heart raced faster; you were trapped again. You could feel the walls closing in around you and you were alone. Your throat closed as you tried breath. You took another step back only to fall from your injured leg.

"(Y/N)!" He was yelling at you now. You had to escape somehow. You tried to get up but failed again.

He pushed the cart aside and- you had to blink a couple times when you finally got a good look at it. You could have sworn...

"(Y/N), Please Let's calm down, you're ok." Backing closer to the wall again your mind slowly began to calm. Looking back towards the cart again you noticed that it didn't have the glass cage on top. It didn't have anything you swore you had seen. All at once, Dr. Snow's voice began to sound calmer to you.

Your throat loosened and your mind began to relax. You heart was still racing as you stared at the man slowly kneeling beside you. "Just take a deep breath... You're ok," he sounded so calm, you were beginning to question if he even had yelled at you.

You listened and took a deep breath, calming down you realized how you were acting. You felt both confused and embarrassed seeing the concern in Dr. Snow's eyes. Reaching your hand up to your face you felt tears streaming down from your eyes. You didn't realize you had started crying.

"Are you ok?" He asked still speaking with a soft voice. Your body began to relax as your panic slowly passed.

You shook your head no in response, you studied Dr. Snow he knelt only a foot a way with eyes were full of concern. You swallowed before you spoke again.

"I'm sorry.. I don't know what got into me."

"Its ok," he studied your bandages and only stood when he could ensure there was no damage, "Are you ready to come back? I brought you some food."

You nodded with your stomach grumbling at the mere mention of food. Dr. Snow held out his hand to you and helped you stand. Shaky you stood back up and let Dr. Snow lead you back to the bed.

"Did I do something to upset you?" He suddenly asked after you had relaxed back in bed.

You opened your mouth only to close it again rethinking what you should say. You hadn't expected something as small as someone pushing a silver cart would trigger you so much.

"Maybe," you said unsure and staring at the now obviously harmless object.

"Oh, I'm sorry." He said with sincerity in his voice.

You glanced up at him, "Its ok." You hesitated before continuing. "Maybe, next time could you not bring a cart?"

---------

"I promise. You'll feel good as new in only a day."

Your eyes stared hesitantly at your father, then back to the red pill on your empty food tray. He had been very excited to bring it for you, even going as far as to place the pill on a beautiful little lace coaster.

"A pill?"

"Not just any pill, have you ever heard of SCP-500?"

"Umm, I don't think so." You were now even more skeptical of the pill.

"Well, SCP-500 is a pill that can immediately heal any disease, illness or injury. The only drawback is that they are in limited supply and attempting to duplicate them makes the duplicates weaker and weaker." He explained gesturing to the pill.

"Well," He said pride entering his voice. "I was able to find a way to create more! Just a perfect and effective as the originals."

You stared hard at your father and then at the pill. "The only thing I have admittedly not perfected yet is time. It takes at least a day for them to completely take effect. But from all my tests it has not failed me yet."

He looked to you for a response, his smile wavering when you remained uncertain. Staring at the red pill before you. As soon as he had called the pill an SCP you were admittedly even less likely to try it. Even if it could possibly heal you.

"Go on." He finally said trying to get you to eat the modified SCP.

"I don't know..."

"Oh come on!" You flinched when he suddenly raised his voice. He blinked at your reaction then took a deep breath and tried again, "Come on. I promise it won't hurt you."
