《Gallinus》16- Lights

The time passed and soon the competitors started to move.
...Just what do we do now?!
In fact, even if I start thinking about ways to escape, the only person who can do something for me is Suzy.
So, instead of thinking, I just decide to wait and see what she is going to do.
Suzy starts walking towards Maria and Gabel, who are also participating in the competition.
Looking at them from a distance, it seems they too are lost.
- Maria, Gabel, I found you! - Suzy exclaims towards the two.
Seeing we are approaching, Maria, who had her falcon on her shoulder, says.
- Suzy, we’re looking for a way out of this place, do you have any ideas?
- None. - Suzy answers frankly.
- As expected... - Maria murmurs.
These two must know each other well...
- Don’t worry, I’ll find a way out! - Says Gabel, carrying his armadillo.
- It would be more convincing if you, at least, had a plan. - Maria speaks, smiling.
- And do you have any?!
- For now, I’m going to test something.
At that moment, the hawk on her shoulder takes to the sky.
- What it is doing? - Suzy asked, looking at the hawk.
- I can see how high this floor is... - Maria speaks, watching the hawk too.
Time passed and the falcon continued to rise... It rose so high that i could barely see it.
- ... I think there is no end. - Maria murmurs.
A few minutes later, the falcon begins to return. It’s probably exhausted from flying so much.
- Well, I have no more ideas. - Maria says, as soon as her falcon returns. - Let’s walk a little and look for some way...
At that point, as we walked, a person started jumping through the air.
It was a really sudden movement, to the point everyone nearby stopped walking and watched her.
... Isn’t that the girl I saw on the sign up?

She was the girl who had scary eyes.
- What is that girl doing?
Many people have asked themselves this, but I, on the other hand, perceive something different.
She was heading straight for a small cluster of white lights. It wasn’t much, but they were together in a very strange way.
What is it?
At that moment, the girl goes through the lights and... Disappears with the white lights.
...Was that the door?!
Observing the surroundings, I notice the competitors extremely confused and some running quickly to where the girl disappeared.
But, even if they perfectly hit the place where she disappeared, none of them managed to go with her, since the colors disappeared from that place.
- ... How did that girl disappear!? - Gabel exclaims, surprised.
- She must have discovered the secret of this floor... - Maria says, while she seems to be thinking seriously.
- Should we go to where she disappeared? - Suzy asks.
- Better no, since I’m without my popcorn cart.
...Why do you need a cart for that?
- Why do you need it? - Gabel says exactly what I think
- I only know how to communicate with clients when I talk to strangers. - She explains proudly.
What an unexpected uselessness...
- Maria, how did you manage to register? - Suzy asks.
- I sold 2 bags of popcorn to the attendant while making it. - Maria speaks, as if it were something normal.
I don’t know if I see her with respect, for being able to sell popcorn in the middle of registering for such an important event, or if I think of her as a fool who cannot speak to strangers properly...
While I think about it, the three decide to continue walking, because the place for investigation is with many people and the only one who seems to be good at deduction is Maria...
In the end, we just discovered a very deep river and the sun never changed position, standing still as if it was dawn.

I already know how to get out of this floor, but I wonder if these three will be able to find out...
As we spent a lot of time walking, a few more people managed to get to the next floor.
- I don’t understand!! What should we do!? - Gabel exclaims.
- Calm down a little, Gabel, we don’t need to be in a hurry. - Say Suzy.
This isn’t a competition? So I believe it would be good for you to go faster...
- Yes, we must remain calm... Hm? - Maria speaks as we walk, until she realizes something.
Since they don’t know where to go, they decided to follow the horizon, heading towards the sun, but it was getting hotter and hotter as we approached.
- I think it’s my limit... - Suzy says, sweating.
- I also can’t go any further. - Says Gabel.
The temperature here is really high...
I don’t know why, but it looks like I’m very resistant to heat.
- ... You two, star here, I will continue. - Maria speaks while picking up her falcon, seeming to protect it from the sun and its heat.
I would say this is useless, but as there is magic in this world, I don’t know if it works anymore.
Anyway, I can see how far she’s going.
Further ahead is a cluster of red lights.
She managed to find a door... Too bar it’s too hot for us.
As soon as Maria arrives at the lights, she disappears, but this time the lights remained in the same place.
- She found the door... - Suzy mumbles.
- Damn it, we’re left behind! We need to find another way soon!! - Gabel exclaims, running in another direction.
Suzy chases after him, also wanting to find a way to go up to the next floor.
Neither of them though about trying to go where Maria disappeared, because the heat was so high in that place, so even the floor seemed to be burned.
...I think I better help this girl, or we’ll be stuck here forever.
For this, I waited until she got close to a portal and then pressed my claws on her shoulder.
The pain made her instantly stop her movements and look at me.
- Galizé, Why did you do that!? Don’t you see I’m busy!
Busy? You’re just running around, not thinking about what to do!
I wish I could tell her this, but it’s impossible, so I just jump off her shoulder and look at the place with a cluster of white lights.
From what I realized, there are four types of passages represented the four elements.
Red is in the sun.
White is in the air, changing with every moment it is encountered.
Azul is in the depths of the river.
And the brown is under the earth.
Because of the brown, there are several holes scattered across the plain and one of them is in front of me.
...The white lights are right over this hole... I need to find a way to make Suzy jump into it.
Suzy approaches me, who was watching the hole, and took me in her hands.
- What’s it? Is there something in there? - She asks, looking at the hole, but because of the depth, she can’t see anything. - It’s too deep...
At that moment, a person carrying a bottle that appears to be alcohol, arrives at the side of the hole.
He is a young man apparently 20 yeas old, his hair is a little long and is tied in a ponytail. His clothes are tattered and he seems to have drunk a lot.
- I give up... I can’t take this place anymore!
And then he jumps into the hole... And ends up going through the white lights.
... Of all the holes, why did you go to jump in this one!!!

A Standard Model of Magic
The world ended, and magic came back. The part our parents didn't expect, was for Science to break on reentry. Twenty years after the apocalypse, with our nations dismantled and hidden continents unearthed, a new generation has grown up in the wreckage of 21st century civilization. For us, the fantastic is at our doorstep and we have had no choice but to fight back. Meanwhile, the laws of nature bend and break at the whims of immortal gods, all of which are now dead and none of which are content to stay that way. But we cannot afford to give up. We are the stewards of a rewritten century, in which a little luck and a whole lot of magic might make anything possible – maybe even a world better than the one we lost. A Standard Model of Magic is a complete overhaul of my old story A Storm in the Fall. I'm afraid I was unhappy with the LitRPG elements, which I don't mind reading, but I apparently loath writing. Sorry. Once I'd made the choice to decouple the story from the OF that inspired it and reconfigure the magic system to my satisfaction, little of the original plotline survived. I will be salvaging most of my original characters, and I will keep some elements which are endemic to the genre, but that is all. I don't have an update schedule which I can commit to yet, but I will try to maintain a weekly pace.(This is currently RoyalRoad exclusive, since I'm lazy. If you find it posted elsewhere, it wasn't me and it wasn't with permission) If you're interested, I've set up a discord.
