《Alit》Day 7

Steven woke up early with his family to go to church with them. Every Sunday their small-town church is filled with almost the entire town. The pastor was late to the service and comes running in “Sorry, everyone, I was at the hospital and one of our members is in critical condition. Gus Mulch needs our prayers” the pastor says while bowing his head for a prayer. Stevens family sat in the middle a few rows behind the Hansons. Marcus looked back at Steven to see how he was dealing with it. The message that day was about forgiveness but Steven couldn't help but laugh at it forgiveness? Are all actions forgivable? There has to be a line.
After church everyone gathers downstairs in the lobby for refreshments. The people always chat about the local town gossip. Marcus and Steven step away from everyone to talk alone. “How are you feeling, man? What are you going to do if your parents find out you were involved?”
Me? He was trying to beat me up and I dodged. This wasn’t my fault and he deserved everything that happened.”
Marcus backed away after not ever seeing Steven act like this. He was always kind natured and even cared about what happened to Gus. This wasn’t like him.
Steven walked away from Marcus not in the mood to talk about it. He knew he didn’t do anything wrong and that Gus got what was long coming for him. Steven needed some air and told his dad he was going to walk home. After walking about a block from the church Gus’s goons catch up to him. “We know you pushed him in that fire on purpose and you better believe we will get revenge for him” they all gather around him so there is no place to go. Still while circling him they lead him to an alley no one would be able to see them in. Once they get back there, Gus’s right hand man Roger pulls out a switch blade while the other 3 hold him down. They push Steven down while Roger hovers over him and places the blade to Stevens neck. “You can’t push me in a fire now, can you?” Roger says. Right before his blade touches Stevens neck, he freezes. After a few seconds the goons wonder what’s going on. Right then Roger’s face turns purple and he falls over slamming his face into the pavement. Steven now had the knife in his hand he could be my first offering he thought but instead he throws the knife down and runs out of the alley.

After a few minutes of walking Steven gets to his road and starts walking down it when something in the woods catches his eyes. He began walking to it but whatever it was keeps moving further and further away. He starts running towards it when a hidden root trips him and he hits his head. Laying there Steven passes out from the pain.
…
Steven sits up from his bed and feels hazy. Everything around him is different, but he recognizes all of it. After a few minutes he hears “Is everything alright, honey?” Freaked out Steven looks beside him to see a strange lady in his bed with him. White as a ghost Steven jumps out and is frozen in a panic. “Willis did you have a bad dream?” The woman says. Did she just call me Willis? “You haven’t been sleeping well lately have you. I’ll get up and make you your favorite breakfast. She walks out of the room and Steven turns and sees his reflection in the mirror. That’s not me. Who is that? Willis? Steven looks around and doesn’t recognize his surroundings anymore and walks into the living room to see the strange woman making breakfast.
He walks over to the table and sits down. The woman who Steven now realizes is his wife brings over rice and jellied veal. Staring at it, Steven is able to eat the rice but lost his appetite looking at the jellied veal. “Is there something wrong, honey?” the woman looks over at him. “It’s nothing. Just still waking up please forgive me.” Steven says as he walks back to the bedroom
Searching the room he opens a drawer and there it is, the candle with only a little over an inch left. Steven jumps back at the sight of so little left. He grabs it and runs out the door. Running down the street he doesn’t recognize his surroundings at all. The streets have the same name but the desolate town didn’t resemble his in the slightest. At that moment the old town map comes to his mind. Quickly almost on instinct he runs over to Willow drive to check it out. Desperately he tries to remember the address. 1234? No 3224? No… that’s right! 2234! He takes off running north on Willow drive. Suddenly he sees this old shack with the address he was looking for.

He knocks at the door of the building to no answer and decides to open the door. It’s unlocked. Looking around the shack was dark. No windows were in it, nothing was in it in fact. Knowing he didn’t have a flashlight or anything to get more light he takes out the candle and the entire room lights up in writing. All over the wall words in different languages could be seen by the candlelight. Finally, he comes across some in English. RUN. Get to the gazebo. Shine the light at the ceiling.
Steven wakes up on the ground in the woods. Covered in dirt it started raining when he was out. It was dark already and he forgot why he was out there. Looking up there it was, the gazebo. Rushing over he takes out the candle and stands on the bench inside. Holding it up as high as he can he can make out faint writing but it isn’t clear enough. I need to find something to stand on. Desperately looking around he sees a log in the distance. He runs over and picks it up but when he turns around the Gazebo is gone. He carried the log for a while looking but cannot find where the gazebo has gone to. It being dark he decides to return home.
Arriving home Steven sees the police in his driveway. “There he is oh thank goodness he is okay” his mom yells from the porch, “Steven where have you been you said you were walking home after church and it is 9 at night…. Oh no your head is bleeding? Are you okay?” His mom told the police to disregard the missing persons. “We might have to come back soon though. Gus Mulch says Steven pushed him in a fire and we will be following up.”
Steven and his mom went inside. “Did you push Gus into a fire” His mom asked but Steven was speechless who does my mom think I am. Steven just walked away to his room without answering. While there he pulls the candle out to measure it. 5 in a half inches?! Where did it go? When did I get lucky? Steven thinks back to the past couple days and narrows it down to Gus falling into the fire. This candle shows that I got lucky. I wonder what might have happened if it didn’t stop him when it did. What if I covered my heart, what would have happened to me? Steven get’s ready for school the next day and heads to bed.

Delve
Summary – Level 1: Delve is an isekai litrpg that follows an average guy who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. He wasn’t summoned to defeat the demon lord or to save the world or anything like that, at least as far as he can tell. The only creature there to greet him was a regular old squirrel. Soon enough, he meets other people, only to discover that he can’t speak the language, and that not everybody immediately trusts random pajama-wearing strangers they met in the middle of the wilderness. Things generally go downhill from there, at least until the blue boxes start appearing. Delve is a story about finding your way in a new, strange, and dangerous world. It’s about avoiding death, figuring out what the heck is going on, and trying to make some friends along the way. It’s not about getting home, so much as finding a new one. Did I mention that there will be math? Summary – Level 2: Okay, but what are you in for, really? Well, this story is supposed to be realistic, or at least, as realistic as a fantasy litrpg can be. The main character doesn’t instantly become an all-powerful god and murder-hobo his way across the universe. Delve is, at its heart, a progression fantasy, but that progression is meant to feel earned. The numbers in this story actually mean something. Everything is calculated, and if you find a rounding error, I expect you to tell me about it. That said, if math isn’t your cup of tea, there is plenty more that the story has to offer. Characters are meant to feel real, and progression isn’t only about personal power; it’s also about allies, connections, and above all, knowledge. Figuring out how the system works is a significant theme. ... What, you want more details? Okay, fine, but this is going to get a bit spoiler-y. Are you sure? Yes! Really sure? I mean, this summary is practically half as long as the first chap– Now! Okay, okay! The main character becomes a magic user, but he takes a route that is not very popular in adventurer culture, namely that of a support. There is a full magic system with various spells, skills, and abilities, but our MC decides that aura magic is the way to go, and that the only stat worth investing in is mana regeneration. Most people at the Adventurer’s Guild think that this makes him a bit of a dumbass, but he’s playing the long game. We’ll see how that works out for him, won’t we? Because of his build, the MC levels up fast, at least compared to normal people. There are no cheats, though, and he is limited in other ways. There are some clear and pretty obvious downsides to his build. That’s what makes it fun, no? Morals? Our MC has them. Again, we’ll see how that works out for him. Realism, remember? Would you be okay with killing someone and looting their body? I sure hope not. POV? The focus is on the main character, but there will be occasional varying perspectives from people around him, or involved in the events related to the main plot. It isn’t going to jump all over the place. Tech is standard medieval stasis. No smartphones, but the MC does have a technical background. Computers and their programming might be involved. There might even be a bit of uplifting down the road, who knows? Anyway, it isn’t the focus. He isn’t going to invent the gun in chapter 1 and change the face of warfare. Romance is not a major focus. Friendships are more the name of the game, though there will be some characters in romantic relationships. There is exploration, though not as much of the geographical nature as you might expect. It is more about exploration of the system and the culture. The pace is slow and detailed, sometimes verging on slice-of-life. The action is meant to be realistic and grounded in the numbers, and it is intended to have meaning beyond simply punching things until they stop moving. The general tone of the story is grey, and some parts can get quite dark. People die. Sometimes, people with names, but not anywhere near GoT level. There is plenty of light, too, though, to balance the darkness. The world is dangerous, but overcoming that danger is why we’re all here, isn’t it? Anyway, if you’ve made it this far through the summary, you clearly like words. I hope you enjoy the story! Cover by Miha Brumec Summary Updated: 2020-06-14

Contact First
2039 - Earth A narrow beam energy signal appeared aimed squarely at earth from the TRAPPIST system. The communication consisted of a layered set of repeating data over several thousand wavelengths. Over the next few months scientists discovered that the lower wavelengths carried an encoded numerical language which could then be used to interpret the more complicated messages carried on the higher wavelengths. After half a year of painstaking work the signal was fully decoded. It described a small satellite launched along a precise trajectory towards the fourth planet of our solar system. Included was a package of advanced research that humanity would need to have ready in order to receive the satellite and decelerate it safely. The alien data provided the kick that humanity needed to turn from petty squabbling and unite to explore the final frontier. Major government and corporate leaders worked together to create the framework for the United Federation of Sol. UFS spaceports went from scaffolding to daily launches in every major city around the globe. Ships floated like dandelion seeds, spreading on solar wind to grow into colonies. 2397 - Mars orbit, Egeria Station The command center was a hive of activity as checks were conducted and systems initialized. Scientists flitted by like mayflies as communicators beeped and holoscreens spat out green tinted readouts. Nervous energy was thick in the air as everyone anticipated the culmination of over three hundred years of work. Massive fusion reactors under the planet's surface thrummed with barely restrained power as energy fed into a gleaming metallic maze criss crossing the planet. Metal fingers reached up, overshadowing the mighty olympus mons and trying to grab the stars. All over the solar system, people quickly turned to look as gigantic energy lances shot from the dusty fourth planet. Two years later. The same people that clapped loudly at the successful activation of project Hermes now wait with baited breath. A silver capsule trailing bright photonic sails is captured by a net of grav beams and guided with care bordering on reverence into the station. Holoscreens across the headquarters project an image of the sleek craft settling in the bay. Data connections are established and the holoscreens blink to white. Slowly an image forms on the screen. Across the headquarters people stare in wonder as a wholly alien face stares back. "Contact established. Welcome to the universe."
