"Katara! We don't want to be late."
"Coming!" Katara quickly finished the makeup of her painted lady costume and headed downstairs. Sokka sat in the small living room of their apartment, stroking a fake mustache and beard.
"Who are you supposed to be?"
"This," the mustache fell off, "is me as an adult." Katara shook her head and laughed.
"I don't think that's what you would look like as an adult." she checked the address of the party, "We should probably walk," she said, "You know gran gran won't let us use Dad's car, and Jet's house isn't too far.
"Ugh. Fine." It was about six o'clock when Katara and Sokka arrived at Jet's house, and the sun was just beginning to set.
"Flameo, hotman!" Said a boy with curly brown hair.
"Uh, who are you supposed to be?" asked Sokka. Katara elbowed him.
"That's Aang, dummy! He's just not wearing his hat!" He's cute with hair, she thought to herself. Other than the absence of the hat, Aang was just wearing normal clothes, but Katara supposed it counted as a costume.
"I haven't ever been to a party before," he said, "unless study groups count."
"Yeah," said Katara, "I don't really have many friends."
"Well, I definitely have been to a party," Sokka said proudly. Katara rolled her eyes.
"When? Last I checked you spend your nights drooling over Yue's yearbook picture."
"Well..."
"Hey, you guys have been standing here for 10 minutes. You should come inside." Jet stood in the doorway. Sokka breathed a sigh of relief.
"Wait a minute, why aren't you wearing a costume?" he asked, "You're hosting the party."

"I'm devilishly handsome enough as it is."
"You're infuriating," said Katara dryly.
"You know it," Jet winked at her.

Zuko parked his gray Audi about a block away from the address of the party and secured his mother's blue spirit mask in place. He walked at a brisk pace towards the house. Why are you so tense, he thought, It's just a party and no one knows who you are. But as he got closer and closer to the house, the anxiety was replaced with excitement. He was going to be a normal teenager, if only for one night.
~~~
"Well this is... fun," Katara said as she and Aang sat on a loveseat at the corner of the room. Aang laughed nervously as Jet handed him a plastic cup filled with something that was definitely not apple juice, and went to talk to Smellerbee and Longshot. Sokka had gone off to find Yue, but it seemed that she hadn't arrived yet.
"Do you think Jet has been acting weird today?" Katara asked, absentmindedly bending the water in her cup, obviously not planning on drinking it, "He's been more... flirtatious then usual. I hope he understands that I barely know him and that I'm not interested."
"Yeah," said Aang, setting the plastic cup down, "I hope he does."
"Hey guys!" Suki came up to them with Sokka in tow.
"I couldn't find Yue," he said by way of explanation.
"You guys look bored. Do you want to play truth or dare?"
"Sure," said Katara standing up from the loveseat, "Thanks for the offer. We were bored." Suki sipped at her drink.
"I can be the life of the party if I want to." They headed to the center of the living room, where there were a few couches and a coffee table in the middle. A couple of Suki's friends were there, as well as Jet, Smellerbee and Longshot.
"Mind if I join?" For a moment, Aang didn't recognize Toph. Her hair was down. She wore all black, and oddly enough, she wore a mask that looked like a... melon? He only knew it was her from the sound of her voice.
"What are you supposed to be?" he asked. Toph sighed.
"Isn't it obvious, Twinkle Toes, I'm melon lord!"
"Who?"
"You know," Katara chimed in, "From the t.v show, Melanie the Melon Lord. You never watched that when you were a kid?" she paused, "or watched it now?"
"I technically can't see what's happening on the T.V., but this what I think melon lord would look like," Toph added.
"I never really watched T.V," Aang admitted, feeling a little left out, then smiled and changed the subject, "Let's play the game."
"Alright, I'll start," Suki said, "Jet, truth or dare?"
"Dare," Jet said, barely skipping a beat. Suki grinned and went into the kitchen. She came back with an empty jar of pickles.
"Drink this entire jar of pickle juice," she handed it to him, "In thirty seconds." Jet scowled, but managed to wolf it down fast enough. The next three rounds continued in this way. Everyone chose a dare, and everyone succeeded. When it was her turn Toph yawned.
"Let's make this interesting," she said, "Katara, truth or-"
"Dare." Toph smirked.
"Kiss the person to your left." Aang turned as red as a tomato. Jet was to the right of Katara, and he frowned.
"Katara, you don't have to-" Aang started.
"No Aang it's fine. It's just a kiss," Katara's cheeks were tickled pink. She leaned forward. Their lips only touched for a moment, but they were both blushing madly by the end of it. Aang and Katara looked at each other, and the moment was replaced with flustered laughter.
"Alright, let's move along," Jet said impatiently, "Katara, it's your turn."
~~~
Sokka sat beside Suki on one of the couches in the living room, glancing around anxiously for Yue. It's fine, he thought, maybe something came up. I don't even know why she would come in the first place.
"Sokka? Are you alright?" Suki touched his shoulder. She was dressed up in a witch costume, a flowing purple dress with makeup to match. Sokka had known her since middle school, and they had always been rivals, but this year, they had started to become friends, good friends.
"Thanks, Suki."
"For What?"
"I don't know," Sokka leaned back and stared up at the ceiling, "I guess you've just helped me a lot this year." They smiled at each other.
"Sokka, truth or dare?" it was his sister.
"Truth." he said. Katara and Aang shared a knowing glance.
"Do you have a crush on Suki?" Sokka froze.
"Well I- I don't know I-" he stuttered, then glanced at Suki. It was impossible to read the expression on her face. He couldn't stop himself as the words came tumbling out of his mouth, "I think so."
Katara and Aang hi- fived. Toph's eyes widened. Suki stood up.
"I- I'm gonna get some air," she walked towards the back patio, gesturing for Sokka to join her. There was an awkward silence.
"Longshot, truth or dare," Aang said, and just like that the game returned to normal. Sokka stood up shakily. 'Sorry,' Katara mouthed from across the room. He shook his head, took off his fake mustache and beard, and followed Suki outside.

Lost in a Dream
Published Monday, Wednesday, and Friday! If dreaming is a drug, then I'm a junkie. For most people, sleeping is an obstacle. Something to get out of the way, so they can get back to their life. For others, it's an escape to nothing, a blissful break from the wears of life. It's the opposite for me. I live so that I can dream; I work so that I can go home and close my eyes, awakening in the real world. My real world. After all, what is reality if not the place where dreams don't come true? Can you fight a dragon on your way home from work, or conquer a foreign land to save an oppressed people from their malevolent overlords after vacuuming the living room? Can you visit a land where mountains look like freshly baked phyllo dough, or live in a castle bigger than my apartment complex? Tigers instead of taxes. Monsters instead of men with too much power. Reality is just the word we came up with to accept a mundane life. A birthing place for grander ideas we wish could materialize. I choose to live in a world where they do.
