“Being a sheep is such a pleasure.”
Along the steep, grass-covered hillside, sheep stood loosely apart from each other, eating grass, minding their businesses. A grew sheep, with the function name ‘CAST’, took a bite of the oily grass below it, and chewed it slowly, but every movement of its chaw resulted in a few purple sparks generated from its mouth.
“Grass tastes great,” CAST laid down onto the grassland. Suddenly, the land under it liquified and became the ‘water’ that appeared before. CAST rolled itself from side to side, whenever the liquid became too far from its contact, it remerged as the original grassland, “Shame that I can’t pet myself…”
A spark popped from CAST’s fur and disappeared into the air. It stopped rolling, its mussels tensed as if waiting for approaching danger. After a few seconds, CAST relaxed back on its back, “Well, Hetzer 1 failed. The surprise element is no longer there.”

“Mehhhh~~~” CAST turned its head slightly sideways and took another bite of grass, “her power function was still active, of course, the Hetzer can’t handle her punch.” CAST rolled over again, with its belly facing the ground, “Based on her reaction speed, I should probably adjust the manoeuvrability higher. More armour? Meh! Increase the hunger factor a bit!”

“Glop glop glop,” Tann finished her fifteenth can of energy drink of the day she, then she threw the empty can into a plastic bag that is filled with all the other drinks that she drank. She already had more than three heart attacks, busted more than a few thousand capillaries in her brain and her eye, but her recovery function was able to cope with all that.
“Now I can do whatever I wanted,” she laughed historically and pressed her left hand into her heart with force, “heart! Did you hear that? I’m going to drink as much as I want and you are not going die out like in the other world!”
Tann kept on laughing and popped open another Monster Energy. As she laughed, caffeine-filled, cloudy teardrops rolled down her cheeks. She rubbed away her tears and poured the green liquid down her throat.

“Ah!” Tann made a small gasp and leaned back against the unpainted concrete wall. She felt lucky that the ‘Northern Side’ have existed in her world.
Northern Side: Formerly acted as the Department of Foundation Studies of Qchong University. However, during Test Run 470 conducted by Tann and co, the Department of Foundation Studies was sieged by anti-government rioters and students were taken, hostage. During the police surrounding of the department, the rioters made use of the department’s lab and tried to create explosives, but, during this process, an accident occurred and the entire department was set on fire. Soon, the fire spread (with the help of Phurder who increase the combustion rate function) to nearby housings, resulting in heavy casualties. Thus, the ruin was regarded as the Northern Side both within the simulation and among the CREATORS.
Tann stood up and patted her butt to remove the ashes, then, she picked up her Nova and emptied and refilled its ammo chamber.
Cluck. BAM!
She fired at a broken window across the room which shattered completely by the powerful shotgun blast.
“Why did he force me to do a shooting test!” she said, pumping the empty shell out of the gun.
BAM!
She shot a concrete pillar, as a result, a large piece of concrete flew off together with a cloud of dust.
Cough. Cough. That was a bad move. Tann sneezed quietly and pumped another time.
“What should I shoot at this time,” she walked towards the broken window and looked outside. The street was still covered in dark ashes and broken glass from Test Run 470. Tann rested her gun on the window frame and shoot at the trunk of a dead tree.
BAMMMmmmmmmmmmm…
The blast of the gun echo through the ruins, like the cry of a ghost.
Click. Tann put on the safety and laid down her gun against the wall. Instead of reaching for new shotgun shells, she took out her keyboard, “The range is still too short.”
“Ummm…” she put her hands softly on the keys and pondered, “what’s the range increase function again?”
Suddenly, Tann realized something import: she didn’t know the function name for the shotgun.

“What is it again?” she rubbed her chin rapidly, “‘HeavysG’? No, no, no. ‘GsG’? Nah, that’s for pistols!”
She picked up the Nova in a panic, and searched for its label, “Here it is… Let me give it a try.”

“YAY!” Tann cheered.
#Function__01_range_

Tann swiped her keyboard aside and stood up with the shotgun again, she pointed at another window that is located more than thirty meters away and she removed the safety.
Click!
“Damn it,” Tann turned around and reached into an open paper box and took out a few red cylindrical shells. She pressed one of the shells into the feeder and pushed it in, then, followed the rest in with similar motions.
Clutch!
She held her breath and looked through the iron sight.
BAMMMmmmmmm…Clack!BAMMMmmmmmmm…Clack!BAMMMmmmmmm…Clack!Click!
After the muzzle smoke faded away, she searched for her results: the window remained intact with a few shell holes around it.
“What?” she breathed heavily.
BAMMMmmmmmm…
“What the hell?!” she loaded a few more shots into the gun, “The program is already changed!”
She sat back down and dragged herself the keyboard, “What are all the shotgun functions? I remember we played with them a lot before.”
The virtual monitor displayed all of the ‘StuG’ functions, Tann inspected them closely one by one.

System:_spreadpattern__on
“Aha, now you should be shooting where I aim at,” Tann said to the shotgun, she swung the barrel out of the window and pointed at a distant metal barrel.
As Tann pressed down the trigger, two explosions happened simultaneously, one caused the firing of the shell, while the other caused by the bullets hitting the barrel. Although it didn’t make sense for these two events to occur at the same time if we look at Tann’s programs we’ll get a better understanding. Firstly, she entered the code: #Function__01_range_. The term ‘ray’ stands for changing the bullets from being regarded as a moving particle to beams with ‘infinite speed’ that trigger with the first object that stands in the vector direction of the beam. However, this would not affect the damage of the bullet, instead, the bullets literally ‘teleport’ from the gun to the first barrier that the beam impact and its force are the same as being fired from point-blank range.
On the barrel the bullet holes scattered closely within a small circle. This is due to the ‘spread pattern’ function. Originally the pellets all travel linearly from the gun at many angles to the initial line, meaning that as they travel further, they become further apart creating a large spread. So, by change the spread pattern to a cylinder, the pellets no longer obey the normal linear motion, instead, they only spread to a fixed range, and then continues straight within that range, thus creating a cylinder shape as they travel to the target.
“Nice,” Tann fully loaded her weapon and walked back to her bags and equipment. She reached into her bag and took out a small monitor and pressed a button on its top left corner. A split-screen display of hallways appeared: Tann had installed CCTV cameras all over the building.
“Now, I just need to wait here my guest to…” she suddenly remembered something which caused her to reach into her pocket. In her hand, a small brass-cased pocket mirror appeared. Tann fixed the gaze of her orange eyes onto her reflection from the mirror. She held her breath, waiting for her hair to start turning blue again. For a split second, she felt as if her the light blue shades in her golden hair had turned darker, but the next second, everything remained the same.
Tann sighed and put the mirror back. She drew out the large handgun from its case and put it to her pistol holder on her waist and hang an ammo belt of shotgun shells across her chest.
Clutch!
“I can survive!”

Tur Briste
A Druid cultivation novel. Borrows concepts from Wuxia and Xianxia but using Druid myth and lore. More on this at the bottom. Crow is son of Maddox, a Druid with an ancient bloodline and a people with a story spanning toward the beginning of time. Cursed, unfated, and a heap of bad luck have brought him only pain and suffering, but nothing will stop him. Nothing can stop him. A son of Maddox doesn’t bow his head. A son of Maddox understands that only a man with roots, with something to lose, will fight until the last drop of blood leaves his body. The Draoidh were once a proud people. They were both respected and hated for their form of righteousness. Power wasn’t something they gained through the might of their arms, but through intelligence. Their fall was all the more disheartening for the weaker cultivators. The tens of thousands of years that followed… chaos reigned. They forced Draoidh until most fled to the lower realms, nearly wiped out and exhausted. They went into hiding and became known as the Druids of the Oak. The Druid Order wasn’t the powerhouse it had been, and only nine of the major clans survived the calamity. Their bloodline weakened, as well as their prestige. Even the remaining clans fought amongst each other. Already on the decline and near extinguished, the Maddox clan can only struggle for survival, but their foundation wasn’t a joke. Weakened, but not weak. The other clans will understand this difference soon enough. Tur Briste, the Shattered Tower, awaits Crow’s ascension. Reaching the upper realms is only the first step in reestablishing the Draoidh. The Druids of the Oak remembered every betrayal and grievance, and they’ll return to power and reclaim what once belonged to them. The upper realms may have forgotten, but the Druid Order has not. Please Note:1) This is harem story. There are only a few chapters with sex, and it’s not a focus of the story. I’ll only add graphic sex if I feel the story needs it, so not gratuitously. Either way, Crow has several women. This is in line with Druid/Celtic history, and harems/reverse harems were an accepted part of their culture. Further, they had open marriages, meaning the man or woman could end their marriage at any time. While it was still a patriarchy, women had almost equal power. They were a very progressive culture. 2) There is a period of a 30-50 chapters where Crow loses the ability to cultivate like a Druid so he adopts an eastern body cultivation method for a while. This is temporary, but some people feel it’s misleading, so I am pointing it out ahead of time. I promise, the Druid stuff comes back, and 90% of the lore/myths/creatures/gods are all related to Druid/Celt/Irish/Scottish history. 3) I use many original names, most of which are in Gaelic or Irish. In the story, I refer to this language as Ancient. I enjoy all kinds of folklore and myths, so I encourage you to google those original names as they arrive. I give some background on them at the end of the chapter in my author’s note. 4) I use Ogham runes a lot, these are like the Druid alphabet, and they based each rune on a sacred tree so they also have symbolism associated with them. Again, feel free to google that too. It’s pretty neat stuff. Quick Translations:Draoidh = DruidTur Briste = Shattered Tower or Broken Tower Release Schedule:As of Oct 1, 2021- 3 chapters released every Sunday (May have up to two bonus chapters)- Side character chapters… this might be bonus chapters I release through the week. So they won’t count toward the 3 chapters on Sunday.- Please understand I work full time, have two kids, and can’t spare as much time as I’d like toward my writing. Maybe in the future I can switch to doing this full time, but for now 3 chapters is a comfortable pace for me. Lastly… I very much appreciate all my readers and thank you for allowing me to entertain you!
8 127On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.
