《Phantom Path》Chapter 12: Strategy and Sweet Sweet Upgrades

Three days forward beyond the event of the robbery and Chimaera, and all soldiers, along with the boys, were called into the clinic to be admitted since those days had passed, and busy are the doctors who have put upon themselves the task of checking if any of them had picked up any 'curses' from fighting the monster. And while he waits, in the backyard of the clinic Nahshon idles, walking in circles in which he stops, pausing at the sight of two puppies fighting over a piece of cloth, coming to an understanding of the world he now lives in.
"Hm, you know, I was sure it would be like a medieval world coming here. But the more I travel, the more it reminds me of the pins on Norway I saw on the internet, you know? It's strange, isn't it? Yeah. Are all the other countries like this? They're barely any roads here, well narrow, compared to my country, at least. No big skyscrapers about, many still using horses over wheels, yeah. But even then, there's tech here. Yup, thank god the internet exists here. And speaking of that...I should get myself a phone and a laptop soon. I get it's a fantasy world and all, but geez, I need for myself some music and rest for god sake...I wonder if they have k-pop as well...yes, I know I might be asking for too much already...and I just hope anime exist here as well. Yap," Nahshon says, sitting at one the tables where he begins slouching as he's bored with his life already.
"Who do you keep talking to all by yourself??" Ezek comes, grunting as he holds his back.
"Hmm, just wondering about some stuff," Nahshon tells him. "What's up with you?"
"I think one of those nurses got a little too excited feeling me up," He says, sitting around the table as well.
"Ooh, alright then"
"Not in that way, you moron," He slaps Nahshon across the head.
"Of course, of course"
"Tch...If I had the right stuff, I would've blown that ugly fucker to hell," Ezek hisses, frustrated he didn't kill it himself.
"I'm sure you'll get another chance"
"It was like fighting a fucking cockroach," He adds. "You can easily kill one if it stays on the ground, but when it flies, it just becomes more fucking annoying!"
"Hmm, true," Nahshon chuckles, and comes a duo from the group of soldiers that had faced the monster as well, joining the boys on the outside, the one whose leg that was severely burnt, walking with crutches as he's aided by a friend, his face lighting up as he sees the boys, giving to Nahshon a salute.
"Thank you," The man takes Nahshon's hand to shake it. "You saved our lives. Just...thank you"
"A-Ah, it's okay, I just hope you're doing alright," Nahshon smiles, the man nodding to him as they now leaving the boys back to their little chat, with Nahshon continuing in looking at the man's burnt leg, tilting his head with curiosity. "Why don't he just drink a red potion? That would have healed his leg, wouldn't it?"
"Tsk! Don't tell me I have to explain what a fucking potion does??" Ezek laughs, looking at Nahshon whose seriously clueless in asking his question.
"You know what...yeah, I remember now," Nahshon nods, his mouth folded as he doesn't want to bother with asking Ezek of all persons.
"Ugh...potions aren't magical to the point of it being absolute, dude. It's science, really. When you take one, it stimulates your red blood cells to go faster, the time-varying on the type of red potion you have, hence you healing quickly. After that, you can't take any more for the next five hours, 'cause it'll strain your body...people have even died from it the same way. And because of the small-time limits, it won't have enough time in healing everything...you get it now?"

"Woah," Nahshon sounds, amazed by Ezek's teaching. "Varies on the size? Or are there actually different types?"
"Types. The size is just to hold more, the more juice the better. That guy with the burnt leg, he'll have to find himself a priestess to heal it. Not a red potion"
"I see," Nahshon nods.
"Didn't you learn this stuff in school??" Ezek questions.
"Let's just say for now...I was homeschooled"
"Oh yeah...that. You being from another world and shit...hmmm," Ezek shakes his head, Nahshon sighing as he feels like giving in trying to tell him it's the truth, and comes another into the backyard, Dahlia who twists her neck in looking for the both of them, called over with a wave as she finds them, greeting them with a hug as she was worried.
"Where have you been this whole time??" Nahshon questions her.
"I was inside the hotel the whole time," She replies. "I couldn't see you guys because the clinic wouldn't allow it as yet. Something about you guys possibly being...cursed?"
"Yeah...but the only thing that's cursed is that I collapsed in the middle of all of it," Nahshon laughs, scratching his head as he's reminded of how he almost died.
"Yeah...and that is why you should take what I give to you," Dahlia smiles, giving to Nahshon the untouched vila that was resting in his bag.
"...You went into my bag??"
"J-Just make sure you take it whenever you have your meal, alright? It's not like you have anything 'secretive' hiding in there anyway"
"Hm. You sure," Ezek smirks. "You didn't check to see if he had secret compartments hiding his porn-mags in there?"
"No, I don't, so fuck off," Nahshon chuckles, joined by the both of them, and appearing is a nurse who also begins twisting her neck in looking around.
"Um, Mr.Thompson!" The nurse calls. "Yes, Ms.Alonso would like to see you now"
"Oh, alright. I'll see you guys around," He gets up, onto following the nurse to his checkup.
And by a vending machine for a drink he firstly stops, his way of calming down before getting into something that may make him nervous, gently rubbed on the back by the nurse as she tells him to have no worries as they walk, as the doctor is a kind and generous person. To the door they reach, there the nurse knocks for a response, waiting for the doctor to invite them.
"Come in!" They hear as Isabella invites them in, and into the room on his own, Nahshon enters in being left by the nurse, seeing Isabella sitting by her desk with her mouth still covered with a mask.
"Mr.Thompson, have a seat," She invites, gesturing for him beside her.
And so he does, onto a stool where's then drawn closer to her by her foot, awkwardly staring at her with Isabella returning the attention. She lifts his shirt, placing to his chest the air conditioner-cooled stethoscope underneath, beginning her feeling for his heartbeat, and as she examines him, fighting is the boy who tries his best in erasing the thoughts that cloud his mind, arguing against the seduction of her scent that captivates his senses in her being so close, his eyes lost on her soft-looking skin in wanting to know who she is. But so he's turned around, onto his back pressed the same, Isabella curious of who she's examining as well.
"Fascinating," She says, sensing on her tool the low beat of the boy's heart. "Your heart is unlike an average person, truly interesting"

"...Meaning?" Nahshon asks, sensing the flow of the tool across his upper back, feeling as she has now stopped, as she then goes to pick out a syringe from within her drawer, grasping onto his arm with rubbing alcohol over the spot she aims for after, slowly sticking the syringe within, taking from him his blood that fills the tool.
"You'll get your results in the next two hours," She informs him, placing his blood within a glass tube that she puts to rest on a holder, onto taking out a glass cup and a bottle of wine from her fridge, showing to him the glass she holds. "Wine?"
"No...I'm good," He declines. "I had sparkling water not too long ago"
"Hmm...suit yourself," She smiles, pouring for herself a drink that she puts down for later. "I heard of your aid in fighting off the robbery"
"Hmm," Nahshon nods.
"You're not much of a talkative person, I assume"
"I guess...I just don't know what to say"
"I see. Well, I'm curious about you, Mr.Thompson...can I call you by your first name?" She invites, her hand under her chin as she leans in towards him.
"...Sure. And about what exactly? Your curiosity"
"You interest me. There is something about your heart that is...very unique"
"...Hmm?" Nahshon ponders, a little intimidated by her eyes that gaze upon him, keenly as her red nail rhythms against the desk.
"Hmm...I'm just wondering if you have the same curse as I do?" She states, confusing the boy who slowly nods at her encrypted speech. "...Anyhow, on behalf of the village and its people, I'd like to reward you. Here, this should be a good amount for payment, am I correct?"
"Thank you," Nahshon says, slowly accepting from her the envelope of money she rewards him with, reminded of another thing he would like to have back as well. "...Can I have my sword back as well??"
To his request, by the storage behind him she points, revealing to him where she has stashed his belongings. And for his sword, Nahshon checks the storage as informed, finding it within their as told, checking to see if she had messed with it in any way.
"How about you finish the quest?" She invites to him, the boy turned around in already knowing what she means. "If you do so, then I'll be willing to pay you more"
"I think we've done enough," He sighs. "I think the soldiers can take care of the rest"
"Hmm..." She sounds, starting a peal of silent laughter that troubles the boy. "Are you perhaps frightened by the beast?
And before he could answer, evolving is a large group of murmuring that noises outside the room, the two of them looking to see a crowd of people that seem to be in a hurry past the window of the office. And so they curiously join the crowd in wanting to see for themselves as well, down to the lower level of where all begin to rally around, into seeing as all manner of things occur; nurses whose bodies jump in excitement, their tongues only speaking of autographs, and young kids who awe of the sight of what they look up to, calling a name that echoes within the office.
"Dr.Baardson, what is the meaning of this?" Isabella asks, intrigued by why the whole clinic has become this way.
"Dr.Alonso, you won't believe who came to visit our clinic," He excites, a big smile on his face like the kids before him. "It's Commander Vernon of the Strongcastle knights, I can't believe it!"
"Oh! There he is!" Nahshon hears Ezek's voice, seeing as his partner begins raising himself over the crowd to see. "Nahshon! Over here!"
And by his voice Nahshon follows, squeezing through the crowd in being polite as he passes as well, finally getting to the middle of the commotion. And there he sees Ezek who smirks, standing beside the man that they call the commander, letting out a small sound as he sees the description of the man who has visited the clinic, reminded of the day he went to the court to bail out Ezek, still dressed in his black coat and his eyepatch over his eye.
"Ah, I remember you, the lad that asked for directions," He says, smiling to the boy he has come to see once more. "Nice to meet you again, kid"
"Likewise," Nahshon says, accepting for himself a handshake from the commander.
"What a coincidence. We've met in another odd situation, huh," He laughs, joined by Nahshon who chuckles as well. "I heard that you boys helped against the robbery, and that you even saved one of my soldiers from the beast"
"No need to thank us," Ezek brags. "It just sucks that we won't be the ones to kill that ugly thing, since you have your eyes on it now"
"Really?" Vernon laughs. "Then how about you come with us? Since you both were some of the first to battle it, I think it'd be fair for you to get a share of the reward after as well"
"Seriously?? We can come?" Ezek excites, laughing as he's glad to hear those words, and thinking between going or leaving it up to them is Nahshon who looks to the ground in his pondering, nudged on his shoulder by Ezek who gestures to him with a smile. "Come on, dude, don't let me do this without you"
"Hmm," Nahshon sounds, into really thinking about his choices, both of them seeming critical in whichever he chooses, ultimately coming to one decision in seeing Ezek's thirst for blood with eyes that are eager for his answer. "You'd go without me either way, but...alright...I'll come with"
"Hm. Then it's settled, you lads will come with me to the base," Vernon confirms, then onto his radio where his soldiers answer. "Start the engines, we're moving out"
And in awesome character the crowd cheers, startling Nahshon whose fingers begin trembling in his nervous excitement, putting a smirk of a greedy wolf on Ezek's face as well. But before exiting through the door, back into the crowd Nahshon looks into, to Dahlia and her granddad who sends them off with a smile of reassurance, then to Isabella who simply waves to him farewell. And so he heads out, along with Ezek and the others who he will join on the mission of slaying the beast, where they pack themselves into one of the cavalry's trucks, greeted by the soldiers as they now begin their trip. After many hit songs of the old days, performed by the soldiers, into the base, to the lively place the boys set their feet on, seeing as soldiers work all around; doing workouts, playing games and watching movies, guarding the facility by their posts, and preparing their weapons, as the boys follow Vernon into one of the bunkers, where the old man lay before them a map of the capital province of Verencia, Dragonford, with areas circled in different colours.
"Now, let me brief you on our strategy going forward. This is where we came from, Borg," He points at the yellow circle. "Before that incident, many other locations nearby reported sightings of a chimaera around their areas, then three days ago, you both and some soldiers came into contact with it. After that, more sightings were reported near there, which means..."
"It means that it's still around, nesting somewhere close by, right?" Ezek figures., pointing at the red circle, a detail of a large cave. "And whenever it's hungry, it comes out looking for food...ugly bastard"
"Correct, we suspect it came from Blackshores, but what I'm trying to figure out, is how it got past the southern province and all the way into the capital, without anybody seeing it as well"
"Are you saying...this might have been created inside the capital??" Nahshon questions.
"We can't see it being impossible. And although dark magic is illegal, people just can't help but be curious about these things, it seems. Anyways, this is our strategy; with our huntsman unit, we'll first cripple it from flying off, then drive it out of its resting nest, onto the path of every checkpoint we've set up, trapping it a stronghold in my province. I'm sure you boys have heard of this story somewhere. There's a hold where no monster has ever come out breathing...Fort Beastbane," Vernon tells them, pointing at the green marker, the boys nodding at each other, Nahshon now believing that he has just become apart of a very cool story of a video game. "With that, comes the end to our briefing meeting. As for your first rewards, how about you go have a look inside the armoury? Take what you want, we leave bright and early tomorrow, remember"
With that, Vernon ends his briefing, stacking back his map onto its shelf. And by his last words, to the armoury Nahshon and Ezek pay a visit to, entering to an arsenal of some of the finest weapons the base has, with Ezek's first objective in being full-on touchy as he exams all the guns, all their shapes and sizes being equal in his awe as he views them.
"Yeah, this is what I'm talking about," Ezek smirks. "You find anything you like yet?"
"I mean...I got my sword back," Nahshon replies, stopping at some gadgets that he sees laid onto a table.
"You should learn to be diverse, it could save a lot of trouble, you see," Ezek suggests to him. "If another loli takes your sword again, you might not be so lucky the next time"
Nahshon cringes at his words, his memories triggering in his embarrassment, picking up for himself a couple of stuff that interests him, onto getting his eyes caught by a black stone bracelet with an odd symbol marked upon it. And so he puts it on, and slowly he shakes his wrist in seeing if it fits, catching as his sword suddenly vanishes before his eyes, transformed into a stream of light that is sucked into the bracelet. Surprised by the sudden happening, he begins flashing his hands around, desperately wanting his sword back as he begins to worry.
"Stop flailing around, dude," Ezek teaches, kneeling as he has found himself something. "Your hand, shape it like you're holding a sword. now imaging it. It's like the supermarket scanning items, but you're doing it with magic"
"Oh," Nahshon calms down, and so he does as instructed, his eyes closed as he reminds himself of the shape, colour and length that he has walked with since coming to this world, and in his hand he feels its presence once again, opening his eyes in swinging its weight once more, training himself in getting used to the art of the bracelet now upon his wrist. "Hm...alright then"
"Heh," Ezek smiles, hearing as Nahshon is gladdened by his discovery.
"What? You found something you like?" Nahshon asks, and so he sees as Ezek get back onto his feet, seeing in his eyes a flame that he senses, dangerous and wild.
"If I found something? Hm," He smirks, as in his hands, held is a weapon that he holds dearly like his newborn child, its four slots fully loaded as he grins at the thought of blowing the beast to smithereens, VH-4 scorcher its name, the missile launcher now apart of Ezek's collection."Fuck yes, I did...I really did"

“One in a billion.” Jack kept repeating the mantra in his head. “One in a billion.” That was the number the Omni-Corps liked to cite whenever someone stepped onto one trans-mat pad and then simply… never stepped off the other. “Safer than a car,” he repeated as he slogged through the snow, his mining overalls doing at least a passable job of keeping out the cold as he brushed aside a tree branch. “Safer than a plane. Or a starship. Safest form of transport in the Star League.” He slammed his fist into a nearby tree, exo-empowered strength shattering it into little more than scattered bark and kindling. “Yeah, well I never heard of a car ride stranding some prick in another dimension!” He roared, his voice echoing through the seemingly endless forest around him. Then he kept marching. He’d seen the fire off in the distance. And given all the snow around, he sincerely doubted it was natural. Which left the unnatural. Which meant people. He hoped. Because even if the trans-mat had screwed up, he doubted it had dumped him too far off the central finite curve. The fact that the air was breathable and that he could recognize the trees around him as oak told him that much. And if the dimension he was in had trees native to Earth, chances are it would have animals too. Of which humans would hopefully be no exception. “Because I’ll be damned if I spend the rest of my days talking to goddamn squirrels.” No, if there were humans on this mudball, he was going to find them. One way or another.
