《Gallinus》22- Gel Snake

After our strategic retreat, under the pressure of a pack of wild boars, I finally begin to analyse the place where we are.
It feels like we’re inside an extremely spacious cave, or maybe a ridiculously large maze.
I cannot distinguish the place correctly, as I only see stone walls and torches attached to them.
What kind of challenge is this? We are trapped in a maze and we must find a way out, or maybe kill a few monsters… Maybe find a specific monster…
- … Galizé, what do you think of this place? – Suzy asks me doubtfully.
… You didn’t listen to me?!
- I just heard you asking what kind of challenge this is…
… Wait, so Suzy can’t always hear my thoughts?
- Ah, I wish I could hear them all… - She speaks a little disappoint.
That way, I decide to try to find out why Suzy can’t hear my thoughts.
And when I think deeply about it, it is exactly the moment when Suzy stops listening to me, in other words, she cannot hear my deepest thoughts.
In a way, I feel like I gain a little privacy.
- Leaving that aside, Galizé, what do you think about this place?
I believe we are in a maze and there is most likely to be a way out? Since if we were to kill monsters, they would send us to an arena.
- Yes… I would like to know why they don’t say anything about what to do on each floor.
Well, considering the person who is running this tower is like me, then that’s because… It’s more fun.
- …
Anyway, after that brief conversation, we started walking through the maze again.
Still… Aren’t these corridors too wide?
- It is probably because of the animals of some competitors. – Suzy says normally.

I see… Wait, are there people with animals that big?!
Each corridor has space for five huge boars, so surely the animal with this size will be something that we will not be able to face.
How have I not seen such a big animal before!?
- That’s why I said probably… Or maybe there’s a monster this big in the maze.
… Well, let’s just be cautious.
For safety, Suzy walks close to the wall, watching the surroundings closely.
In the meantime, I try to see something in this darkness.
Seriously, why is my vision so bad in the dark?
- Isn’t it because of your kind? I heard that all Gallinus don’t see in low light.
So, I have such weakness…
Even though I can’t see the middle of the corridor, since the torches only illuminate the walls, I still see the colours.
They are not a light effect or anything I can explain.
I don’t know if my brain starts trying to create a way to associate them, but those colors start to look like clouds.
When I look at Suzy, I can see a cloud covering her body and another cloud inside.
The outside has a shade of purple, indicating her insecurity, while the inside is a blue-white…
… Hey, Suzy, have you ever heard of a skill that can read other people’s moods?
- … Read the mood? No… How could such a skill exist? There is no element that can do something like this.
So, something like seeing Qi? Or maybe the cultivation?
- I think I’ve heard something about being able to see the cultivation… You are asking this, because you can see Qi, right?
You guessed? Probably because of the doors on the first floor…
- Yes… If it weren’t for that, we would have been stuck there.

As we talk about my vision, something strange start to happen.
The cloud in front of Suzy start to get darker… And its tone changes to gray.
The further she walks, the darker it became.
… Suzy, could you stop walking a little?
- Why?
Stop now!!
Just as Suzy stopped walking, a blade, like a guillotine, pass in front of her face and hit the ground.
We both stood there, in a stupor for a few seconds.
- T-There are traps here!? – Suzy exclaims.
… Hey, I think it’s time we left, don’t you think?
- Y-Yes, let’s ask to leave…
As soon as we decide, the color on her right quickly turned a dark gray.
Coming right!
As soon as she heard me, Suzy jumps to the left. The wall is on our right, so we ended up going to the center of the corridor.
Something pass quickly by where we were and stops only when it reaches the end of the corridor and hit the wall, more than 20 meters away.
What is there is a double-cut ax, somewhat worn, but certainly with great resistance, since it hit the wall to the point of cracking it and remains in great condition.
Across the corridor, you can hear footsteps of someone approaching.
Just when we want to leave, someone comes…
- To throw an ax that way… He must be very strong.
As soon as the person approaches one of the torches on the wall, I can see what he looks like.
He wears armor made of raw leather and steel. His head is protected by an iron helmet, with holes for the eyes and nose-down opening.
In his left hand is a sword about one meter long, made of raw iron. He probably carried the ax in his right hand, so there is no weapon in it.
His image reminds me exactly of a being in my world.
This… Isn’t he a Viking?!
- … Galizé, what do we do?
Do you want to try to fight a Nordic Viking!? Just run!
But as soon as Suzy turns to run, something appears from across the corridor.
It is a boy riding a huge snake.
That snake is so big that it hardly fits in the corridor.
… How did I not see this animal on the first floor!?
- That’s because he was much smaller before.
How so?
- This is a rare animal that grows when in the water.
Every time I learn something new about this world, I feel I lose some of my common sense.
Looking back, there is a Viking who tried to kill us seconds ago while in front, there is a giant snake that grew up in the water.
Watching the snake, perhaps because I had lost any hope, only one thought came to my mind.
… I prefer the dinosaurs that grew in the water more.

Overgrowth
I never thought I'd be killed by butterflies. But here I am... Edmon Valli was a smuggler, before a freak storm threw him off course and stranded him on a desert island smack in the middle of an uncharted monster zone. Trying his best to survive, or possibly even escape, he stumbles across the find of a lifetime: an unclaimed dungeon crystal. This is a dungeon-ish story, but without reincarnation or transmigration. I started it as a whim for NaNoWriMo so I may drop it any time after that... or I might not. My current plan is to write until I can reach some sort of conclusion and call it 'volume one'. I hope someone enjoys reading it for now! All comments, corrections, and criticism welcome.
